Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying naira in Lagos to get CAD in Canada: the risks

The informal swap looks simple: naira to an account in Lagos, Canadian dollars by e-Transfer. Here are the legal, fraud and banking risks on both ends.

The short answer

An informal swap, where you pay naira into an account in Lagos and someone sends you Canadian dollars in Canada, carries three real risks: the person may be running an unregistered money services business (FINTRAC says FX dealing and remitting must be registered before operating), the Canadian dollars may come from someone else's stolen or laundered funds, and your bank may question or freeze an unexplained deposit. If it goes wrong, you have no regulator to complain to.

How the swap usually works

Someone in a WhatsApp group or church network offers a rate. You pay naira into an account in Nigeria, often not in the dealer's own name, and an Interac e-Transfer or cash arrives in Canada from a person you have never met. No money crosses a border; two local payments are matched. That is exactly why it is attractive, and why the risks sit where they do.

FINTRAC treats dealing in foreign exchange and remitting or transmitting funds as money services business activities. Its guidance (modified 1 October 2025) says an MSB must register with FINTRAC before it begins to operate, that registration is free, and that provincial licensing does not replace it. A registered MSB also has to run a compliance programme: a compliance officer, written policies, a risk assessment and training.

A person matching naira payments in Lagos with Canadian-dollar transfers in Toronto for a margin is doing FX dealing and remitting in substance. If they are not registered, you are dealing with an unregulated business. You are the customer, not the operator, but you lose every protection a regulated channel gives you: identity checks on the other side, records, and someone to complain to.

Nigeria's rules point the other way too. The CBN's circular of 24 March 2026, summarised by Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, requires licensed money transfer operators to route remittances through naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks and says no remittance proceeds may flow outside that structure. Under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, as summarised on Mondaq, transfers to or from abroad above US$10,000 must be reported, and cash transactions above ₦5 million for individuals must go through financial institutions. An informal swap is designed to sit outside all of this.

The fraud risks

  • Non-delivery. You pay naira and nothing arrives. There is no reversal for a voluntary bank transfer to a stranger.
  • Third-party money. The Canadian-dollar transfer comes from someone else's account. If that money came from a scam victim, the victim's bank may claw it back and your account is now linked to the fraud.
  • Becoming the mule. If you start doing swaps for friends, you are moving other people's money through your account, which is the pattern fraud teams look for.
  • Bait rates. A rate well above what regulated channels offer is the hook. The better the rate, the more questions to ask.

How your Canadian bank may react

Banks in Canada have their own obligations to know where money comes from. A run of e-Transfers from unrelated people, or a large deposit you cannot explain, is likely to prompt questions. Your bank may ask for evidence, delay funds, or under its account terms restrict or close the account. Later, a mortgage lender looking at your statements will ask the same questions; see showing a lender money from Nigeria.

What you have after a regulated transferWhat you have after a swap
A receipt naming sender, amount, rate and feeA WhatsApp chat and screenshots
A transfer traceable from your own Nigerian accountA deposit from a stranger's Canadian account
A licensed firm you can complain toNobody

Carrying cash instead

Carrying cash is legal but must be declared. The CBSA's memorandum D19-14-1 says currency or monetary instruments of C$10,000 or more must be reported when entering or leaving Canada, and unreported currency may be seized. Nigeria's 2022 Act, as summarised on Mondaq, also requires cash over US$10,000 carried in or out to be declared to Customs. See declaring cash arriving from Lagos.

What to do instead

  1. Move your own money from your own Nigerian account to your own Canadian account, so the trail is unbroken.
  2. Use a bank, or a firm that is registered where it operates; you can check FINTRAC's MSB registry.
  3. Keep every receipt and statement for the transfer.
  4. Compare the total cost, not only the rate, of two or three regulated options on the same day.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one place, opened from any country. Converting with Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and you can produce a verifiable statement if a bank asks.

Questions people ask

Is it illegal to swap naira for Canadian dollars with someone?

Canada requires anyone dealing in foreign exchange or remitting funds as a business to register with FINTRAC before operating. The dealer, not you, is the operator, but you have no protection if they are unregistered. This is information, not legal advice.

Can my Canadian bank freeze my account over e-Transfers from strangers?

Banks can ask about unexplained deposits and, under their account terms, delay funds or restrict an account. Repeated transfers from unrelated people are a common trigger.

What happens if the person never sends the CAD?

A voluntary transfer to a stranger is hard to reverse, and an unregistered dealer has no regulator. Report it to your bank and the police, but recovery is unlikely.

How much cash can I bring from Lagos to Canada?

There is no limit, but the CBSA requires you to report C$10,000 or more, and Nigeria requires cash over US$10,000 to be declared on departure.
