Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Is there a double tax treaty between Italy and Nigeria?

Is there an Italy–Nigeria double tax treaty? What FIRS and other sources say, why it covers air and shipping only, and what applies to you.

The short answer

Only a limited one. Nigeria's FIRS Information Circular 2022/15 lists the agreement with Italy as covering air and shipping only, so there are no treaty rules for individuals' salaries, rent, dividends or interest. Nigerian domestic withholding rates therefore apply to Nigerian income paid to people in Italy, and any relief in Italy depends on Italian domestic rules.

Many Nigerians in Italy assume there is a full double tax treaty between the two countries, because Italy appears on Nigerian lists of treaty partners. The detail matters. Nigeria's own tax authority has described the Italy agreement as covering air and shipping only, which means it does not set reduced rates or tie-breaker rules for an individual's salary, rent, dividends or interest. This guide sets out what the sources say, why they seem to disagree, and what applies to you in the meantime. It is information, not tax advice.

What the Nigerian sources say

SourceWhat it says about Italy
FIRS Information Circular 2022/15 (11 May 2022)Lists 16 treaties in force and gives the Italy entry as "air and shipping only"
PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, Nigeria withholding taxes (reviewed 29 May 2026)Treaty rate table for dividends, interest and royalties lists Belgium, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Pakistan, the Philippines, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Italy is not in the table
NGEX Diaspora Guide to the 2026 tax reforms, hosted on the NiDCOM website (Jan 2026)Lists 16 double tax agreement countries including Italy, without saying the Italy agreement is limited

These fit together once you read them closely. Italy is one of Nigeria's 16 treaty partners, which is why it appears on lists. But the agreement in force is limited to air and shipping, which is why it is missing from the table of reduced withholding rates. The NGEX guide is a third-party summary that does not flag the limitation; the FIRS circular is the more specific source. FIRS has since become the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), and we found no NRS list published after the 2022 circular.

What "air and shipping only" means for you

An agreement limited to air and shipping deals with the taxation of airline and shipping businesses operating between the two countries. For a person working in Italy with income from Nigeria, or the other way round, it does not provide:

  • Reduced Nigerian withholding tax rates on dividends, interest or royalties paid to Italian residents.
  • A tie-breaker test for someone both countries could treat as resident.
  • Treaty rules allocating taxing rights over salaries, pensions, rent or capital gains.

For comparison, a fuller agreement such as the UK one covers more ground; our Nigeria library explains it in the UK–Nigeria double tax treaty.

What applies without a full treaty

On the Nigerian side

  • Nigerian-source income is taxable in Nigeria even for non-residents. Mondaq's September 2026 summary of the Nigeria Tax Act notes that income accruing in or derived from Nigeria is chargeable for non-residents.
  • Domestic withholding rates apply with no treaty reduction: PwC (May 2026) gives 10% on dividends, interest and rent, and 5% on royalties paid to individuals.
  • For passive income, withholding is often the end of it. The Mondaq summary says non-residents with only passive income such as dividends pay only withholding tax, described as final.
  • If you move back and become Nigerian resident, the NGEX guide says Nigeria gives a unilateral credit for foreign tax even where there is no treaty. Confirm the details with the NRS.

On the Italian side

If you are tax resident in Italy, Italian rules decide how your Nigerian income is taxed in Italy and whether Nigerian tax you paid can be credited. Without a treaty, any relief comes from Italian domestic law alone. Check the Agenzia delle Entrate's guidance or speak to a CAF or commercialista; see claiming credit for Nigerian tax in Italy and Italian tax on income from Nigeria.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example only. You live in Italy and receive ₦1,000,000 of dividends from Nigerian shares. With no treaty rate for Italy, the Nigerian company withholds the domestic 10%, so ₦100,000 is withheld and ₦900,000 is paid to you. Under a full treaty with a lower rate, that withholding could be smaller; under the Italy arrangement, it is not. How the ₦1,000,000 is then treated in your Italian return, and whether the ₦100,000 can be credited, is a matter of Italian rules.

What to check first

  1. Where you are tax resident: see when you become tax resident in Italy.
  2. What Nigerian income you have, and whether tax was withheld at source. Keep the withholding receipts.
  3. Whether a newer agreement has been signed or ratified. Check the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Agenzia delle Entrate lists, and NRS publications, rather than older blog posts.
  4. Whether you need a professional: for rental income, business income or a large disposal, the answer is usually yes.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not give tax advice. A Pryme account can keep naira income from Nigeria separate from your euro money, and you can generate statements and receipts, including verifiable ones made with VerifyDoc.ai, to support a tax return. See receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

Does Italy have a double tax treaty with Nigeria?

Nigeria's FIRS Information Circular 2022/15 lists the Italy agreement as covering air and shipping only. It does not give individuals reduced rates or tie-breaker rules for salaries, rent, dividends or interest.

What withholding tax applies to Nigerian dividends paid to someone in Italy?

With no treaty rate for Italy, the domestic rate applies: PwC gave 10% for dividends and interest as reviewed in May 2026.

Why does Italy appear on lists of Nigeria's tax treaties?

Because there is an agreement in force, but it is limited to air and shipping. Lists that do not mention the limitation can mislead.

How do I avoid paying tax twice on Nigerian income while living in Italy?

Without a full treaty, relief depends on each country's domestic rules. Check the Agenzia delle Entrate's guidance or a CAF or commercialista for the Italian side.
