Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Holding naira for future property payments from the US

Buying off-plan or building in stages from the US means paying naira over months. When to convert early, when to wait, and the exchange-rate risk.

The short answer

If your property payments in Nigeria are fixed in naira and due on known dates, converting dollars to naira ahead of each payment, and holding it until the date, removes the risk of a bad rate on the day. The cost is that idle naira loses value to inflation, which was reported at 14.63% in October 2026, and, if the naira falls, dollars kept back would have bought more. Many buyers split the difference: convert for the next one or two stages, keep the rest in dollars.

The decision in one table

Property in Nigeria is usually paid in instalments: a deposit, then stage payments to a developer, or rounds of materials and labour if you are building. Each is due in naira. From the US you choose when to turn dollars into naira.

ApproachProtects you fromExposes you to
Convert everything now and hold nairaA stronger dollar rate becoming unavailable later; last-minute conversionNaira weakening while you wait; inflation eating the balance; deposit insurance limits
Keep dollars, convert at each stageNaira weakness (you convert later at more naira per dollar)A sudden naira recovery or a bad rate on the payment day
Convert one or two stages aheadPayment-day risk for near stagesSome of both, in smaller amounts

No one can tell you which way the naira will move. The useful question is which risk you can afford: a payment that is short because the rate moved, or naira that buys less dollar value later.

Why fixed-naira contracts change the answer

If your contract fixes stage prices in naira, holding naira for the next stage matches what you owe; the developer is carrying the cost risk. If the contract lets the developer raise prices with materials costs, as many building contracts do, holding naira early protects you less, because the naira bill itself can rise. Read the clause before deciding, and if the price is quoted in dollars, keep the money in dollars. Our guide to protecting money when paying for land from the US covers contracts and escrow.

Inflation and where the naira sits

Voice of Nigeria reported on 16 October 2026 that headline inflation had dropped to 14.63%. Naira that sits in a current account for a year at that rate buys roughly an eighth less building work. Earning interest on it softens that, so where you hold it matters. Match the deposit to the payment date: a fixed-term deposit that ends shortly before each stage, rather than money that is locked past the date you need it.

Mind deposit insurance. The NDIC's FAQ says it covers up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at deposit money banks and ₦2,000,000 at microfinance banks. A property fund of ₦40 million is far above either limit, so the bank's soundness matters, and some buyers spread large sums across institutions.

Worked example (illustrative)

Ada in Atlanta has agreed to pay ₦30,000,000 in three equal stages of ₦10,000,000, six months apart, at fixed naira prices. She has the dollars now. At an example rate of ₦1,500 per dollar, each stage costs $6,667.

  • If she converts all $20,000 now and the naira later weakens to ₦1,650, she has given up the extra naira the later stages would have bought: about ₦2,000,000 over the two later stages. Her payments are still covered.
  • If she waits and the naira strengthens to ₦1,350, each later stage costs about $7,407 instead of $6,667, so the two later stages cost about $1,481 more, roughly ₦2,200,000 at today's example rate.
  • If she converts stage one now, stage two three months before it is due, and stage three three months before that, each conversion happens close to the bill and in a smaller amount.

Rates here are examples, not forecasts. The arithmetic is the point: the cost of being wrong is similar either way, so many people stage their conversions rather than bet on one direction.

Building rather than buying

Self-build projects are harder to plan than off-plan purchases because the naira cost is not fixed. Cement, iron rods and labour are priced week by week, so a naira pot sized to a quote from six months ago may fall short. Ask the builder or quantity surveyor for a staged budget, convert for the stage that is about to start, and keep a contingency, often a tenth or more of the stage cost, in naira so work does not stop while you convert more.

Practical points from the US

  1. Keep the property money in a separate naira pot from family and day-to-day spending, so it is not drawn down by mistake.
  2. Pay the developer or supplier by bank transfer to an account in the company's name and keep every receipt.
  3. Before paying, check title and approvals; see verifying land in Lagos from the US.
  4. Note that a Nigerian account above $10,000 in combined value can bring US FBAR reporting; see whether a Nigerian account is a foreign financial account.
  5. Record each conversion: date, dollars, naira, rate. It helps for tax and for knowing what the property truly cost you in dollars.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme lets you hold dollars and naira in one account and convert stage by stage with Swap, seeing the rate and the fee before you approve (Swap). For naira you are holding until a stage date, a Fixed Savings Box keeps it apart from everyday money; rates are shown in the app (Savings Boxes). Savings Boxes are for naira only. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit.

Questions people ask

Should I convert dollars to naira now for a property in Nigeria?

If the price is fixed in naira and due soon, converting ahead removes payment-day risk. For stages far away, keeping dollars avoids naira weakness. Many buyers convert one or two stages ahead.

Is it safe to keep large naira sums in a Nigerian bank?

The NDIC covers up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at deposit money banks and ₦2,000,000 at microfinance banks, per its FAQ. Larger sums depend on the bank's soundness, so some people spread them.

How does inflation affect naira saved for building?

It reduces what the naira buys. Headline inflation was reported at 14.63% in October 2026. Earning interest on the balance and matching deposits to payment dates softens the loss.

Do I report my Nigerian property fund to the IRS?

If your foreign accounts together exceed $10,000 at any time in the year, FBAR applies; Form 8938 may apply at higher thresholds. This is information, not tax advice.
