Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Halal certification for Nigerian food exports

Which bodies certify Nigerian food as halal, when a buyer or retailer abroad needs it, and how to check that a certificate will be accepted.

The short answer

Halal certification of Nigerian food is done by private certification bodies, not by a government agency. A Turkish government accreditation agency lists the Halal Certification Authority (HCA), certifying since 2016, as the most important body in Nigeria. Whether you need it depends on the buyer and market: importers in Gulf and Asian markets often require halal certification, and some countries have labelling rules. Canada, for example, requires the certifying body's name wherever a halal claim is made.

For a diaspora importer selling to Muslim customers in London, Dubai or Toronto, a halal logo can decide whether a supermarket lists the product. For a Nigerian producer, it can open buyers in the Gulf and South-East Asia. The difficulty is that "halal certified" means very different things depending on who certified it and which market is looking.

Who certifies halal in Nigeria

There is no single statutory halal certifier in Nigeria. The Halal Accreditation Agency of Türkiye (HAK), in its country page on Nigeria, says the country has not yet developed official halal regulations, and that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria has adopted no halal standard. It names:

  • Halal Certification Authority (HCA), which began certifying in 2016. HAK describes it as the most important institution in the field and says it has a memorandum of understanding with SON and NAFDAC and publishes its process and certified companies.
  • Halal Compliance and Food Safety Limited (HaCFoS), which provides consultancy, training and product content analysis.
  • SON and NAFDAC, which HAK says have studied halal work with the certification bodies. Their own approvals are still required for the product, whether or not it is halal.

The HAK page appears to date from around 2020, so newer bodies exist. In September 2026, Peoples Gazette (via NAN) reported that women and small businesses in Niger State had obtained halal certification through Dar Al Halal Certification Limited, Abuja, for products such as gari, rice, kuli kuli and cooking oil aimed at markets including Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. The article does not say the certification was mandatory. It quotes Dar Al Halal's chairman saying that without it, "products may not be accepted in foreign markets".

When you need it

  • Buyer requirement. Most often the need is commercial. A retailer, distributor or food service buyer in the destination asks for it. Ask which certifiers they accept before you choose one.
  • Destination rules. Some importing countries regulate halal claims or recognise only certain foreign certifiers. Check the official authority in that market, not only the certifier's claims.
  • Label claims. If you print "halal", the claim must be true and may have its own rules. Canada's CFIA labelling tool says the Food and Drug Regulations prohibit a halal claim unless the name of the certifying person or body is shown on the label, package or advertisement where the claim appears, in full. Acronyms or logos alone may not be recognised.
  • Ingredient risk. Processed foods containing oils, flavourings, emulsifiers or gelatine raise more questions about sources than single plant products, so expect more scrutiny of those lines.

How certification usually works

  1. Application listing products, recipes and every ingredient supplier.
  2. Review of ingredient sources, especially animal-derived ingredients, alcohol-based flavourings and processing aids.
  3. Factory audit covering cleaning, separation from non-halal production, storage and staff training.
  4. Certificate issued for named products and sites, usually with a validity period and annual surveillance.
  5. Use of the certifier's logo under licence, only on the products listed.

Checking a certificate before you buy

  • Certifier's full legal name and contact details.
  • Company name and factory address matching your supplier and the NAFDAC registration.
  • Product list matching what you are buying, including pack sizes or brands.
  • Issue and expiry dates.
  • Confirmation from the certifier, by email or its published list, that the certificate is current.

Halal certification sits alongside, not instead of, the NAFDAC export and labelling requirements (see NAFDAC export permits and labelling Nigerian food for sale abroad). This is information, not religious or legal guidance.

The importer's side

If you import and resell, the halal claim on the shelf becomes partly your responsibility. Keep a copy of the current certificate for every batch you buy, note its expiry date in your stock records, and ask the supplier to tell you in writing before any change of recipe, ingredient supplier or factory, since any of those can take a product outside the certificate. If you repack or relabel in your own country, the repacking site may need its own certification for the claim to carry over. Ask your buyer or the certifier.

Costs are set by each certifier and depend on the number of products, sites and audit days, so get written quotes. The Peoples Gazette report notes that the Niger State group obtained its certification at a discounted rate through an organised programme. Producer associations and export groups are worth asking about before a single small firm pays full price alone.

Where Pryme fits

Certification fees and audit costs are usually paid in naira. A Pryme Business Account lets you hold NGN from abroad and pay directly, and a verifiable receipt from VerifyDoc.ai gives your buyer a document it can check.

Questions people ask

Who issues halal certificates in Nigeria?

Private certification bodies. The Halal Accreditation Agency of Türkiye names the Halal Certification Authority (HCA), certifying since 2016, as the leading body. Others include Dar Al Halal Certification Limited in Abuja.

Is halal certification compulsory for Nigerian food exports?

Not under Nigerian law as described by our sources. It is usually a buyer or destination-market requirement, so check with your importer and the destination authority.

Does NAFDAC issue halal certificates?

Our sources describe NAFDAC and SON as working with the certification bodies, not as halal certifiers. Their own product approvals are still required.

Can I just print a halal logo on my product?

No. The claim must be backed by certification, and some markets regulate it. Canada requires the certifier's full name wherever a halal claim is made.
