Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

What happens when a Canadian app is down on transfer day

How to tell a remittance app outage from a hold on your transfer, what happens to money already sent, and what to do when a Nigeria payment is urgent.

The short answer

If your Canadian remittance app is down, a transfer you have not yet confirmed simply has not happened, and one already confirmed usually stays in the provider's queue and completes when systems recover. A hold is different: your own transfer is paused for review, often with a request for information. Check which you have before acting, never send the same payment twice through a second route without checking the first, and use a regulated alternative only for what is truly urgent.

Outage or hold: how to tell

SignLikely outageLikely hold on your transfer
App will not load or log inYesNo
Others report the same problemYesNo
Your transfer shows as pending or under reviewPossiblyYes
Email or in-app request for documentsNoYes
Money taken from your account, status unchangedPossiblyPossibly

Providers say both happen. Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page says delivery times can vary with "transaction review, and system availability". Western Union's UK tracking FAQ shows how statuses are labelled, including "On hold" while a transfer is being verified, and says status is usually updated within two hours. Canadian versions of these services use their own labels, so read the status text in your app.

What happens to money already sent

  • Not yet confirmed: nothing has left your account for this transfer. Wait, or use another route.
  • Confirmed, funding pulled: the transfer is in the provider's system. It usually completes when systems recover or is refunded if it cannot.
  • Paid to the Nigerian bank: if the delay is on the Nigerian side, the provider's status may say sent while the receiver sees nothing yet. See when the app says delivered but nothing arrives.

Remitly's page also says that transfers will be delivered on time or it will refund your fees. That covers fees, not the exchange rate. Other providers set their own terms.

The biggest risk: paying twice

When an app stalls, the reflex is to send the same money another way. If the first transfer then completes, the receiver gets two payments, and getting the second back is hard. LemFi's help centre, for example, says completed transfers generally cannot be recalled and that a recall needs the receiving bank's approval and the funds still in the account. Before you resend, check that the first transfer has been cancelled or refunded, or accept that you may be sending twice.

If the payment is truly urgent

  1. Confirm the deadline with the receiver: a hospital deposit is urgent; a monthly allowance can usually wait a day.
  2. Check your app's status in its help centre or official social accounts, not in replies from strangers.
  3. If you must use another route, pick a provider registered with FINTRAC as a money services business; FINTRAC says MSBs must register before they operate. See checking the MSB registry.
  4. Consider your bank's wire for a large payment, accepting that it may take longer and usually travels in US dollars.
  5. Send only the urgent part through the second route and leave the rest for when the first app recovers.

Fake support during outages

Outages bring out impostors who reply to public complaints offering to "fix" a stuck transfer. Real support works through the app or the provider's own website. Never give a one-time code, password or card PIN to anyone who contacts you first.

Example

Example: on Friday evening your app fails while you are sending CAD 600 for your father's prescription in Ibadan. The app shows the transfer as pending and CAD 600 has left your bank. You do not resend. You tell your sister in Lagos to cover the pharmacy, and on Saturday the transfer completes. Had you sent CAD 600 again through another service, your father would have received two payments, and the second would have had to be sent back by a new transfer.

Planning for the next time

Outages are rare but tend to arrive on the worst day: payday, the end of the month, or just before a holiday in Nigeria. A few habits remove most of the stress.

  • Send regular payments a few days before they are needed, not on the due date.
  • Keep a second registered provider set up and verified, so you are not doing ID checks in a hurry.
  • Keep a small buffer with a trusted relative in Nigeria for emergencies such as medicine or a hospital deposit.
  • Save every receiver's details exactly, so a second provider can be used without retyping names.
  • Turn on the app's notifications, so you hear about holds as soon as they happen.

If a transfer stays stuck for more than a couple of days, follow the steps in delayed Canada-Nigeria transfers.

Where Pryme fits

Keeping a second, separate way to pay is sensible for anyone supporting family. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details, and when you send the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. A naira balance already held in Nigeria can be paid out locally when needed. Our security page explains how Pryme protects sign-in with an authenticator app rather than SMS codes.

Questions people ask

My remittance app is down and money has left my account. Is it lost?

Usually not. A confirmed transfer stays in the provider's system and completes when it recovers, or is refunded if it cannot. Check the status before taking any other step.

Should I send the money again another way?

Only after checking that the first transfer has been cancelled or refunded. Otherwise the receiver may get the money twice and the second payment is hard to recover.

How do I know if my transfer is on hold rather than the app being down?

A hold affects your transfer only and usually comes with a status such as under review or a request for information. An outage affects logging in or the whole app.

Who do I complain to if a Canadian app loses my transfer?

Start with the provider's own complaints process and keep every reference. For a bank, OBSI can review a complaint after 56 days without a final response.
