Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Is it legal to hold dollars in Nigeria? The rules in plain words

Yes, Nigerians may hold foreign currency in an account with an authorised institution. What the law says, where the limits are and what to avoid.

The short answer

Yes. Nigerian law allows any person to open and operate a foreign currency (domiciliary) account with an authorised dealer, and to hold more than one. What the law restricts is how foreign currency is traded: buying and selling should go through authorised channels, and selling withdrawn foreign currency to an unauthorised dealer is an offence.

The law that applies

The main statute is the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. Three of its provisions matter most to an individual.

  • Section 17(1): any person may open, maintain and operate a domiciliary account designated in foreign currency with an authorised dealer.
  • Section 17(4): a person may open more than one domiciliary account.
  • Section 17(3): an applicant is not obliged to disclose the source of the foreign currency, unless another law requires it.

That third point needs care. Anti-money laundering rules are "other law", and banks are required to carry out identity checks and ask about the purpose of transactions. In practice, expect to be asked where larger sums came from.

What the CBN's rules add

The Act sets the framework; the Central Bank of Nigeria sets the operating rules through circulars and its Foreign Exchange Manual. The fourth edition of the Manual took effect on 1 June 2026, replacing the 2018 edition. Summaries from law firms and the press highlight these points for individuals:

  • Holders of ordinary domiciliary accounts have unrestricted access to their funds, reversing curbs introduced in 2020.
  • Outward remittances funded from your own domiciliary account no longer need Form A, with telegraphic transfers of up to $10,000 a day allowed. Banks must still record the purpose.
  • Tuition remittances abroad can go up to $25,000 per semester.
  • Personal and business travel allowances can be paid 25% in cash, with the rest electronically, for example to a card.

Rules change. Check the current position with your bank or the CBN before you plan around a specific limit.

What is not allowed

  • Selling to unauthorised dealers. Section 30 of the Act makes it an offence for a depositor to withdraw foreign currency from an account and sell it to an unauthorised dealer, in or outside Nigeria.
  • Using unlicensed operators. Bureaux de change must be licensed by the CBN, and the CBN's 2024 guidelines require larger BDC sales, above $500, to be settled electronically rather than in cash. Our guide to buying dollars legally sets out the routes.
  • Hiding the source of funds. Structuring deposits to avoid checks is a money laundering red flag and can get an account frozen.

Holding cash at home

No law stops you keeping foreign notes at home, but it is risky: theft, fire and no protection. Cash brought into Nigeria above certain thresholds must be declared at the port of entry. Under section 21 of the Act, foreign cash above $10,000 that is imported and deposited in a domiciliary account can only be withdrawn or taken out again as cash, which shows why banks treat large cash deposits carefully.

Worked example and common myths

Example only. Chioma earns ₦900,000 a month and receives $250 a month from a brother in Houston.

  1. The $250 is paid into a foreign currency account in her own name, so it stays in dollars and has a clear record.
  2. When she needs naira, she converts with her bank or provider and keeps the record of the rate and fee.
  3. She does not sell dollars to a street trader, both because of section 30 and because she would have no protection against counterfeit notes or short-changing.

Common myths

"The government can convert my dollars to naira."
The Act lets you hold foreign currency in a domiciliary account, and the 2026 Manual, according to published summaries, confirms unrestricted access to ordinary domiciliary balances. Watch for official CBN announcements rather than social media rumours.
"I need permission to receive dollars from abroad."
No special permission is needed to receive money into your own foreign currency account. The bank will run its normal checks.
"Only businesses can hold euros or pounds."
The Act applies to any person, so individuals can hold accounts in any currency an authorised dealer offers.
"A dollar account means my savings cannot lose value."
Your balance does not change in dollars, but dollar prices also rise over time, and you may lose on conversion spreads. Our piece on saving in dollars covers the trade-offs.

Is my foreign currency protected?

Protection depends on who holds the money. The NDIC insures deposits at licensed banks up to set limits; our guide to NDIC insurance limits explains how cover works. For foreign balances, ask your bank or provider in writing which institution holds the money and what protection applies. You can also check whether a bank or fintech is licensed.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme lets you hold NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one account in your own name, with local account details for each currency and a record of every payment. Conversion happens with Swap: rate shown first, fee on its own line, and you approve. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN and NDIC-insured up to the applicable limit. See multicurrency.

Questions people ask

Is it illegal to keep dollars in Nigeria?

No. The Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act allows any person to open and operate a domiciliary account with an authorised dealer. Selling withdrawn foreign currency to an unauthorised dealer is what the Act makes an offence.

Can I have more than one dollar account in Nigeria?

Yes. Section 17(4) of the Act says a person may open more than one domiciliary account.

Will my bank ask where my dollars came from?

It may. The Act says you are not obliged to disclose the source unless another law requires it, but anti-money laundering rules require banks to check identity and the purpose of transactions.

Is it legal to buy dollars from mallams on the street?

Selling foreign currency withdrawn from an account to an unauthorised dealer is an offence under section 30 of the Act. Use licensed channels such as banks and CBN-licensed bureaux de change.
