Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using a foreign marriage certificate for a passport name change

Married abroad and taking your spouse's surname? The documents NIS and missions ask for, why your NIN must change first and when legalisation comes in.

The short answer

Missions accept a foreign marriage certificate for a change of surname on a Nigerian passport, usually with your spouse's consent letter and a copy of their passport data page. Ottawa adds that your NIN must already show the new name, and that a court affidavit and newspaper publication are needed only for marriages in Nigeria; London says name changes are accepted only through marriage or divorce, not by deed poll.

What the rules allow

A Nigerian passport name change after marriage is a change of data, not a new passport, and it follows the NIS rules for change of marital status. The NIS passports page lists a marriage certificate, a court affidavit and a newspaper publication for a change of marital status, with a non-refundable administrative charge. Missions abroad apply these rules to their own applicants and add local details, so the exact list depends on where you apply.

Affidavit and newspaper publicationNot listed for marriageOnly for marriages in Nigeria
What can changeName change only by marriage or divorce; deed poll not acceptedSurname only
Mission fee£20 standard feeC$150 for change of data by marriage or divorce, including admin

Both pages were read in October 2026. London's wording refers to a husband's consent and data page, reflecting the usual case of a wife taking her husband's surname; Ottawa's refers to the spouse.

Fix the NIN first

The order matters. Passport details are now checked against NIN data: the NIS renewal page says current passport details are compared with your NIN, and London requires the NIN to match the passport in the correct order. Ottawa states plainly that the NIN must already show the new name before you apply. If you change the passport first, the mismatch can stop the application.

NIN modifications from abroad go through NIMC's licensed diaspora partners; see NIN modification from abroad. Our Nigeria guide on correcting NIN details explains the evidence NIMC asks for.

Does the foreign certificate need legalising?

Neither the London nor the Ottawa passport page says a foreign marriage certificate must be apostilled or legalised for a passport name change; London asks for the certificate and Ottawa for a photocopy. Other Nigerian bodies may ask for more. If you plan to use the certificate with NIMC, a bank or a court as well, ask each one what form it accepts before paying for legalisation. Our guides on whether Nigeria accepts apostilles and marriage recognition cover the wider picture.

A worked example

Example: Funmi Adeyemi marries David Okon at a register office in Toronto. She wants her passport to read Funmi Okon. Her order of work is: update her NIN to Okon through a NIMC diaspora partner, using the marriage certificate; then apply on the NIS portal for a change of data, uploading the certificate; pay the NIS fee and the Ottawa mission's C$150 change-of-data fee; bring the marriage certificate photocopy, David's signed consent letter and a copy of David's passport data page, her old passport and data-page copy, and the return envelope. Because the marriage took place in Canada, Ottawa's page does not require a newspaper publication or court affidavit from her.

Other records to update

  • BVN. CBN rules allow a surname change after marriage with a marriage certificate, affidavit or newspaper advert. See correcting BVN details while abroad.
  • Bank accounts. Banks expect the name to be the same on all accounts linked to your BVN.
  • Foreign records. Your residence permit and foreign accounts should match the passport you travel on; check the host country's own rules.

Steps

  1. Get certified copies of the marriage certificate, and a translation if needed.
  2. Update the NIN to the new surname and wait for it to show.
  3. Apply on the NIS portal for a change of data and book the appointment.
  4. Prepare the spouse's consent letter and data-page copy.
  5. Attend with the old passport, NIN and the mission's fee.
  6. Update your BVN and bank records.

If you later divorce

The same route works in reverse. London accepts a return to a maiden name on divorce with the divorce certificate, proof of your maiden name and other ID in that name, and Ottawa's C$150 change-of-data fee covers divorce as well as marriage. As with marriage, update the NIN first so the two records agree, and keep a certified copy of the divorce certificate with your marriage certificate, in case an office asks to see the full chain of names.

Where Pryme fits

Once the passport and NIN agree, update your Pryme profile to match so that transfers in your new name are not held; see how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Can I change my surname on my Nigerian passport with a UK marriage certificate?

Yes. The High Commission in London accepts name changes by marriage with the marriage certificate, the husband's consent letter and data page. It does not accept deed poll changes.

Do I need a newspaper publication to change my name after marrying abroad?

Ottawa says a newspaper publication and court affidavit are needed only for marriages in Nigeria. The NIS passports page lists them for change of marital status generally, so check your mission.

Should I change my NIN before my passport?

Yes. Ottawa requires the NIN to already show the new name, and London requires the NIN to match the passport.

How much is a passport name change after marriage in Canada?

The High Commission in Ottawa lists C$150 for change of data by marriage or divorce, including admin, on top of the NIS fee.
