Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How much to budget for food per month in Nigeria

Per-person monthly food figures built from NBS price data, adjusted for cooking at home, buying lunch or eating out, with tips to keep the basket down.

The short answer

Using NBS average prices from early 2026, a basic monthly basket of staples for one adult who cooks at home (rice, beans, garri, tomatoes, onions and palm oil) costs about ₦32,700; adding eggs, protein, vegetables and seasoning brings our labelled example to about ₦61,000. Buying weekday lunch can add ₦40,000 or more, so the pattern of eating matters more than the city.

Start from published prices, not guesses

The National Bureau of Statistics publishes a monthly Selected Food Prices Watch with national average prices. The figures below come from news reports of that series. Prices vary by state and market, so treat them as a reference point and replace them with what you pay.

ItemNBS average priceMonth
Local rice, 50kg bag₦112,000March 2026
Brown beans, 1kg₦1,338.93April 2026
White garri, 1kg₦808.96April 2026
Tomatoes, 1kg₦1,177.92April 2026
Onion bulb, 1kg₦1,164.39April 2026
Palm oil, 1 litre₦2,396.32April 2026

The rice figure is from The Sun's report of the March 2026 release; the others are from the News Agency of Nigeria's report of April 2026. For eggs, the March 2026 report gave a range rather than a national average: a crate of 30 cost most in Taraba at ₦6,999 and least in Niger at ₦5,610.04.

A one-person monthly basket

Staples (built from the NBS figures above)

ItemQuantity a monthCost

Tomatoes4kg₦4,712
Onions1kg₦1,164
Palm oil2 litres₦4,793
Staples total₦32,701

Add-ons (labelled example figures)

The NBS figures above do not cover everything a person eats. These additions are example amounts, not NBS prices; replace them with your own.

  • Eggs, one crate: about ₦6,300 (within the NBS state range above).
  • Fish, chicken or meat: ₦15,000.
  • Vegetables, pepper, seasoning, bread and fruit: ₦7,000.

That brings the example to about ₦61,000 a month for one adult who cooks most meals at home.

By eating pattern

Pattern (labelled example)How it is builtMonthly
Cooks almost everything at homeFull basket aboveAbout ₦61,000
Buys weekday lunchTwo-thirds of the basket (about ₦41,000) plus 22 lunches at ₦2,000About ₦85,000
Eats out most mealsSmall basket plus two bought meals a dayCount plates × price × days

The lunch price is an example; check what a plate costs near your work. The pattern changes the total far more than small swings in market prices.

A household

A family of four sharing meals does not usually need four times a single person's basket: staples are bought in bulk and cooking is shared, while children eat less than adults. Our family-of-four example budget uses ₦170,000 a month for food.

Where you live changes the figure

State averages can differ by a factor of two or more. The Sun's report of the NBS March 2026 release gave white garri at ₦1,075.45 a kilo in Abia, the highest, against ₦513.78 in Plateau, the lowest; brown beans ranged from ₦1,937.20 in Oyo to ₦745 in Taraba. A household in a state where staples are cheap can run the same basket for far less than one where they are dear. That is why a national figure is only a starting point.

Within a city, open markets, neighbourhood shops and supermarkets also price differently. Track your top five items for a month in two places before deciding where to buy. Savings on rice, beans and oil, which you buy in volume, matter more than savings on items you buy once a month.

Prices keep moving

Food prices rise faster than most other costs. The NBS put food inflation at 19.59% year on year in September 2026, compared with headline inflation of 14.63%, as reported by Voice of Nigeria. Some items have fallen over the year: the April 2026 report showed brown beans and garri well below their April 2025 levels, while tomatoes rose 6.60% in a single month. Review your food line every two or three months rather than once a year.

Ways to keep the basket down

  • Buy rice, garri and beans in larger quantities and split with a neighbour; the per-kilo price on a bag is often lower than by the cup or paint bucket.
  • Buy tomatoes and pepper in season and blend and freeze them if you have steady power.
  • Plan the week's meals before going to market so you buy for a list, not by sight.
  • Carry lunch on at least three working days.
  • Compare two or three sellers for your top five items each month.
  • Keep a running list of what is already in the house so you do not buy a second bottle of oil or bag of garri by mistake.
  • Cut waste: cook amounts you will finish, and turn leftovers into the next day's lunch.

If you are thinking of buying a bag of rice on credit to save money, see buying foodstuff in bulk on credit and planning a monthly grocery budget.

Where Pryme fits

Grocery and retail stores and eateries are among the sectors in Spaces, Pryme's network of merchants in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. A naira Savings Box can hold the food envelope for the month so it is not spent on other things.

Questions people ask

How much is food per month in Nigeria for one person?

Using NBS prices from early 2026, staples for one adult cooking at home cost about ₦32,700 a month; with protein, eggs and vegetables our example is about ₦61,000.

The NBS March 2026 report put a 50kg bag of local rice at ₦112,000 on average. Prices vary by state; check your market.

How much should a family of four spend on food in Nigeria?

It depends on income and eating pattern. Our labelled family example uses ₦170,000 a month.

Where can I check food prices in Nigeria?

The NBS publishes the Selected Food Prices Watch each month, with national and state averages.
