Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Governor's consent in Lagos for a UK-based buyer

Why consent is the step that makes a Lagos purchase stick, how it is applied for through e-GIS, what drives the cost and how long it takes.

The short answer

Governor's consent is the Lagos State approval that turns your deed of assignment into a valid transfer. The Land Use Act s.22 says a statutory right of occupancy cannot be assigned without it, and s.26 makes a transaction against the Act void. A UK-based buyer applies through a Lagos lawyer, usually via the state's e-GIS portal, after stamping the deed. The Lands Bureau advertises a 30-day consent target; the fees are assessed on your transaction, so ask for the assessment in writing.

Many diaspora buyers stop once the deed is signed and the money has gone. The land then sits in a legal half-way house: you have paid, but the state has not recognised the transfer. If the seller dies, sells again or borrows against the land, your position is weak. Consent closes that gap.

The Land Use Act gives the Governor control of land in each state. Section 22(1) says the holder of a statutory right of occupancy may not alienate it by assignment, mortgage, transfer of possession, sublease or otherwise without the Governor's consent first obtained. Section 26 says any transaction contrary to the Act is null and void. Courts have applied these rules in many ways over the years, but the safe reading for a buyer is simple: get consent.

The process

  1. Clean searches. Title search and charting before you sign; see checking a Lagos C of O.
  2. Execute the deed. Sign the deed of assignment before a UK notary, or let your attorney sign in Lagos.
  3. Stamp it. The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 requires stamping within 30 days of execution, per Odubunmi's review. Duty on an irrevocable assignment on sale is 1.5%, paid by the buyer.
  4. Apply for consent. Your lawyer lodges the application. TheCable reports the Lagos e-GIS portal, launched in January 2024, lets users apply for Governor's consent, pay fees and track applications online.
  5. Pay the assessed charges through the channels the Bureau names. The Lands Bureau site says payment is by direct payment to designated banks.
  6. Collect and register. The consented deed is registered. Legal500 notes registrable instruments must be registered within 60 days.

What it costs

The Lands Bureau's site says consent fees, capital gains tax, stamp duty and registration fees were reduced under its reforms, but it does not publish amounts. In practice the Bureau assesses the charges on your transaction and issues a demand. Ask your lawyer for that assessment, in writing, before you commit to a price, and treat any figure quoted from memory or by an agent as unconfirmed.

Budget example

Item (example ₦50,000,000 purchase)BasisAmount
Stamp duty1.5% of consideration (NTA 2025, per Odubunmi)₦750,000
Consent and registration chargesAssessed by Lands BureauGet written assessment
Capital gains tax (seller's cost unless agreed otherwise)AssessedAgree who pays in the contract
Lawyer's feeAgreed with your lawyerQuote in writing

The stamp duty line is arithmetic: ₦50,000,000 x 1.5% = ₦750,000. The rest depends on the assessment, which is why the contract should say who pays each charge.

How long it takes

The Lands Bureau lists "The 30 Days Governor's Consent" among its reforms. Treat 30 days as a target from a complete application, not a promise. Missing documents, a defect in the seller's chain or a query on the survey plan will add time. From the UK, ask your lawyer for the application reference so you can follow it on the portal.

Doing it without travelling

You can sign the deed and any consent forms before a UK notary and send them, or appoint an attorney. If a Lagos office needs a document authenticated, the FCDO apostille service is set out on GOV.UK; see a power of attorney for Nigerian land drafted in the UK. For a general explainer that applies across states, see Governor's consent when buying from abroad.

Buyers skip consent to save money or because the seller says it is not needed. The risks are concrete. Under s.26 of the Land Use Act, a transaction contrary to the Act is void, so a seller or the seller's heirs may later argue that title never passed. You may struggle to sell, mortgage or lease the land, since a later buyer's lawyer will ask for the consented deed. And if the seller has sold to someone else who obtained consent first, you start a dispute from a weak position.

What your lawyer will ask you for

  • Your passport data page and current photographs.
  • The signed and stamped deed of assignment, and proof that stamp duty was paid.
  • Evidence that you paid the price, such as bank transfer confirmations.
  • Any power of attorney under which someone signs for you.
  • Your contact details for the application, including an email address you check.

The Bureau may ask for more for your case, such as the seller's tax documents. Ask your lawyer for the complete list at the start, so documents from the UK travel once, not three times.

Where Pryme fits

Consent charges are paid in naira, often after a wait. Holding naira in a Pryme account means you can pay the assessment when it arrives with Send, having converted from pounds with Swap at a time you chose. Naira is held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank.

Questions people ask

Is Governor's consent necessary when buying land in Lagos?

Yes for assigning a statutory right of occupancy. The Land Use Act s.22 requires prior consent and s.26 makes contrary transactions void.

How long does Governor's consent take in Lagos?

The Lands Bureau advertises a 30-day target. Complete documents and a clean title are needed to come close to it.

How much is Governor's consent in Lagos?

The Lands Bureau does not publish the amounts on its site; charges are assessed on the transaction. Get the written assessment through your lawyer.

Can I apply for Governor's consent online?

TheCable reports the Lagos e-GIS portal allows consent applications, payments and tracking online. Your lawyer normally files it.
