Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Lagos IRS and property income for owners in the UK

Own property in Lagos but live in the UK? What LIRS does and does not handle: Land Use Charge, rent tax, Payer ID and tax clearance.

The short answer

If you live in the UK and are non-resident in Nigeria, tax on your Lagos rent is generally a matter for the Nigeria Revenue Service, not LIRS, which taxes individuals resident in Lagos. LIRS still matters to you as an owner: the Lagos Land Use Charge is payable by the owner whether the property is let or not, and LIRS issues tax clearance certificates to Lagos taxpayers. If you are still resident in Lagos, LIRS taxes your income in full.

Owners in the UK often hear 'pay LIRS' from agents and tenants without knowing which tax that means. The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service collects several different things, and only some of them follow you when you move. This guide sorts them out. It is information, not tax advice.

Who taxes the rent: LIRS or the NRS?

PwC's summary of Nigerian individual tax administration (reviewed 29 May 2026) says state revenue services collect tax on the income of individuals resident in their state, while the federal service, now the Nigeria Revenue Service, handles non-residents along with FCT residents and some others. So:

Your positionWho taxes your Lagos rentOn what
Still Nigerian resident and living in Lagos (for example, family remains there)LIRSYour worldwide income, including UK pay
Non-resident in NigeriaNRSNigerian-source income, such as the rent
UnsureCheck the residence tests firstSee our residence guide

The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 makes you resident if any one of several tests applies, including a home available for your use or immediate family ties, as our guide on when you stop being Nigerian resident explains. Whichever office it is, company tenants still deduct 10% withholding tax on rent; see Nigerian tax on rent for UK landlords.

Land Use Charge: the Lagos bill that stays with the owner

The Lagos Land Use Charge is a property charge, not an income tax, so your residence does not change it. Ownkey's June 2026 guide says it is payable by the owner whether the property is let or owner-occupied, and can be paid through the LIRS portal, a Remita reference, banks presenting the demand notice, or at LIRS Revenue House in Alausa. Insist on an official LIRS receipt.

The Mypryme guide to Land Use Charge covers discounts and penalties, and our piece on paying it from abroad covers the payment steps.

Your LIRS profile and Payer ID

LIRS runs its eTax platform at etax.lirs.net. TechCabal's April 2026 walkthrough says individual Payer IDs start with 'N-' and corporate ones with 'C-', and that a Tax ID can be checked at the Joint Tax Board's TIN portal using your NIN. An owner with a Lagos property often needs a profile to see Land Use Charge bills and payment history, even after moving. The Mypryme guide to the LIRS Payer ID covers registration.

Tax clearance certificates

LIRS issues electronic tax clearance certificates through eTax. KPMG's 2023 alert lists the conditions: an updated profile with photo and address, annual returns filed for the last three years, and assessments paid in full. The certificate carries a unique number for banks and agencies to validate. Section 72 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 says agencies and banks ask for a certificate covering the three years before the current one for things such as a certificate of occupancy or building plan approval. Our guide to getting a tax clearance certificate from the UK covers the route for non-residents.

If you are still Lagos resident

Some owners move to the UK while a spouse and children stay in Lagos for a school year or longer. Under the new residence tests, immediate family ties alone can keep you resident, and then LIRS is your tax office for your whole income, including UK salary. You would file a Lagos return and claim relief for UK tax already paid on the same income under the treaty.

Example. Funmi works in Croydon from January 2026 while her husband and children remain in Surulere until December. On the tests as PwC summarises them, she may remain Nigerian resident for 2026 through the family tie. If so, her LIRS return covers her UK pay and her Lagos rent, and she would also be UK resident under the UK's own test. The treaty tie-breaker then decides which country has first claim for treaty purposes. Cases like this deserve advice in both countries.

Shortlets and other Lagos charges

LIRS also collects a 5% consumption tax on hotels, restaurants and event centres under a 2009 Lagos law. Whether it applies to shortlet apartments is not stated in the reports we read; confirm with LIRS before you price a shortlet. Our shortlet guide covers the money side.

What to check first

  1. Work out whether you are resident or non-resident in Nigeria this year.
  2. Find your Land Use Charge demand notice and check it is in your name.
  3. Confirm your LIRS Payer ID or create one with your NIN or BVN.
  4. Collect withholding tax receipts from any company tenant.
  5. Report the same rent to HMRC on your UK return.

Where Pryme fits

From a Pryme account opened in the UK you can hold naira and send to pay a Lagos bill or an agent, with the rate and fee shown before you approve when converting from pounds.

Questions people ask

Do I pay LIRS tax on my Lagos rent if I live in the UK?

If you are non-resident in Nigeria, tax on Nigerian-source income such as rent is generally handled by the NRS, which deals with non-residents. If you are still Lagos resident, LIRS taxes you.

Do I still pay Land Use Charge if my Lagos house is let?

Yes. The owner pays Land Use Charge whether the property is let or owner-occupied.

How do I get an LIRS Payer ID from abroad?

Register on LIRS eTax at etax.lirs.net using your NIN or BVN. Individual Payer IDs start with 'N-'.

Can I get a Lagos tax clearance certificate while living in the UK?

LIRS issues e-TCCs to taxpayers who have filed three years of returns and paid their assessments. If your tax is handled by the NRS as a non-resident, ask the NRS instead.
