Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Checking a Lagos developer with LASRERA from the UK

Buying off-plan in Lagos from the UK? What the LASRERA Law 2022 requires of developers, how to check them remotely, and what it cannot tell you.

The short answer

Under the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Law 2022, developers and others dealing in real estate in Lagos must register with LASRERA and hold a permit, and developers must list their projects. LASRERA's website offers a search to check whether an agent is registered and a complaints channel. Registration is a minimum check: you still need title searches on the land and a lawyer to review the contract.

Off-plan flats in Lekki, Ajah and Ikoyi are marketed hard to Nigerians in the UK, often at events in London and Manchester. A common reassurance in the pitch is "we are registered with LASRERA". This guide explains what that registration means, how to check it from the UK, and the checks it does not replace.

What LASRERA is

LASRERA was first set up under the Lagos State Estate Agency Regulatory Law (Cap L28, 2015), which made licensing mandatory for real estate practitioners. The LASRERA Law signed on 7 February 2022 widened it. A Mondaq analysis of the 2022 Law (Famsville Solicitors, May 2022) says:

  • Section 26 requires persons dealing in real estate, including developers, facility managers and property managers, to register.
  • Section 27 requires developers to list their projects.
  • A registration permit is valid for one year and renewable (section 29(3)).
  • Registered dealers must keep a separate client account and hold three years' tax clearance.
  • The register of dealers is open to public inspection (section 25), and complaints and petitions go to the Authority (section 6).
  • Section 48 sets fines for failing to register of not less than ₦250,000 for an individual and ₦1,000,000 for a company, with daily penalties.

The article notes that the Law defines off-plan arrangements but does not describe specific off-plan rules or escrow requirements.

Checking from the UK

  1. Get the developer's full registered company name and RC number from its documents, not its brand name.
  2. Use LASRERA's website. Its "Search for Agents" tool lets you check whether an agent is registered; the site also has a "Lodge a Complaint" option.
  3. If the online search does not cover the developer or the project, ask LASRERA in writing whether the company is registered under section 26 and the project listed under section 27, and ask the developer for a copy of its current permit, checking the date (permits run for a year).
  4. Check the agent selling to you separately. Under the earlier rules summarised by Mondaq in 2020, agents could not collect money from more than one prospective buyer for the same property and had to remit to the principal within 14 days unless told otherwise in writing.

What registration does not tell you

LASRERA registration says the developer is permitted to operate. It does not confirm that the land is theirs, that the building has approval, or that your flat will be delivered. For that:

  • Search the title of the land at the Lagos Lands Registry and confirm whether the developer owns it or has a joint venture with the landowner.
  • Ask for the building plan approval for the project.
  • Check how your title will be created: a sublease or assignment needs Governor's consent under section 22 of the Land Use Act.
  • Have a Lagos lawyer review the contract for delivery dates, specifications, penalties for delay and refunds.

The Nigeria library has more on fake agents and LASRERA.

Questions to send the developer

A developer that is properly set up should answer these in writing without difficulty. Send them by email so the replies are on record.

  1. What is your registered company name and RC number, and may I have a copy of your current LASRERA permit?
  2. Is this project listed with LASRERA, and under what name?
  3. Who holds title to the land, and what is the title document? May my lawyer see a copy before I pay?
  4. Has the building plan been approved, and by which agency?
  5. What title will I receive at handover, and who pays for Governor's consent?
  6. Into which account are instalments paid, and is it in the company's name?
  7. What happens to my money if the project is delayed or stopped?

Vague answers, a refusal to share title documents before payment, or pressure to pay a "reservation fee" today are reasons to pause. A registered developer can still have a weak land title, so treat registration as the first filter, not the last.

If something goes wrong

Because complaints and petitions go to the Authority under section 6 of the 2022 Law, keep a file from day one: the contract, receipts, permit copy and correspondence. A complaint from the UK is easier to make with that file ready, and your lawyer will need the same documents if the dispute goes further.

Paying safely

  • Pay only into an account in the developer's registered company name, never a staff member's personal account.
  • Get a receipt for each instalment that names the unit and the project.
  • Keep the brochure, price list and all messages, which help if you later complain to LASRERA.

Where Pryme fits

Paying instalments from your own Pryme account to the developer's company account leaves a clear trail; Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve each conversion. Ask the developer to issue a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai for each payment. See also off-plan developer due diligence from the UK and what to do when a Lagos developer delays handover.

Questions people ask

How do I check if a Lagos developer is registered with LASRERA?

Use LASRERA's online search and, if the developer or project is not shown, ask LASRERA in writing and request a copy of the current permit.

Do Lagos developers have to register with LASRERA?

Yes. The 2022 Law requires persons dealing in real estate, including developers, to register, and developers to list their projects.

What is the penalty for not registering with LASRERA?

Section 48 sets fines of not less than ₦250,000 for individuals and ₦1,000,000 for companies, with daily penalties.

Does LASRERA registration mean the land title is good?

No. You still need a title search, building approval and a lawyer's review of the contract.
