Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Exporting used electronics from Canada to Nigeria: e-waste rules

Why the line between working used equipment and waste decides everything, what Nigeria restricts, and the checks to make before a container leaves Canada.

The short answer

Used electronics can be exported from Canada to Nigeria as goods for reuse, but broken or untested equipment can be treated as hazardous waste, which needs environmental permits and may not be accepted at all. Nigeria also restricts some used appliances: its import list, as summarised by the US Trade Administration in 2025, restricts used compressors and used fridges and freezers. Test, document and declare every item, and confirm the Nigerian side with the buyer's clearing agent before shipping.

Laptops, phones, televisions, printers and kitchen appliances bought cheaply in Canada sell for much more in Lagos, Aba and Onitsha. That price gap has made used electronics a common side business for Nigerians in Canada, and it has also made West Africa a destination for electronic waste that should never have been shipped. Customs and environmental authorities on both sides now look hard at these containers. The single question that decides how your shipment is treated is whether the goods are working products for reuse, or waste.

Goods or waste: the distinction that matters

Environmental rules on e-waste are aimed at material shipped for disposal or recycling, especially items containing batteries, leaded glass, refrigerant gases or mercury. A working laptop sold to a buyer who will use it is a product. A pallet of dead monitors bought by the tonne is likely to be waste, whatever the invoice says. In between sits the grey zone that causes most problems: untested, mixed-condition loads.

In Canada, exports of hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material are regulated by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and some exports need a permit and the importing country's consent. We were not able to open ECCC's current guidance while preparing this article, so we do not state its thresholds or forms here. Before you ship anything that is broken, untested or being sent for parts, contact ECCC and ask in writing whether your load counts as hazardous waste or hazardous recyclable material.

How to keep a load on the right side of the line

  • Test every item and record make, model, serial number and result on a spreadsheet that travels with the shipment.
  • Pack each item so it arrives working: boxed or protected, not loose in a heap.
  • Leave out anything broken, swollen batteries, cracked screens and cathode-ray tube sets.
  • Invoice item by item at a realistic resale price, not by weight.
  • Keep the buyer's written order showing the goods are for resale and use.

The Canadian export declaration

Whatever the environmental position, the customs rules apply. CBSA's exporters' guide says an export declaration is required for commercial goods worth CAN$2,000 or more going to a country other than the US, and for restricted or controlled goods of any value. Not reporting can lead to penalties, seizure and, in serious cases, criminal charges. A container of used electronics for sale in Nigeria is commercial; file the declaration as explained in filing a CERS export declaration for goods to Nigeria.

The Nigerian side

The US International Trade Administration's summary of Nigeria's prohibited and restricted imports (changed 10 April 2025) lists used compressors and used fridges and freezers among restricted items. If your load includes refrigerators, freezers or air-conditioning units, or compressors on their own, expect them to be refused or seized unless your buyer has confirmed the current position with the Nigeria Customs Service. The ITA also notes that the lists are longer than its summary and that importers should confirm with NCS.

Nigeria's environmental regulator, NESREA, also has rules on electrical and electronic imports. We could not open NESREA's current rules, so ask your buyer to confirm with NESREA or a clearing agent who handles electronics regularly what registration or documents the importer needs.

SONCAP and used goods

The SON SONCAP FAQ lists "used products other than automobiles" among items exempt from SONCAP, and says refurbished products need an Import Permit. If you clean, repair or re-box items and sell them as refurbished, the buyer may need that permit. Ask SON or an accredited SONCAP firm before the goods ship; see SONCAP certificates for Canadian exporters.

A worked check before you load

Example only: a 20-foot container with 180 laptops (all tested working), 40 flat-screen TVs (36 working, 4 not powering on), 12 microwave ovens and 6 used fridges.

ItemDecisionWhy
180 tested laptopsShip, itemisedWorking goods for reuse with test records
36 working TVsShip, itemisedWorking goods for reuse
4 dead TVsDo not shipLikely to be treated as waste
12 microwaves (tested)Ship if buyer confirmsCheck Nigerian rules with the clearing agent
6 used fridgesDo not ship unless confirmedRestricted in Nigeria per ITA summary

Getting paid without being exposed

Electronics loads are high value, and a seized container is a total loss for whoever owns the goods at that point. Agree in writing who bears the risk at each stage. Many sellers ask for most of the price before loading, or keep the original bill of lading until the balance is paid. See selling to Nigerian buyers from Canada for the options.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme business account gives your business NGN and USD account details, so a Nigerian buyer can pay locally and you choose when to convert. A verifiable statement or receipt from Pryme receipts gives you and the buyer a record of each payment that either side can check is unaltered.

Questions people ask

Can I ship used laptops and phones from Canada to Nigeria?

Generally yes as working goods for resale, declared to CBSA if commercial and worth CAN$2,000 or more. Broken or untested items risk being treated as waste.

Are used fridges allowed into Nigeria?

The US Trade Administration's 2025 summary lists used fridges, freezers and compressors as restricted. Confirm with a licensed clearing agent before shipping.

Who regulates e-waste exports in Canada?

Environment and Climate Change Canada regulates hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material exports. Ask ECCC in writing whether your load needs a permit.

Do used electronics need SONCAP?

SON's FAQ exempts used products other than automobiles, but says refurbished products need an Import Permit.
