Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sending laptops to staff in Nigeria: customs and duty

Shipping laptops from Canada to a team in Nigeria? How Nigerian Customs values them, the levies and VAT on top, and the papers to send.

The short answer

Laptops sent from Canada to staff in Nigeria are imports: Nigeria Customs charges duty on the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) converted at the CBN rate on the day of assessment, then adds a 7% surcharge on the duty, a 0.5% ECOWAS levy, a 1% CISS charge on the FOB value and 7.5% VAT, according to DHL Nigeria's June 2026 guide. The duty rate depends on the HS code, so confirm it with your courier or a clearing agent before you ship, and send a clear commercial invoice with serial numbers.

A gift to a colleague is still an import

When a Canadian company posts three laptops to its developers in Lagos, the parcel arrives in Nigeria as goods with a value, not as a favour between friends. Nigeria Customs Service assesses it, and someone has to pay the duty and taxes before the courier releases it. If your team member is the named recipient, that person will usually be asked to pay unless you have arranged delivered-duty-paid shipping with the courier.

There used to be a commonly quoted personal-effects allowance: in October 2019 a Customs spokesperson told The Guardian that personal effects "shall not exceed the value of N50,000", with anything above treated as dutiable merchandise. We could not find a current official figure, and a new laptop will be far above that amount anyway, so plan on paying duty.

How the charge is built

DHL Nigeria's guide to import duty (25 June 2026) sets out the order of the calculation. Every line rests on the CIF value, which is the price of the goods plus freight and insurance to Nigeria, converted to naira at the CBN rate on the day Customs assesses the entry.

ChargeBaseRate (DHL guide, Jun 2026)
Import dutyCIF valueSet by the HS code under the tariff
SurchargeImport duty7% of the duty
ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme levy (ETLS)CIF value0.5%
Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS)FOB value1%
VATCIF plus duty, surcharge and levies7.5%

The rate for laptops is the one figure we could not confirm on an official page. Portable computers sit under HS heading 8471, but the current Nigerian rate for that line was not on any page we could open in October 2026. Ask your courier for a duty estimate on the exact product, or ask a licensed clearing agent to check the tariff, before you promise anyone a delivery date.

Worked example (illustrative rate)

Example only. You ship three laptops with an FOB value of ₦4,500,000 and freight and insurance of ₦300,000, so CIF is ₦4,800,000. Suppose the duty rate on the HS code is 5% (an assumption for the arithmetic, not the official rate).

  • Import duty at 5% of CIF: ₦240,000
  • Surcharge at 7% of duty: ₦16,800
  • ETLS at 0.5% of CIF: ₦24,000
  • CISS at 1% of FOB: ₦45,000
  • VAT at 7.5% of ₦5,125,800 (CIF plus the four lines above): ₦384,435
  • Total payable to clear: ₦710,235, before any courier handling or brokerage fee

If the true duty rate is higher, every line from duty downwards rises with it except ETLS and CISS. Run the same steps with the confirmed rate and the CBN rate on the day.

Papers to send from Canada

Canada Post says letter-post documents with no monetary value need no customs paperwork, but goods do: a CN22 declaration for items under CAN$500 and form 43-074-172 for higher values. Couriers use their own commercial invoice. Whichever you use, Nigerian Customs will read it, so make it complete.

  1. A commercial or pro-forma invoice from your company showing make, model, quantity, serial numbers and the price you paid, in one currency.
  2. A note of purpose: company equipment issued to a named employee or contractor, remaining company property.
  3. The recipient's full name, phone number and address as they appear on their ID, so the courier can contact them for clearance.
  4. Who pays duty: tick the courier's delivered-duty-paid option if you want your company billed, rather than your staff member.
  5. Copies of the purchase receipts, kept in your books with the shipment record.

Do not under-declare. A low value on the invoice is the most common reason for a parcel being held for valuation, and Customs can reassess it using the methods in its own valuation rules. The delay costs more than the duty saved.

Other checks before you ship

  • SIM-enabled laptops: Legit.ng reported on 14 October 2026 that the NCC's device verification system, in force from 7 October 2026, covers SIM-enabled laptops as well as phones; newly imported devices may need to pass it before connecting to Nigerian mobile networks. The NCC device checker is at ncc.gov.ng/DeviceChecker. A Wi-Fi-only laptop is a separate question we could not confirm.
  • Lithium batteries: couriers have their own rules for batteries inside devices; check the courier's dangerous goods page.
  • Ownership: record each laptop on your asset register against the staff member, with the serial number, so you can recover it if the contract ends.

Buying in Nigeria instead

For one or two machines, buying from a reputable Nigerian reseller often avoids clearance delays, warranty problems and courier holds. The reseller has already paid import charges. You pay in naira, get a local invoice and receipt, and the staff member collects the laptop the same week. Compare the landed cost of shipping with the local price before deciding.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy locally, a Pryme Business Account holds CAD, USD and naira side by side, and Swap converts only when you choose, showing the rate and the fee before you approve. You can pay a Lagos reseller in naira and generate a verifiable receipt through Pryme's VerifyDoc.ai partnership for your asset file. For teams on contract, see using an employer of record in Nigeria, and before sending older machines, read the rules on exporting used electronics.

Questions people ask

How much is customs duty on a laptop sent to Nigeria from Canada?

Duty is a percentage of the CIF value set by the laptop's HS code, plus a 7% surcharge on the duty, 0.5% ETLS, 1% CISS on FOB and 7.5% VAT, per DHL Nigeria's June 2026 guide. We could not confirm the current laptop duty rate on an official page, so get a courier estimate for the exact model.

Who pays the duty, me in Canada or my staff in Lagos?

By default the courier asks the recipient. If you want your company to pay, choose the courier's delivered-duty-paid option when you book.

Can I write a low value to reduce duty?

No. Declare what you paid. An undervalued invoice can lead to the parcel being held and revalued by Nigeria Customs, which delays your staff and can cost more.

Do laptops need NCC approval in Nigeria?

According to a 14 October 2026 Legit.ng report, SIM-enabled laptops fall under the NCC device verification system that began on 7 October 2026. Check the device with the NCC device checker. We could not confirm the position for Wi-Fi-only laptops.
