Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Can you hold naira while living in Canada?

The ways a Nigerian in Canada can keep a naira balance: a Nigerian bank account as a non-resident, a remittance app wallet or a multicurrency account.

The short answer

Yes. A Nigerian living in Canada can hold naira in a Nigerian bank account opened as a non-resident, usually through the NRBVN route or a bank's diaspora pack, in a naira wallet inside some remittance apps, or in a multicurrency account that includes NGN. Banks typically ask for your BVN or NRBVN, a Nigerian or notarised foreign ID, and recent proof of your Canadian address.

Why keep a naira balance at all

Many Nigerians in Canada still have costs at home: school fees for a sibling, rent on a flat in Lagos, contributions to family events, a project with a builder in Abeokuta. Paying each one by converting Canadian dollars on the day can mean many small conversions and many fees. A naira balance lets you receive naira income, such as rent or payments from Nigerian clients, and spend it in naira without converting twice. The trade-off is that a naira balance loses Canadian dollar value if the naira weakens; our article on naira devaluation and savings looks at that risk.

Option 1: a Nigerian bank account as a non-resident

Most large Nigerian banks open accounts for Nigerians abroad. The identity step is the Bank Verification Number. If you never had a BVN, or had one but no account, the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) lets you enrol remotely: Access Bank describes registering on the NRBVN platform, choosing a preferred bank, completing a liveness check and receiving the NRBVN within 72 hours of approval. GTBank describes the same route for opening NGN, USD or EUR accounts, with fees "displayed during the transaction process". Our Nigeria library explains how the NRBVN works.

What banks ask for varies. Examples from their own pages:

BankWhat its page lists for diaspora customers
GTBank (NRN Services)For Nigerians living outside Nigeria more than 180 days a year; NRN form and self-certification; ID such as NIN, Nigerian passport or notarised foreign passport; proof of foreign address such as a banker's confirmation or a notarised utility bill or stamped statement within 3 months; photo; BVN; references for current and domiciliary accounts
Access Bank (Diaspora)Current, savings and domiciliary accounts; ID, proof of residence, work ID or employment letter; NRBVN route for those without a BVN
Fidelity Bank (Diaspora Banking)Notarised or certified ID, proof of address under 3 months, two Nigerian bank references, a nominee resident joint signatory; NGN, USD, GBP and EUR accounts

Proof of your Canadian address is often the slowest part. See using a Canadian address for a Nigerian account for what tends to be accepted and how to get it certified in Canada.

Option 2: a naira wallet in a remittance app

Some apps used to send money from Canada also let you hold naira. LemFi says customers who signed up in the UK, US or Canada can add an NGN wallet to "receive money" in naira, and that people in Nigeria can fund it by bank transfer to dedicated account details (LemFi Help, October 2026). That suits receiving naira from family or tenants, but check in the app what you can do with the balance afterwards. More in receiving money with LemFi.

Option 3: a multicurrency account that includes naira

A multicurrency account that holds NGN next to US dollars and other currencies lets you keep naira, receive it from Nigerian bank accounts and convert when you choose, without running a separate Nigerian bank relationship from Canada. Check who holds the naira, whether it is deposit-insured in Nigeria and what the conversion costs are.

Whichever option you use, think about who pays you in naira. If a tenant in Ibadan pays rent, or a client in Lagos pays fees, giving them ordinary Nigerian account details is simpler for them than any foreign route, and you avoid a conversion they would otherwise pay for.

What to check before you choose

  1. Who holds the money. A Nigerian bank or microfinance bank licensed by the CBN, with NDIC insurance up to the applicable limit, or an app that holds your balance through a partner.
  2. How you get in. Internet banking that works from Canada, the authentication method, and whether a one-time code goes to a Nigerian phone number you no longer use.
  3. Dormancy rules. Some banks treat an account with no customer activity for a period as inactive or dormant. See keeping a Nigerian account active from Canada.
  4. Fees. Card maintenance, SMS alerts, tokens and transfer charges, as each bank's tariff shows.
  5. Canadian tax. If you are resident in Canada, interest earned on naira savings is part of your world income for Canadian tax, converted to Canadian dollars, and large foreign holdings may bring a reporting form. Check CRA guidance for your situation.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from Canada and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, with local account details for each, so someone in Nigeria can pay naira to your naira details by ordinary bank transfer. Naira balances are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. If you want to set naira aside for costs at home, Savings Boxes are available for naira, with rates shown in the app. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I open a Nigerian bank account from Canada without travelling home?

Often yes. Banks such as Access and GTBank describe remote opening through the NRBVN platform, with a liveness check and documents uploaded online.

What is the NRBVN?

A BVN for Nigerians abroad, issued through an online platform with a liveness check. Access Bank says it is issued within 72 hours of approval.

Do I need a Nigerian address to hold naira?

Not usually. Diaspora account packs ask for proof of your foreign address, often notarised or confirmed by your overseas bank.

Is naira in a Nigerian bank insured?

Deposits at CBN-licensed banks are insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Check the limit on the NDIC's site for your account type.
