Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Is MoMo PSB safe? Licence and NDIC cover explained

What MoMo PSB’s own pages say about its CBN licence and NDIC cover, what a payment service bank may and may not do, and how to keep your wallet safe.

The short answer

MoMo Payment Service Bank Limited states on its website that it is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and that its deposits are insured by the NDIC. It is the fintech subsidiary of MTN Nigeria Communications PLC. As a payment service bank it may hold deposits and make payments, but under the CBN’s guidelines it may not lend your money out, which shapes both its risks and its limits.

What MoMo PSB says about its licence

The footer of MoMo PSB’s website reads: "MOMO PAYMENT SERVICE BANK LIMITED IS LICENSED BY THE CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA" and "Deposits are Insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC)". Its FAQ describes the company as "the fintech subsidiary of MTN Nigeria Communications PLC". The site also shows certification badges whose file names refer to ISO 22301 (business continuity) and ISO/IEC 20000-1 (IT service management); these are management standards, not banking licences.

You can confirm any bank’s licence on the CBN’s own list of licensed institutions. A licence is the first test of safety: it means the institution is supervised, must meet capital and reporting rules, and can be sanctioned. See our explainer on CBN bank licence types for how a PSB licence compares with commercial and microfinance licences.

What a payment service bank can and cannot do

The CBN created the payment service bank category in its Guidelines for Licensing and Regulation of Payment Service Banks, issued in October 2018. A law firm review of those guidelines summarises the rules as follows.

AllowedNot allowed
Accept deposits from individuals and small businessesGrant any form of direct or indirect loans, advances or guarantees
Make payments and transfers within NigeriaDeal in foreign exchange, except personal remittances within Nigeria
Issue debit cardsAccept foreign-currency deposits
Operate through banking agentsUnderwrite insurance
Invest in FGN and CBN securitiesAccept airtime and similar closed-scheme value as deposits

The no-lending rule matters for safety. A commercial bank or microfinance bank lends out part of what it holds, so bad loans can threaten deposits. A PSB cannot lend, and invests in government and CBN securities instead. That lowers one kind of risk, though it does not remove operational, fraud or technology risk.

How much NDIC cover applies

MoMo PSB says its deposits are NDIC-insured. Reporting in March 2026 quoted the NDIC’s managing director giving the guaranteed sum per depositor as ₦5 million for deposit money banks, primary mortgage banks and mobile money operators, and ₦2 million for microfinance banks. That report did not name payment service banks separately, so confirm the current PSB limit with the NDIC before relying on it. The NDIC says deposits in CBN-licensed banks are insured without registration or a fee, and uses BVN to find a depositor’s accounts.

In practice, MoMo’s own tier caps keep most wallets small. Tier 1 and Tier 2 balances are capped at ₦300,000 and ₦500,000. Only Tier 3 has no cumulative balance limit, and that is where the insured limit becomes relevant. Our explainer on NDIC insurance limits covers how payouts work.

TierHow you get itSingle deposit limitCumulative balance limit
Tier 1Default when you open with *671# or the app₦50,000₦300,000
Tier 2Link your BVN with *671*8*2#₦200,000₦500,000
Tier 3Call 671 to request it after your BVN is linked₦5,000,000No cumulative limit stated

The risks that are on you

Licensing protects against the bank failing. It does not protect against someone else getting into your wallet. Most losses on mobile wallets come from shared PINs, SIM swaps and fake customer care. Practical steps:

  • Never share your MoMo PIN or one-time codes, including with anyone claiming to be from MoMo or MTN.
  • Use only the contact channels on momo.ng: toll-free 671, WhatsApp 07031594671 and customercare@momo.ng.
  • If your SIM suddenly stops working, contact MTN at once; your wallet sits on that line.
  • Check your balance after every agent transaction before you leave.

Our guides on USSD banking fraud and fake customer care go further. User complaints in reviews have also mentioned app errors and delayed transactions; keep references for every transaction so you can raise a dispute.

A quick safety checklist

  1. Confirm the licence statement on momo.ng and on the CBN’s list of licensed institutions.
  2. Know your tier and keep balances you cannot afford to lose within limits you understand.
  3. Save the official contacts in your phone now, so you are not searching for them during a problem.
  4. Turn off message previews on your lock screen, so codes are not visible to anyone holding your phone.
  5. Review your transaction history weekly and report anything you do not recognise the same day.

How MoMo compares with a regular bank account

A MoMo wallet is a bank account in law, with a CBN licence behind it, but it is built for small, frequent payments. It suits people who want to send, receive and pay bills from an MTN line, including without data. It is less suited to holding large savings, because of the tier caps, and it cannot offer loans or foreign currency. Many people use a PSB wallet alongside a commercial or microfinance bank account rather than instead of one.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial Ltd is a technology company, not a bank. Naira deposits in a Pryme account are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, which is licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Pryme uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes, plus a transaction PIN; see security.
