Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

MoneyGram transfer to Nigeria on hold: documents asked for

Why MoneyGram holds a US-to-Nigeria transfer, the documents typically asked for, how to answer, and your rights if it stays stuck.

The short answer

MoneyGram holds a transfer when it needs to check who you are, where the money came from, who the receiver is or why you are sending it; US anti-money-laundering rules require these checks. Expect requests for photo ID, proof of address, proof of income or source of funds, and the purpose and your relationship to the receiver. Answer only through MoneyGram's official app, site or phone line, with documents that match your profile.

Why a MoneyGram transfer goes on hold

A hold is not an accusation. MoneyGram is a money services business, and FinCEN's quick reference guide for such businesses sets out duties that apply whatever the destination: for money transfers of $3,000 or more, the provider must verify the sender's identity and keep a record for five years, whatever the payment method, and it must report suspicious activity. Each provider then runs its own risk checks on top. MoneyGram's US page for Nigeria does not describe its hold process or list review times, so what follows is how holds work across the industry and what the rules require.

The usual triggers for a hold on a Nigeria transfer are:

  • A first transfer, or a first large one, on a new profile.
  • An amount well above your past pattern, or several transfers in a short period.
  • A name, date of birth or address that does not match your ID or card.
  • A receiver whose name does not match the bank account, or who receives from many senders.
  • Payment with a card or bank account in someone else's name.
  • Splitting one payment into smaller ones. FinCEN treats deliberately breaking up transactions to avoid reporting as structuring, which is itself an offence.

Documents you may be asked for

MoneyGram tells you what it needs in its message, and that message is the only list that counts. The table shows what money transfer providers commonly ask for and what makes each document acceptable. Ria and Remitly publish similar lists on their own help pages, which gives a fair picture of industry practice.

RequestWhat usually satisfies itTips
IdentityUS driver's licence, state ID, passport or Green CardIn date, all four corners visible, name as on your profile
Proof of addressRecent utility bill or bank statementAddress must match the one on your MoneyGram profile
Source of fundsRecent bank statement, pay stubs, a loan letter or sale documentShow the money arriving, not only your balance
PurposeSchool fees invoice, hospital bill, rent agreement, or a short written explanationMatch what you selected as the reason when you sent
RelationshipA short statement: mother, brother, landlord, supplierBe consistent with earlier transfers
Payment methodStatement or card image showing your nameCover the middle card digits if the request allows

How to clear the hold

  1. Open the MoneyGram app or website and check the transfer status and any message; also check your email, including spam.
  2. Call MoneyGram only on the number in the app or on its official site, with your reference number ready.
  3. Send exactly what was asked, clear and complete. A blurry or cropped image often leads to a second request.
  4. Keep your explanation short and factual: who, why, and where the money came from.
  5. Tell the receiver to expect a delay, and not to share any code or OTP with anyone who calls about the transfer.

If MoneyGram decides not to complete the transfer, ask how and when the refund will reach you. A transfer that cannot be released is normally refunded to the original payment method, but timing depends on how you paid; ask MoneyGram to confirm it in writing.

Your rights while the money is held

Consumer transfers abroad of more than $15 are covered by the federal remittance rule. The CFPB says your receipt must show the date the money will be available, and that you have 180 days from that date to report an error such as money not arriving on time. The provider generally has 90 days to investigate and must refund or resend for covered errors. Under 12 CFR 1005.33, the remedy for a covered error is a refund or a resend at no extra cost, and where the money was not available by the disclosed date the provider also refunds the fees. Write down the availability date on your receipt the day you send.

If MoneyGram does not resolve it, the CFPB suggests filing a complaint at consumerfinance.gov/complaint with your transaction number, a short description and copies of your documents; it says it works to get a company response generally within 15 days. Our guide to filing a CFPB complaint walks through it.

Avoiding the next hold

  • Complete your profile fully before your first large transfer.
  • Pay from an account or card in your own name.
  • Send one transfer for one purpose, not several smaller ones on the same day.
  • Keep a folder of a recent statement and pay stub so you can answer within minutes.

For more on why banks and apps ask these questions, see why your bank asks about Nigeria transfers.

Where Pryme fits

Families who send often sometimes prefer to fund one account and pay from it at home. A Pryme account holds dollars and naira; Send pays Nigerian accounts, and nothing moves until you approve. Pryme also runs identity checks, through regulated partners outside Nigeria.

Questions people ask

How long does a MoneyGram hold take to clear?

MoneyGram does not publish a review time on its US Nigeria page. Most holds move once the requested documents are received and accepted; respond quickly and check the app for status.

Why is MoneyGram asking for proof of income?

To show where the money came from. US anti-money-laundering rules require providers to know their customers and report suspicious activity, and source of funds is a standard check.

Can I cancel a MoneyGram transfer that is on hold?

Usually you can ask, as long as it has not been paid out. Within 30 minutes of paying, federal rules give a free cancellation unless the money was deposited.

Will a hold affect my receiver in Nigeria?

The receiver simply waits. They should not pay anyone or share codes to 'release' the money; MoneyGram deals only with the sender on a sender-side hold.
