Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

MoneyGram from the US to Nigeria: fees and pickup options

What MoneyGram says about fees from the US to Nigeria, which Nigerian banks it pays into, and how naira cash pickup works at a GTBank branch.

The short answer

MoneyGram's US page for Nigeria gives no standard fee: it advertises $0 fees on a new customer's first online transfer and says fees and rates otherwise vary by amount, payment type, delivery method and location. The receiver can be paid into accounts at ten named Nigerian banks, and GTBank's own page says MoneyGram money can also be collected as naira cash at any GTBank branch, with amounts above $200 going to an account.

MoneyGram is one of the older names in US to Nigeria transfers and is on the Central Bank of Nigeria's list of licensed money transfer operators. Its US corridor page is short on numbers, so this guide sets out what the page does say, what the Nigerian payout banks say, and how to compare a MoneyGram quote.

How MoneyGram prices a US to Nigeria transfer

As at October 2026, MoneyGram's US page for Nigeria says you can send online, in the MoneyGram app, or in person at an agent, and pay by debit card, bank account, credit card or cash. It publishes no fee table. Instead it says:

  • "$0 fees for new customers", with a footnote limiting this to the first online transfer.
  • Promotional exchange rates may apply on some corridors, subject to eligibility limits.
  • Fees and rates vary by amount, payment type, delivery method and pickup location.
  • MoneyGram also earns money from currency exchange, so the rate carries a margin.

After the first transfer, the quote in the app or online is the only reliable fee. Read it as two parts: the fee line and the naira the receiver gets. Our guide to what happens after a first-transfer promotion explains why the second transfer often costs more.

How the payment method changes the cost

Pay withExtra cost outside MoneyGram's quote
Bank account or debit cardNone from tax; exempt from the 1% federal remittance tax
Credit cardYour card issuer may treat it as a cash advance, with a fee and interest
Cash at an agentThe 1% federal excise tax on cash-funded remittances applies from 2026

The 1% tax covers transfers funded with cash, money orders or cashier's checks (Pillsbury, April 2026); MoneyGram, as the provider, collects it.

Where the money can be paid in Nigeria

MoneyGram's US page names these banks for deposits: Unity Bank, UBA, Union Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Sterling, Polaris, FCMB, Fidelity, First Bank and GTBank. The page does not say whether cash pickup or mobile wallet payout is offered for Nigeria from the US. That gap is filled by the paying bank.

Cash pickup at GTBank

GTBank's MoneyGram page says:

  • Naira cash can be collected at any GTBank branch, including by non-customers with regulatory ID such as BVN or an international passport.
  • Money can be credited to any naira account number (NUBAN) in Nigeria.
  • Amounts above $200 must be paid into an account.
  • Send in the receiver's account first name and surname.
  • The beneficiary is not charged.

This matches the CBN rule, reinforced from 1 May 2026, that IMTO transfers are paid in naira only (Techeconomy, March 2026). No MoneyGram payout in Nigeria is in dollars. See MoneyGram's naira payout for the receiver's side.

Comparing a MoneyGram quote fairly

Because MoneyGram's price moves with the amount and the payment method, compare like with like. Price the same dollar amount, at the same time, with the same payment method and the same payout type across any providers you are considering, and write down two numbers for each: the total you pay in dollars and the naira the receiver gets. Divide the naira by the dollars paid to get an effective rate you can compare directly. Our guide to FX margins on transfers to Nigeria shows the method.

MoneyGram's US page does not state sending limits or the ID it asks for; those appear as you set up your profile and may rise with verification. MoneyGram is on the CBN's published list of licensed IMTOs, and in the US every money transmitter needs state licensing; our page on checking a provider's state licence explains how to look one up.

Worked example (illustrative)

You send $150 for a relative's medicine and he wants cash. Under $200, GTBank will pay naira cash at a branch with his ID. If you send $450 for rent, it must go into his account. For both, the quote shows the naira he will receive; price the same amount with a bank account and with cash, and the cash quote will include 1% tax ($1.50 on $150, $4.50 on $450).

What to check first

  1. Open the MoneyGram app or site and enter the exact amount.
  2. Choose bank deposit or cash and confirm the naira amount.
  3. Check whether the $0 fee applies (first online transfer only).
  4. Use the receiver's name exactly as on their bank account or ID.
  5. Keep the reference number from your receipt to track the transfer.

For tracking, see tracking a MoneyGram transfer.

Where Pryme fits

For family who bank with Pryme, you can keep dollars in your own Pryme account, opened from the US, and convert with Swap when you choose. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See how Pryme works.
