Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Hiring an accountant in Nigeria from abroad: what to check

What to check before hiring an accountant in Nigeria from abroad: ICAN or ANAN membership, FRC registration, the engagement letter, scope and fees.

The short answer

Check the accountant's professional membership (ICAN or ANAN) with the institute itself, and if they will audit or give assurance, confirm the firm and signing partner are on the Financial Reporting Council's register. Then agree a written engagement letter that sets the scope, deadlines, fees, who owns the records and how you will get access. Do not rely on a CV or a referral alone.

Hiring an accountant in Nigeria from abroad is one of the best investments a diaspora-owned business can make, and one of the easiest to get wrong. You are often choosing on a referral and a video call, and you may not discover a gap until a tax notice arrives. These are the checks that matter, in order.

Decide what you are hiring for

Different jobs need different people, and sometimes different firms:

WorkWho typically does itNotes
Bookkeeping and monthly reconciliationsBookkeeper or accounts officer, sometimes outsourcedMembership useful but not essential
Management accounts and tax filingsQualified accountant (ICAN or ANAN), often a firmTax practitioners may also hold CITN membership
Statutory auditAudit firm registered with the FRCMust be independent of whoever keeps your books
Advice on cross-border structureTax adviser, often a larger firmSeparate engagement

Whether you need an audit at all depends on the company. Under CAMA 2020, s.402 exempts a company from audit if it has not carried on business since incorporation or is a small company under s.394, which describes a private company with turnover of not more than ₦120,000,000 and net assets of not more than ₦60,000,000, no alien member, and directors holding at least 51% of the equity (or amounts the CAC sets). A company with a foreign shareholder is therefore not a small company under that test. Confirm the current position with the CAC or your adviser.

Check membership and registration

  • Professional body: ask for the membership number and confirm it with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) or the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) directly. A secondary summary of ICAN's rules (learnsignal, Oct 2026) gives a minimum of 40 CPD credit hours a year; ask whether they are up to date.
  • FRC register: from 1 April 2026, as reported by Leadership via AllAfrica (16 Feb 2026), the Financial Reporting Council requires audit firms and other assurance service providers to be on its National Audit and Assurance Firms Register, and says reporting entities must verify both the firm and the signing audit professional before appointment. Engagements by unregistered firms are treated as invalid.
  • Firm registration: the FRC's guidelines ask firms for their certificate of incorporation and the FRC numbers of their partners, so a genuine firm can give you both.

Put it in an engagement letter

An engagement letter is the contract. It should cover:

  1. Scope: exactly which returns, reports and filings are included, and which are extra.
  2. Deliverables and dates: monthly pack by a fixed working day, tax returns before their deadlines.
  3. Fees: fixed monthly fee or hourly, what triggers extra charges, and payment terms.
  4. Access: who holds logins for the tax portal, CAC portal and accounting software. They should be in the company's name with you as administrator.
  5. Records: that books and working papers belong to the company and are returned on request.
  6. Confidentiality and data: how staff and customer data is handled. See NDPA rules on moving staff data abroad.
  7. Liability and professional indemnity insurance.
  8. Termination: notice period and handover duties.

Questions to ask on the call

  • How many clients do you have with owners abroad, and how do you work with them?
  • Which software do you use, and can I have direct access?
  • Who will do the work: you, or a junior? Who reviews it?
  • How do you handle foreign currency accounts and exchange rates?
  • What happened the last time a client received a tax query?
  • Can I speak to two current clients?

Red flags

  • Reluctance to give a membership number, or a number the institute cannot find.
  • Offering to keep your books and also sign your audit.
  • Asking for tax payments to be sent to a personal account "to pay on your behalf". Tax should be paid from the company account to the tax authority, with a receipt in the company's name.
  • Holding the tax portal or CAC login in their own name and declining to share administrator access.
  • No written engagement letter, or one that does not mention deadlines.

Keep control of the essentials

Even with a good accountant, keep these in your own hands: the tax portal and CAC logins, bank statement access, and approval of anything that changes reported profit. Our guides on company tax filings when the owner lives abroad and preparing for a Nigerian audit cover what the accountant will need from you.

Where Pryme fits

Your accountant will work faster with clean data. A Pryme Business Account keeps naira and foreign currency balances together (business multicurrency) and its Finance agent prepares reconciliations and remittance lists for the accountant to review; a person approves above the ceiling you set.

Questions people ask

How do I verify a Nigerian accountant is qualified?

Ask for their ICAN or ANAN membership number and confirm it with the institute directly. For audit work, also check that the firm and signing partner are on the Financial Reporting Council's register.

Does my Nigerian company need an audit?

CAMA 2020 s.402 exempts small companies under s.394 and companies that have not traded. The s.394 test excludes companies with alien members, so a company with a foreign shareholder usually needs one. Confirm with the CAC or your adviser.

Can the same accountant keep my books and audit them?

No. The auditor should be independent of whoever prepares the accounts.

Who should own the tax portal login?

The company. Keep the login in the company's name with you as administrator, and give the accountant access you can withdraw.
