Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing malt and soft drinks from Nigeria: UK rules

Sugar levy rates from April 2026, who pays it on imported drinks, and the label and additive checks Nigerian malt, zobo and soft drinks face.

The short answer

A Nigerian malt, zobo or fizzy drink is liable for the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy if it has added sugar, at least 5g of sugar per 100ml and 1.2% ABV or less; from 1 April 2026 the levy is £0.208 a litre at 5g to under 8g and £0.278 a litre at 8g or more. Whoever arranges the import usually registers, reports and pays, and the drinks also need UK-compliant labels and permitted additives.

Malt drinks, Chapman-style mixes, bottled zobo and Nigerian-made sodas sit in many African grocery shops in the UK. Bringing them in commercially means dealing with three separate sets of rules: a tax on sugar, food labelling, and checks on colours and preservatives that the UK authorities already sample for.

Is the drink liable for the sugar levy?

HMRC's liability page (updated 25 March 2026) says a drink is liable when all of these apply:

  • sugar was added during production, or an added ingredient contains sugar (fruit juice, vegetable juice and milk do not count for this test);
  • it has at least 5g of total sugar per 100ml, ready to drink or after dilution;
  • it is packaged ready to drink or to be diluted;
  • its alcohol content is 1.2% ABV or lower.

Sweeteners such as stevia, aspartame and sucralose do not count as sugar. Exemptions include milk-based drinks with at least 75ml of milk per 100ml, drinks made only with fruit or vegetable juice and no other added sugar, and powdered drinks. Many malt drinks and sweetened zobo will meet the test; check each product's nutrition panel.

Worked example (illustrative only)

A pallet of 2,400 cans of a malt drink at 330ml with 9g sugar per 100ml: 2,400 × 0.33 = 792 litres × £0.278 = £220.18 of levy at the April 2026 rate. The same pallet of a zobo at 6g per 100ml would be 792 × £0.208 = £164.74.

Who pays on imported drinks

HMRC's guidance on bringing liable drinks into the UK sets the rule by who arranges the import. If an overseas supplier with a UK presence arranges it, the supplier registers, reports and pays. Otherwise the customer who brings the drinks in does, and anyone bringing in stock for their own business use does. Businesses that only transport or warehouse drinks are not liable. Where it is unclear, agree in writing with your trading partner who will account for it; HMRC warns that arrangements where nobody pays can lead to interest, penalties and possibly criminal charges.

  • Imported liable drinks go on your quarterly levy returns for the period they arrive.
  • Drinks from a small producer are reported but carry no levy, if you hold a dated letter from the producer stating its litres produced in the last 12 months.
  • Keep litre records for each period for 6 years.

Labels, colours and preservatives

Prepacked drinks sold in Great Britain need the standard food label: name, ingredients with allergens emphasised, net quantity, date mark, nutrition declaration and, from 1 January 2024, a UK address for the food business operator or UK importer. A label designed for Nigeria rarely meets this on its own, so many importers over-sticker; see UK food labelling for Nigerian products.

The UK National Monitoring Plan for 2026/27 lists soft drinks from Nigeria and Ghana for sampling for non-permitted colours, and soft drinks from Nigeria, Ghana and the USA for benzoic acid, both at low priority. A drink that uses a colour or preservative permitted in Nigeria but not in GB can be refused; ask your supplier for the full additive list and check it before shipping.

Steps before the first order

  1. Get the supplier's specification: sugar per 100ml, additives, ABV (some malts contain trace alcohol).
  2. Decide in writing who accounts for the levy, then register if it is you.
  3. Register your food business with the local council at least 28 days before trading (see registering as an importer).
  4. Get an EORI number and a commodity code; DCTS may remove customs duty but not the levy.
  5. Prepare UK labels before goods land.

Keeping records the levy needs

The levy is reported in litres, so your records must show litres of each liable product by sugar band for every quarter, kept for 6 years from the end of the period. In practice that means keeping the supplier specification, the commercial invoice and packing list showing pack sizes and counts, and the delivery note for each consignment. If a product's recipe changes in Nigeria, its sugar content and therefore its band can change too; ask the supplier to tell you before shipping, not after. Drinks lost, destroyed or exported may qualify for a credit under separate HMRC guidance, which is easier to claim when stock records are clean. Agree with your supplier who keeps the small producer letter, if one applies, since it must be dated within 6 months of import.

Where Pryme fits

Nigerian drinks makers usually want naira. A Pryme Business Account holds GBP and NGN, and Swap converts when you choose, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve. Bulk payouts help when one order means paying a manufacturer, a haulier and a clearing agent. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do Nigerian malt drinks pay sugar tax in the UK?

If they have added sugar and 5g or more of sugar per 100ml, yes. From 1 April 2026 the rate is £0.208 a litre at 5g to under 8g and £0.278 a litre at 8g or more.

Who pays the soft drinks levy on imports?

Usually whoever arranges the import: the overseas supplier if it has a UK presence and arranges it, otherwise the UK customer bringing the drinks in.

Is zobo liable for the sugar levy?

Hibiscus is not fruit juice, so sugar added to zobo counts. If the packaged drink reaches 5g per 100ml, it is liable.

Why are some Nigerian soft drinks refused in the UK?

One reason is additives. The UK monitoring plan samples Nigerian soft drinks for non-permitted colours and benzoic acid.
