Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Holding USD in a US account while earning in naira

Paid in naira but living in the US? How to build a dollar balance without converting every payment, what the CBN rules allow, and what to report.

The short answer

If you live in the US and are paid in naira, the usual set-up is to let the naira land in a Nigerian naira account, convert in planned batches rather than every payment, and move dollars to your US account by wire from a Nigerian domiciliary account. Since 1 June 2026 the CBN FX Manual lets holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts send up to USD 10,000 a day by direct transfer without Form A.

Some Nigerians in the US still draw naira income: a salary from a Nigerian employer, consulting fees from Lagos clients, rent, or a share of a family business. Living costs are in dollars, so the temptation is to convert every payment the day it arrives. That turns each payment into a separate conversion, each with its own spread and transfer charge. A little structure reduces both cost and paperwork.

The three accounts in the chain

Nigerian naira account
Where the naira lands. It should be in your own name, matching your BVN or NRBVN.
Nigerian domiciliary (dom) account
Holds dollars in Nigeria. You fund it by buying dollars through your bank, and it is the account you wire from.
US checking or savings account
Where the dollars end up for spending. Deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are covered to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category (FDIC).

If you do not yet have a BVN, the non-resident route is explained at NRBVN: the BVN for Nigerians abroad.

What the CBN rules allow in 2026

The CBN's Foreign Exchange Manual, 4th edition, took effect on 1 June 2026. Two points matter for a naira earner abroad, as summarised by Pavestones on Mondaq (24 June 2026):

  • Form A is no longer required for outward remittances by holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts.
  • Domiciliary account holders may make direct telegraphic transfers of up to USD 10,000 per day.

"Self-funded" matters. Banks treat dollars in a dom account differently depending on how they got there. Sterling Bank's dom FAQ (August 2021), for example, separates an Inflow account (electronic credits, can be transferred) from a Cash Deposit account (cash lodgements, no transfers), and Union Bank's dom page lists a 2% charge on the transfer of cash deposits. Ask your bank which of your dollars count as transferable before you plan a wire.

Convert in batches, not every payment

Each conversion carries a spread between the rate you get and the reference rate. Each wire carries a fixed charge on the Nigerian side and often an incoming fee in the US. Batching spreads the fixed costs over a larger amount.

Worked example (illustrative figures, not quotes): you receive ₦1,500,000 a month. Converting and wiring monthly means 12 wires a year. If each wire costs about $35 in combined fixed charges, that is $420. Wiring quarterly is four wires, about $140, saving roughly $280 a year before any difference in rates. The trade-off is that your naira waits longer, exposed to the exchange rate in the meantime.

ApproachWires a yearFixed charges at $35 each (example)Exchange-rate exposure
Convert and wire every month12$420Lowest
Convert monthly, wire quarterly4$140Low (dollars sit in the dom account)
Hold naira, convert and wire quarterly4$140Higher (naira sits for up to three months)

The middle option is often the balance point: convert to dollars as income arrives, hold them in the dom account, and wire in batches within the daily limit. Check your own bank's charges; UBA's September 2026 tariff, for instance, lists foreign-currency international transfers at 0.5% (minimum $10) plus VAT and a $25 telex charge.

What the US side expects

  • FBAR: if your Nigerian accounts together exceed $10,000 at any point in the calendar year, a US person files FinCEN Form 114 electronically, due 15 April with an automatic extension to 15 October (IRS).
  • Form 8938: separate thresholds apply; for a single filer living in the US it is more than $50,000 on the last day of the year or $75,000 at any time (IRS comparison page, September 2026).
  • Income: as a US tax resident your worldwide income is generally taxable in the US, naira income included, converted to dollars. The IRS yearly average rate table has no naira row, so you use a posted rate consistently.

These are information points, not advice. For the reporting detail see FBAR for Nigerian bank accounts and which rate to use on a US return.

Steps

  1. Have the naira paid into a Nigerian account in your own name, with your BVN or NRBVN linked.
  2. Open a domiciliary account at the same bank so conversion and transfer happen in one place.
  3. Ask the bank in writing which dollars in the dom account are treated as self-funded and transferable.
  4. Convert on a schedule you choose, and keep each conversion advice.
  5. Wire to your US account in batches within the daily limit, and keep the wire confirmation for your records.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from the US and holds NGN and USD side by side, each with its own account details. Naira income can stay in naira until you decide to convert; Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and the dollars then sit in the USD balance. Verifiable statements through VerifyDoc.ai can help when a US bank or accountant asks where funds came from.

Questions people ask

Can I send dollars from my Nigerian dom account to the US without Form A?

Under the CBN FX Manual effective 1 June 2026, holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts can make direct transfers of up to USD 10,000 per day without Form A (Mondaq, June 2026). Your bank decides which balances count as self-funded.

Is it better to convert naira every month or wait?

Monthly conversion lowers exchange-rate risk; batching the wires lowers fixed charges. Many people convert as income arrives and wire every few months.

Do I pay US tax on my Nigerian salary?

A US tax resident is generally taxed on worldwide income, including naira income converted to dollars. Speak to a tax professional about credits for any Nigerian tax paid.

Will my US bank ask about money coming from Nigeria?

Banks can ask about the source and purpose of incoming wires. Keeping payslips, invoices and conversion advices makes answering simple.
