Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How long to keep business records: IRS rules and agents

How long the IRS says a US small business should keep tax, payroll and asset records, and how an AI agent can file, index and retain them safely.

The short answer

The IRS generally expects records supporting a return to be kept for at least three years after filing, with longer periods in some cases: six years if income was substantially under-reported, seven for bad debt or worthless securities claims, at least four for employment tax records, and indefinitely if no return was filed. An AI agent can file each record against the transaction it supports and hold the retention date, so nothing is lost or deleted early.

The IRS periods, in summary

The IRS's guidance on how long to keep records ties each period to the time it has to assess additional tax, known as the period of limitations. The table below summarises the main cases it lists. Your own situation may need longer, and state tax agencies and other laws can set their own periods.

SituationKeep records for
You owe additional tax and none of the cases below apply3 years after filing
You claim a loss from worthless securities or a bad debt deduction7 years
You do not report income you should, and it is more than 25% of the gross income shown6 years
You do not file a returnIndefinitely
You file a fraudulent returnIndefinitely
Employment tax recordsAt least 4 years after the tax is due or paid, whichever is later

Records relating to property, such as equipment or a building, should generally be kept until the period of limitations expires for the year in which you dispose of the property, because you need them to work out depreciation and any gain or loss.

Other rules can run longer than the IRS periods. Insurers, lenders, landlords and state agencies may expect records for their own purposes, and employment laws set separate periods for personnel and I-9 files. A practical approach many advisers suggest is to keep core financial records for seven years and asset records for as long as the asset plus seven years, but agree the rule with your own adviser and write it down so the agent applies it consistently.

What counts as a record

  • Gross receipts: invoices, sales records, deposit records, marketplace and card processor statements, Forms 1099 you receive.
  • Purchases and expenses: receipts, bills, cancelled cheques or payment confirmations, and what each was for.
  • Assets: purchase documents, improvement costs, depreciation records and sale documents.
  • Payroll: wages paid, tax withheld, deposits, Forms W-4, copies of returns filed and W-2s.
  • Contractors: Forms W-9 and W-8, agreements, and 1099s issued.
  • Supporting documents for decisions: your written bookkeeping rules and the reasons for unusual entries.

IRS Publication 583 says the records you keep should show income, expenses and the basis of assets, and that electronic records are acceptable if they are accurate, accessible and legible. A phone photo of a receipt, filed against the right transaction, is far more useful than the paper original in a drawer.

How an agent keeps the archive in order

  1. Attach each document to the transaction it supports at the time, not at year end.
  2. Index by year, type and counterparty so a request from an auditor or lender can be answered quickly.
  3. Hold a retention date on each record based on the rules you and your adviser set, defaulting to the longer period when unsure.
  4. Never delete on its own. When a retention date passes, it lists the records for a person to approve disposal.
  5. Keep an audit trail of every access, change and export.
  6. Check completeness monthly: transactions over a set amount with no supporting document are listed for you.

The monthly completeness check is where most of the value sits. A missing receipt is easy to get in the week it happened and nearly impossible to get two years later. An agent that lists the gaps every month, while suppliers still have the paperwork, keeps the archive whole without a year-end chase.

Worked example

Example only. A small roofing company in North Carolina is asked by a lender for three years of financial statements and supporting tax returns, and separately receives an IRS letter querying a vehicle deduction from two years ago.

Because receipts, mileage logs and the vehicle purchase documents were filed against transactions when they happened, the agent assembles the lender pack and a separate file for the IRS query in under an hour. The owner sends the IRS file to the company's CPA, who replies to the letter. Nothing had to be searched for in email or boxes. The agent did not reply to the IRS; it prepared the evidence.

The same archive later supports a sale of one of the company's trucks. Because the purchase price, improvements and depreciation were all on file, the CPA works out the gain without estimating any figure.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on the bank to keep statements. Banks may not keep them for as long as you need, or may charge to retrieve them.
  • Deleting a former software subscription without exporting the data first.
  • Keeping receipts with no note of the business purpose.
  • Mixing personal and business documents, which makes it hard to produce one without the other.
  • Shredding asset records after three years, when the asset is still in use.

Where Pryme fits

On a Pryme Business account, every action by a person or an agent is on the audit trail, and the Finance agent keeps each posting traced to a named source. The Compliance agent can hold retention dates as obligations. Statements are available per currency; see how it works. For what an agent's own log should contain, read audit trails for AI agents, and for setting up the books, AI bookkeeping for a US LLC.

Questions people ask

How long should a small business keep tax records?

Generally at least three years after filing, but longer in several cases set out by the IRS, including seven years for bad debt claims and at least four years for employment tax records. Ask your adviser.

Are scanned or photographed receipts acceptable to the IRS?

The IRS accepts electronic records if they are accurate, complete and legible and you can produce them when asked.

Should an AI agent delete old records automatically?

No. It can list records past their retention date, but a person should approve any disposal, after checking that no audit, claim or asset still needs them.

Do state tax agencies have different retention periods?

They can. Check your state revenue department's guidance and keep records for the longer of the federal and state periods.
