Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Lagos developer quoting prices in pounds: what to check

A Lagos developer quotes your flat in pounds: the naira-pricing rules, what the contract must say about currency and exchange rate, and who carries the FX risk.

The short answer

A pound price is a marketing convenience, not a protection. TheCable's summary of the CBN's 2026 FX manual says Nigerian entities should price and settle in naira, with sector exemptions, and refusing naira as payment is an offence under the CBN Act, so check that the contract lets you pay in naira, names the exchange rate and date used to convert, says which currency any refund is paid in, and sends money to the developer's own Nigerian account.

Why developers quote in pounds

For a buyer in Birmingham or London, a price of £85,000 is easier to compare with UK property than ₦170,000,000, and it shields the developer from naira weakness during a two- or three-year build. Neither of those reasons makes the price safer for you. The questions are whether the pound price is lawful and enforceable, and who carries the currency risk.

What Nigerian law and the CBN say

Templars' May 2025 note on pricing in foreign currency sets out the position:

  • Section 20(5) of the CBN Act makes it an offence to refuse naira as a means of payment, with a fine of ₦50,000 or six months' imprisonment; a proviso lets the CBN prescribe when other currencies may be used.
  • A CBN circular on currency substitution and dollarisation (BSD/DIR/GEN/LAB/08/013) sought to bar pricing in foreign currency.
  • Templars' view is that no statute criminalises pricing or contracting in foreign currency as long as naira is not refused.
  • It cites a 2025 Federal High Court case (FHC/L/353C/2025) in which a company pleaded guilty under section 20(1).

The CBN's fourth-edition FX manual took effect on 1 June 2026. TheCable's summary (June 2026) says Nigerian entities should price and settle in naira, subject to sector exemptions. Whether a particular developer falls within an exemption is a question for your lawyer, not the sales team.

What the contract must say

PointWhat to look forWhy
Currency of the priceIs the price in naira with a pound reference, or in pounds only?A naira price fits the CBN position; a pounds-only price raises questions
Paying in nairaAn express right to pay the naira equivalentAvoids a dispute about refusing naira
Exchange rateWhich rate (named source), on which date, for each instalmentWithout this, the developer picks the rate
Refund currencyWhether a refund is paid in pounds or naira, and at what rateA naira refund after a fall in the naira can lose you money
PayeeThe developer's own Nigerian account, in its registered namePayments to UK personal or third-party accounts are harder to trace
Price changesWhether the price may rise during the build, and any capSome pound prices are fixed; some are not

Example: who carries the currency risk

Example only. A flat is priced at £80,000, paid in four equal instalments of £20,000 over two years. Suppose the contract says each instalment may be paid in naira at the rate on the day it is due.

  • If the rate is ₦2,000, ₦2,200, ₦2,350 and ₦2,500 on the four due dates, the instalments cost ₦40,000,000, ₦44,000,000, ₦47,000,000 and ₦50,000,000: ₦181,000,000 in total. If you earn in pounds, your cost stays £80,000; the developer has passed the currency risk to naira payers.
  • If instead the price were fixed in naira at ₦160,000,000, the same move would make the later instalments cheaper for a pound earner: ₦40,000,000 per instalment would cost £20,000 at first and £16,000 at the end.
  • If the developer cancels and refunds in naira at a weaker rate, a pound-based buyer loses value.

The Bank of England publishes daily sterling rates; whatever source the contract names, write it down and check it on each due date.

If you have already signed a pounds-only contract

Do not panic, and do not stop paying without advice. Ask your lawyer to read the currency clause and write to the developer asking for confirmation, in writing, that you may pay the naira equivalent, which rate source applies, and what currency any refund will be paid in. Keep that confirmation with the contract. If the developer refuses to put anything in writing, treat it as a warning about how a later dispute might go, and consider whether to pause further instalments only once your lawyer has checked the contract's payment terms.

Checks before you pay

  1. Ask your own Lagos lawyer whether a pound price is lawful for this developer, given the 2026 FX manual.
  2. Ask for the price in naira as well as pounds, in writing.
  3. Make sure the contract names the exchange-rate source and date for each payment and any refund.
  4. Pay the developer's Nigerian company account, not a UK account in a director's name.
  5. Do the usual title and developer checks: LASRERA registration and contract clauses for off-plan flats.

The wider question of how much of your wealth to hold in naira is in FX risk on naira investments.

Where Pryme fits

If the contract lets you pay in naira, you choose when to convert. A Pryme account holds pounds and naira, and Swap converts only when you approve, showing the rate and fee first, so each instalment's naira cost is recorded.

Questions people ask

Can a Lagos developer legally price a flat in pounds?

The CBN's 2026 FX manual says Nigerian entities should price and settle in naira, with sector exemptions. Ask your lawyer about the developer's position.

Is it illegal to refuse naira in Nigeria?

Yes. Section 20(5) of the CBN Act makes refusing naira as payment an offence, with a fine of ₦50,000 or six months.

What exchange rate should an off-plan contract use?

A named source and date for each instalment and any refund, so neither side picks the rate after the fact.

Should I pay a Nigerian developer into a UK account?

Safer to pay the developer's own Nigerian company account in its registered name, against signed documents.
