2018OjirehPrime Card

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ireland

Will Irish car insurers accept Nigerian driving experience?

Some Irish insurers give weight to driving history from abroad, some do not. What drives the quote, the licence question and how to present your record.

The short answer

There is no single rule: each Irish insurer decides how much weight to give driving experience from outside the EU/EEA, and many treat a Nigerian licence holder much like a new driver until an Irish licence and Irish claims history are in place. What you can control is the licence you hold (the RSA allows visitors to drive on a valid non-EU licence for up to one year, but residents must start the Irish licensing steps), the evidence you bring and how many insurers you ask.

Nigerians who have driven for ten or fifteen years in Lagos or Abuja are often quoted Irish premiums that look like those for a teenager. The reaction is understandable. The explanation is that insurers price on data they can verify and compare, and driving history from Nigeria is hard for them to check. Knowing how the decision is made helps you get a fairer quote.

What an insurer is weighing

Licence type
A full Irish or EU licence, a learner permit, or a foreign licence. Each is priced differently.
Licence history
How long you have held a licence the insurer recognises.
No-claims record
Years without a claim, usually proven by a letter from your previous insurer.
Car and address
The vehicle's value and power, and where it is kept overnight.
Use
Commuting, business or social driving only.

Nigerian experience can affect the second and third items, but only if the insurer accepts the evidence. Insurers decide this for themselves; there is no single industry rule we could find published by a regulator.

The licence question comes first

The RSA says a visitor can drive on a current, valid licence from outside the EU/EEA for up to one year, and that holders from a non-recognised state must also carry an international driving permit from their own country. Once you take up normal residence, the RSA says you need to go through the steps to get an Irish licence. Nigeria is not named on the RSA's exchange page, so most Nigerian residents follow the learner permit route. Read how long a Nigerian licence is valid in Ireland.

This matters for insurance because a policy is written on the facts you declare. If you declare a licence you are not entitled to drive on, or leave out that you are resident, the policy may not respond when you need it.

How to present your Nigerian record

  1. Get a letter from your Nigerian insurer, on headed paper, stating your name, the policy period and that no claims were made. Ask for it in English with contact details an Irish insurer can verify.
  2. Keep a copy of your Nigerian licence showing the first issue date.
  3. If you drove a company vehicle, ask your former employer for a letter confirming the years you drove without incident.
  4. Ask each insurer directly whether it accepts no-claims evidence from outside the EU/EEA and in what form.

Some insurers will accept such letters and some will not. Asking several, and a broker who deals with many, is the only way to find out today.

Ways to bring the premium down

  • Named driver: being added to a policy held by an experienced Irish licence holder can build Irish history, if the insurer allows it.
  • The car: a smaller, lower-value car is usually cheaper to insure.
  • Pass the Irish test: moving from learner permit to full licence typically changes the price.
  • Build a claim-free year: Irish no-claims history counts once you have it.
  • Telematics: some policies price on how you actually drive; ask whether one is offered.

A worked example

Example only, with invented quotes. You receive three quotes: €2,400 treating you as a new driver, €1,850 from an insurer that accepts your Nigerian no-claims letter, and €1,600 if you are added as a named driver on a family member's policy. The gap between the first and second, €550, is the value of getting your Nigerian paperwork accepted.

Questions to ask every insurer

  1. Do you accept no-claims evidence from an insurer outside the EU/EEA? In what form?
  2. How do you treat a driver on a learner permit who has years of driving abroad?
  3. What happens to the premium when I pass the Irish driving test? Will you re-rate mid-term?
  4. Are there any drivers or uses excluded from this quote?
  5. Is the price the same if I pay monthly, or is there a credit charge?

Write down the answers with the date and the name of the person you spoke to. Quotes change, and a record of what you were told helps if there is a disagreement later. If you are paying monthly, the instalment arrangement is often a form of credit, so compare the total you will pay over the year, not just the monthly figure.

If something goes wrong

If you think an insurer has handled a claim or complaint unfairly, complain to the insurer first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman, which is independent and free, can examine the complaint through its online form.

Where Pryme fits

Car insurance is often paid in one go. If part of it comes from naira savings, a Pryme account holds naira and euro together and converts with Swap when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve.

Questions people ask

Do Irish insurers accept a Nigerian no-claims bonus?

Some may and some may not; each insurer decides. Bring a dated letter from your Nigerian insurer and ask each insurer or broker directly.

Why is my car insurance so high in Ireland?

Insurers price on licence type, recognised licence history, no-claims evidence, the car and where you live. A foreign licence with history they cannot verify often costs more.

Can I insure a car in Ireland on a Nigerian licence?

Visitors can drive on a valid non-EU licence for up to a year under RSA rules; residents must start the Irish licensing steps. Declare your situation exactly to the insurer.

Who do I complain to about an Irish insurer?

Complain to the insurer first, then to the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman, which is free and independent.
