Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Sending wedding gift money to Nigeria from the UK

Can't make the wedding? How to send gift money from the UK on time, what the CBN Act says about spraying naira, and why buying new notes is risky.

The short answer

The simplest way is a transfer to the couple's own account, or to a trusted relative, sent a few days before the event so it is credited in time. If you want someone to spray naira for you, note that section 21 of the CBN Act 2007 treats spraying, dancing or "matching" on naira notes at social occasions as abuse of the currency, and also makes hawking or selling naira notes an offence.

When you cannot be there

Missing a wedding at home is one of the harder parts of living abroad, and sending a gift is how many Nigerians in the UK still take part. The choice is mainly about who receives the money and how early you send it.

Option 1: a transfer to the couple

If the couple have shared an account for gifts, or you know one of their accounts, a transfer is the cleanest gift: it arrives with your name on it, and no one has to handle cash for you.

  • Get the exact account name and 10-digit number from the couple or a close family member, not from a forwarded message.
  • Add a reference such as your name and "wedding gift", so the couple know who sent it.
  • Send early. Speeds differ by route: Monzo says most of its naira payments arrive within seconds; Barclays says most international payments take one to two working days; Lloyds allows up to five working days for countries outside its listed regions.

Option 2: through a relative who attends

Some guests prefer a relative to present the gift in person, or to spray on their behalf. Send to the relative a few days before, agree exactly how much is for the couple, and ask for confirmation once it is handed over.

What the law says about spraying naira

Spraying money on the couple is a familiar part of many Nigerian celebrations. The Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 addresses it directly:

Section 21(1)
Tampering with a naira note or coin is an offence punishable by imprisonment of not less than six months, or a fine of not less than ₦50,000, or both.
Section 21(3)
Spraying of, dancing or "matching" on the naira at social occasions "shall constitute an abuse and defacing" of the note and is punishable under section 21(1).
Section 21(4)
Hawking, selling or otherwise trading in naira notes or coins is an offence punishable under the same section.
Section 21(5)
"Spraying" includes adorning or sprinkling a person with naira notes; "matching" includes spreading notes on a surface and stepping on them.

This is information, not legal advice, and how strictly the rule is enforced at a particular event is not something we can confirm. But it does mean that asking a relative to spray on your behalf puts them, not you, in the position the Act describes. A transfer to the couple, or cash presented in an envelope, avoids the question.

Timing and the "new notes" problem

Guests often want crisp new notes for an event. Buying them from vendors near banks or at the venue is what section 21(4) covers: trading in naira notes is an offence under the Act. If your relative needs cash, the lawful route is to withdraw it from their own bank account, which takes planning because withdrawals are subject to CBN limits; see CBN cash withdrawal limits. Send the money to them early enough to withdraw over more than one day if needed.

Worked example

Example only. Amaka, in Leeds, wants ₦200,000 to reach the couple for a Saturday wedding in Owerri. She sends a naira transfer to the bride's account on the Tuesday before, using an app that shows the naira amount upfront, with the reference "Amaka, wedding gift". If she used a SWIFT bank payment instead, she would send it the week before, to allow for the one to five working days banks quote. If she used Revolut and converted on Saturday morning, a weekend exchange fee of 1% (Standard plan) would add about 1% to the pounds needed, so converting on a weekday makes more sense.

If you are sending to several people

Some guests in the UK split a gift: part to the couple, part to the bride's mother for the ceremony, part to a sibling handling aso-ebi. Send each part separately with a clear reference, rather than one lump sum for someone to divide, so each person knows what was meant for them and you have a separate record of each.

What to check first

  • Who should receive the money: the couple, a parent, or a relative attending.
  • The account name, confirmed by voice or video with someone you know, so that a changed account number in a forwarded message cannot redirect your gift.
  • The latest day the money must land, then work back from your route's quoted timing.
  • A record: keep the transfer confirmation in case the couple ask.

Planning the wider costs from abroad? See budgeting for a traditional wedding from abroad and paying wedding vendor deposits from abroad.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from the UK holds pounds and naira with local details for each, so you can convert ahead of wedding season and send gifts from the naira side when the date comes; the app shows the rate and fee before you approve. A verifiable receipt shows the couple exactly what was sent. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Is spraying money at a Nigerian wedding illegal?

Section 21(3) of the CBN Act 2007 treats spraying, dancing or matching on naira notes at social occasions as abuse of the naira, punishable under section 21(1).

What is the penalty for spraying naira?

Section 21(1) sets imprisonment of not less than six months, a fine of not less than ₦50,000, or both.

Can I buy new naira notes for a wedding?

Buying from vendors is risky: section 21(4) makes hawking, selling or trading in naira notes an offence. Withdraw from a bank account instead.

How early should I send wedding money to Nigeria from the UK?

Allow for your route's quoted timing: some app routes arrive within minutes, while UK banks quote one to five working days for SWIFT payments.
