Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ireland

Driving in Ireland on a Nigerian licence: how long is it valid?

Visitors can drive on a valid non-EU licence for up to a year. Why residence changes that, the permit you also need, and what to do before time runs out.

The short answer

The RSA says a visitor can drive in Ireland on a current, valid licence from outside the EU/EEA for up to one year, and a licence from a non-recognised state such as Nigeria must be carried with an international driving permit from your own country. Once you take up normal residence in Ireland, the RSA says you need to go through the steps to get an Irish licence, so a new resident should not treat the year as a guaranteed grace period.

The "12-month rule" is one of the most repeated pieces of advice among Nigerians in Ireland, and also one of the most misunderstood. It is real, but it is framed around visitors. Whether it helps you depends on whether you are visiting or living here, and on whether your licence and permit are in order.

What the RSA actually says

The RSA's foreign licence page sets out three points that matter for a Nigerian licence holder:

  • Visitors: you can drive on a licence from outside the EU/EEA "for up to one year", provided it is "current and valid".
  • Non-recognised states: you must also hold an international driving permit (IDP) from your own country.
  • Residents: on taking up normal residence you "need to go through the necessary steps to obtain a driving licence".

Nigeria is not named on the RSA's exchange page as a country whose licences can be exchanged, so for most readers the non-recognised-state rules are the ones to follow. Confirm on the NDLS recognised-states list.

Visitor or resident: which are you?

The RSA page uses "normal residence" without setting out a day count on that page. In plain terms, someone who has moved to Ireland to work or study for a sustained period, with a home here, is likely to be treated as normally resident, while someone here for a holiday or a short family visit is a visitor. If you hold an Irish immigration permission such as Stamp 1, 1G, 2 or 4 and have a lease, you should assume you are a resident and plan accordingly.

Your situationWhat the RSA rules point to
Visiting family for a few weeksDrive on your valid Nigerian licence plus IDP
Arrived on a work permit and renting a flatStart the Irish licensing steps; residence is the trigger
Student on Stamp 2 for a degreeStart the Irish licensing steps if you need to drive
Licence expired while hereDo not drive on it; a licence must be current and valid

The international driving permit

An IDP is a translation-style document issued in the country that issued your licence. The RSA says it must come from your own country, so get it in Nigeria before you travel or through the issuing authority's process for people abroad. An IDP is carried alongside the licence; it does not replace it, and it does not extend the one-year period.

Common misreadings of the rule

  • "The year restarts each time I travel." Nothing on the RSA page says a trip home resets anything, and once you live here residence is the test, not the date of your last arrival.
  • "The year runs from when I got my IRP card." The RSA page does not tie the period to immigration registration.
  • "My IDP makes my Nigerian licence an Irish one." It does not; it travels with your licence.
  • "A learner permit lets me drive alone." Learner permit holders drive under conditions set by the RSA, so read those conditions before you drive on one.

The safest approach for anyone who has moved here is to treat the Nigerian licence as a bridge for the first weeks while you start the Irish process, not as a year of free driving.

Why it matters beyond the law

  • Insurance: an insurer may refuse a claim if you were not entitled to drive on the licence you held. Tell the insurer exactly what you hold. See Irish insurers and Nigerian driving experience.
  • Garda checks: carry the licence and IDP whenever you drive.
  • Time: the Irish route has several stages, so starting late can leave you without a lawful way to drive.

Steps if you are staying

Revenue notes that anyone without a PPSN requests one from the Department of Social Protection; it is the first number you will need for almost everything that follows.

  1. Get your PPSN and a verified MyGovID; several NDLS online services need them.
  2. Book the driver theory test.
  3. Apply for a learner permit once the theory test is passed.
  4. Complete the required lessons with an approved instructor.
  5. Book and pass the driving test, then apply for the full licence.

Current fees and waiting times are on rsa.ie and ndls.ie. The exchange question is covered in can I exchange a Nigerian driving licence in Ireland, and the learner route in learner permit and driving test for Nigerians.

Where Pryme fits

Lessons and test fees are euro costs. If you are funding them from naira, a Pryme account holds both currencies and Swap converts when you choose, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I drive in Ireland with a Nigerian licence?

As a visitor, yes, for up to one year on a current, valid licence plus an international driving permit, according to the RSA.

Does the 12 months apply if I live in Ireland?

The RSA frames the one-year period for visitors. On taking up normal residence, it says you need to take the steps to get an Irish licence.

Do I need an international driving permit for Ireland?

Yes, if your licence is from a non-recognised state. The RSA says the permit must come from your own country.

What happens if my Nigerian licence expires in Ireland?

The RSA allows driving only on a current and valid licence, so an expired licence cannot be used.
