Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Processing and management fees: how they raise a loan's cost

Fees taken upfront mean you receive less but repay the full amount. See how much they raise a loan's real rate, short and long, in Naira.

The short answer

Processing, management and insurance fees deducted upfront reduce the cash you receive while you still repay interest on the full amount, so the real rate is higher than the quoted one. On a 30-day loan, 4% of fees can almost double the effective cost (5% becomes 9.375% for the month in our example); on a 12-month loan the same fees add far less per month.

Many Nigerian loan offers show an interest rate and then, lower down, a management fee, a processing fee, and a credit life insurance charge, often "taken upfront". Each fee looks small. What matters is how long you keep the loan, because a one-off fee is spread across the whole tenor. On a short loan there is very little time to spread it over.

The common upfront fees

Processing or management fee
A one-off charge for arranging the loan, usually a percentage of the amount.
Credit life insurance
Cover that repays the loan if the borrower dies or, under some policies, is disabled. Often a one-off percentage.
Commitment or facility fee
Charged on some bank facilities and overdrafts for making the limit available.

Published bank terms as at October 2026 show how common these are. Access Bank's Salary Advance FAQs list a 1% management fee and 1% credit life insurance, "taken upfront". GTBank's QuickCredit page lists credit insurance of 1% flat as a one-off charge. Check the lender's current page or your offer letter, as fees change.

Worked example 1: a 30-day loan

Example figures only. You borrow ₦100,000 for 30 days at 5% interest for the period. The lender deducts a 3% processing fee and 1% insurance upfront.

LineAmount
Loan amount₦100,000
Fees deducted (4%)₦4,000
Cash you receive₦96,000
Interest (5% of ₦100,000)₦5,000
Repaid on day 30₦105,000
Total cost (fees plus interest)₦9,000

You paid ₦9,000 for the use of ₦96,000 for 30 days, which is ₦9,000 ÷ ₦96,000 = 9.375% for the month, against a quoted 5%. Counted simply over a year, that is about 114% a year (9.375 × 365 ÷ 30), against about 61% for the interest alone (5 × 365 ÷ 30).

Worked example 2: the same fees on a 12-month loan

Example figures only. You borrow ₦100,000 over 12 months at 2.5% a month on a reducing balance, with the same 4% deducted upfront. The equal monthly instalment is ₦9,748.71, so you repay ₦116,984.52 in total for ₦96,000 received.

  • Without fees the monthly rate is 2.5%, about 34.5% a year compounded.
  • With the 4% fee, the rate that equates ₦96,000 received with twelve payments of ₦9,748.71 is about 3.18% a month, about 45.6% a year compounded.
  • The fee adds roughly 0.68 percentage points a month here, against 4.375 points a month on the 30-day loan.

The fee is the same ₦4,000 in both cases. Over 12 months it is spread thinly; over 30 days it lands all at once. This is why short loans with upfront fees are so expensive, and why lenders that compete on short loans tend to advertise the rate rather than the fee.

Fees and early repayment

Upfront fees interact badly with repaying early. Interest can often be reduced if you clear a loan ahead of time, but a fee already deducted is rarely returned. Example: on the 12-month loan above, if you repay everything after three months, the ₦4,000 fee was spread over only three months of borrowing, not twelve. The fee then works out at about 1.4% a month of the cash you received (₦4,000 ÷ ₦96,000 ÷ 3), on top of the interest. If you expect to repay early, a loan with a slightly higher rate and no upfront fee can cost less overall. GTBank, for instance, states that QuickCredit pre-liquidation is allowed without penalty; that refers to a penalty, not to a refund of fees already charged.

Fees added to the balance instead

Some lenders add the fee to the amount you owe rather than deducting it. You receive the full ₦100,000 but repay interest on ₦104,000. The effect is similar to borrowing more to cover the fee, below, and the fee earns interest for the lender throughout the loan.

Borrowing more to cover the fee

If you need ₦100,000 in hand and the lender deducts 4%, you must borrow ₦100,000 ÷ 0.96 = about ₦104,167. Interest is then charged on ₦104,167, so the fee itself attracts interest. Ask whether the fee can be paid separately rather than deducted, and compare the total.

What to check first

  1. List every fee on the offer, and whether each is deducted, added to the balance or paid separately.
  2. Work out the cash you will actually receive.
  3. Add all fees and all interest to get the total cost in Naira.
  4. Divide the total cost by the cash received, then adjust for the tenor to compare offers. Our guides to APR versus flat fees and working out a loan app's APR go further.
  5. For digital lenders, the FCCPC's 2025 regulations require interest rates and associated fees to be fully disclosed before the transaction is completed. Check the lender is on the FCCPC register.

Where Pryme fits

For Loans on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, the agreement shows the amount, cost and repayment date in full before you accept, so you can run the same test before drawing anything. See where every charge is shown.

Questions people ask

Is a management fee on a loan refundable if I repay early?

Usually not. One-off fees are generally earned when the loan is paid out. Check your offer letter; if it is silent, ask the lender in writing.

Why did I receive less than the loan amount I applied for?

Upfront fees such as processing, management or insurance were probably deducted before payout. You still repay interest on the full loan amount.

How do I calculate the real interest rate with fees?

Add all fees and interest to get the total cost, divide by the cash you received, and adjust for the tenor. A short loan with upfront fees will show a much higher real rate.

Is credit life insurance compulsory on a loan in Nigeria?

Many bank loans include it as a condition. Ask the lender what it covers and whether you can use existing cover instead.
