Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can a small business hedge naira exposure? The options

Forwards, naira-settled futures and natural hedges explained for small firms with Nigerian costs or revenue, with what each needs and what it costs you.

The short answer

Yes, but the formal tools are narrow. Nigerian banks can offer FX forwards and naira-settled non-deliverable futures traded on FMDQ, which have generally had to be backed by a real trade or investment, and forwards were only 4.42% of FMDQ's FX turnover in one August 2026 week. For most small firms the practical hedge is natural: matching the currency of costs and revenue, timing conversions and writing exchange-rate clauses into contracts.

If your business earns in one currency and pays in another, every move in the naira changes your margin. Large companies hedge with derivatives. A small diaspora-owned business, with a Lagos office and customers in the UK or US, usually has fewer options, but not none. This guide sets out what exists, what the sources say about access, and the cheaper hedges that need no product at all.

First, measure what you are exposed to

Hedging starts with a number. List your naira inflows and outflows for the next three to six months by week, and do the same for foreign currencies. The difference is your net exposure. A business that sells in naira and imports in dollars is short dollars; a UK company paying Lagos salaries from pound revenue is short naira. Our guide to cash flow forecasting with a volatile naira shows how to build the schedule and test scenarios.

Formal hedging products

FX forwards

A forward fixes today the rate at which you will exchange a set amount on a future date. In Nigeria they are bank products. FMDQ's weekly turnover data, reported by Nairametrics on 16 August 2026, showed FX forwards of $90.89 million in the week ended 14 August 2026, up from about $25 million the week before, against spot turnover of $1.96 billion. Forwards were 4.42% of total turnover. Nairametrics read the small share as a sign that hedging instruments remain underdeveloped. The 2026 CBN FX Manual, as summarised by WTS Blackwoodstone on Mondaq in July 2026, requires authorised dealers to submit periodic returns on forward and swap transactions, which confirms banks deal in them but says nothing about minimum sizes for customers.

Naira-settled OTC FX futures (non-deliverable forwards)

Sefton Fross, writing on Mondaq in August 2020, described naira-settled OTC FX futures: the CBN offered the contracts to deposit money banks authorised to deal in FX, the banks sold them to customers, and trades ran on FMDQ's futures trading and reporting system. At maturity no dollars change hands; the losing side pays the other the naira difference between the contract rate and the reference rate on the day. Tenors were described as one to sixty months, with bespoke dates. Two conditions matter for small firms: contracts had to be backed by trade transactions or evidenced investments, and the article does not give fees or margin. Ask your bank whether the product is still offered in this form, because the source is from 2020.

What formal hedging needs from you

  • A corporate account with a bank that deals in the product.
  • Documents tying the hedge to a real underlying flow, such as an import invoice, a loan agreement or a Certificate of Capital Importation.
  • A credit line or collateral, since the bank takes your risk until maturity.
  • Someone in the business who will track the contract and its accounting.

Natural hedges a small business can use

For most small firms, the cheaper protection is operational.

  1. Match currencies. Pay foreign-currency costs from foreign-currency revenue and naira costs from naira revenue, so only the net amount is converted.
  2. Hold balances in the currency you will spend. If a dollar supplier invoice is due in 60 days, keeping dollars rather than naira removes that exposure.
  3. Convert in tranches. Converting a fixed share each week averages your rate rather than staking everything on one day.
  4. Write rate clauses into contracts. A clause that adjusts a naira price if the rate moves beyond an agreed band shares the risk with the customer. Our guide to FX clauses in retainers covers the drafting points.
  5. Shorten payment terms. The longer a naira receivable stays open, the more it can lose in foreign-currency terms.

The legal limit on pricing in dollars

A natural hedge cannot simply be "charge Nigerian customers in dollars". TheCable's summary of the 2026 FX Manual says the naira is the legal tender for transactions within Nigeria and that domestic deals between Nigerian entities are priced and settled in naira, with exemptions for certain government agencies, licensed oil and gas, maritime, aviation and free trade zone businesses. Templars, in a May 2025 note, explains that refusing naira is an offence under section 20(5) of the CBN Act and that its view is no statute criminalises pricing in foreign currency where naira is not refused. The rules have tightened since; take advice before pricing any domestic sale in foreign currency, and see pricing work for Nigerian clients when the naira moves.

Choosing an approach

SituationUsually sensible first step
Small, regular naira costs paid from foreign revenueConvert in weekly tranches; hold a naira buffer
One large dollar import due in monthsAsk your bank about a forward backed by the invoice
Long naira contract with a Nigerian clientRate-adjustment clause and shorter payment terms
Foreign loan to the Nigerian companyAsk about naira-settled futures backed by the loan and its CCI

This is information, not financial advice. Derivatives can lose money and carry credit and documentation risk; speak to your bank and adviser before entering one.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, which makes currency matching practical. Swap converts only when you choose, with the rate shown and the fee on its own line before you approve, so tranche conversions are easy to schedule. Forwards and futures remain bank products. The Finance agent can track your net exposure by currency for review.

Questions people ask

Can a small business buy a naira forward?

Banks deal in FX forwards and report them to the CBN, but access, minimum size and pricing are set by each bank. Expect to show the underlying trade or investment.

What is a naira non-deliverable forward?

A contract settled in naira for the difference between an agreed rate and the reference rate at maturity, with no dollars delivered. A 2020 Mondaq article described these as FMDQ-traded OTC FX futures sold through banks.

Can I charge Nigerian customers in dollars to avoid naira risk?

Generally not for domestic deals between Nigerian parties: the 2026 FX Manual, as reported, requires naira pricing and settlement, with sector exemptions. Take advice.

What is a natural hedge?

Matching the currency of costs and revenue so that only the net amount is ever converted.
