Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Freelance rates in USD vs naira budgets: pricing for Nigeria

How a US-based freelancer can price work for Nigerian clients whose budgets are in naira, without underselling or losing the deal to currency swings.

The short answer

Price from your own floor in dollars, then decide who carries the currency risk: quote in USD and the client carries it, quote in naira and you do. Nigerian clients budget in naira, and the CBN's 2026 FX Manual generally expects Nigerian entities to price and settle in naira, so common middle paths are a naira quote with a review date, a dollar quote converted at an agreed rate on invoice day, or smaller milestone payments.

A Lagos startup can be a great client: interesting work, fast decisions, loyal teams. It is also usually budgeting in naira, against a currency that has moved a long way in a few years and inflation that, according to the NBS figure reported by Voice of Nigeria, stood at 14.63% in September 2026. A US freelancer's rent is in dollars. Pricing for Nigeria means reconciling those two facts openly.

Start from your floor, in dollars

Before any conversation about naira, know the lowest dollar figure that makes the work worth doing. Include:

  • Your target hourly or day rate after self-employment tax, which the IRS puts at 15.3% on net earnings.
  • Nigerian withholding tax. PwC's summary of the 2024 regulations lists 10% for non-residents on professional and consultancy fees, so a $2,000 fee may arrive as $1,800 unless you price gross-up.
  • Payment costs: international wire charges, conversion margin, and the time money spends in transit.
  • Collection risk: a deposit lowers it; long payment terms raise it.

Three ways to quote

ApproachWho carries currency riskWorks best for
Quote and invoice in USDClientClients with dollar revenue or a dom account; short projects
Quote and invoice in nairaYouClients with naira-only budgets; you have naira costs in Nigeria
Quote in USD, invoice in naira at an agreed rate on invoice dateShared: rate fixed on a known dayRetainers and milestone work

The CBN's 2026 FX Manual, as reported by TheCable, says Nigerian entities should price and settle in naira, with sector exemptions. Paying a foreign supplier for services is not the same as a local sale, but many Nigerian finance teams now prefer naira contracts. Ask the client what its bank will accept before you insist on dollars.

Fixing the rate fairly

If you invoice in naira against a dollar price, name the rate source in the contract. The CBN publishes official exchange rate data, including monthly averages, on its rates page. Agree which rate, which day (invoice date, or the business day before), and a rounding rule. Never write a rate into the contract as a permanent number: rates move daily.

Worked example (illustration only)

Your price
$3,000 a month retainer, gross
Contract clause
Invoiced in naira at the CBN official rate published for the business day before the invoice date
Month 1 (example rate ₦1,400 per $)
Invoice ₦4,200,000
Month 2 (example rate ₦1,450 per $)
Invoice ₦4,350,000
Review
Every three months both sides can reopen the dollar figure
Withholding
Client deducts 10% and gives you the receipt; your income is the gross invoice

The example rates are illustrative, not today's rate. Check the current figure on the CBN rates page or in your banking app on the day.

Ways to fit a naira budget without cutting your rate

  1. Reduce scope rather than price: deliver a smaller first phase.
  2. Split into milestones, each paid before the next starts.
  3. Offer a smaller monthly retainer for a fixed number of hours.
  4. Ask for a deposit, which protects you against both non-payment and currency moves in the meantime.
  5. Price support or maintenance separately, so the build fee stays honest.

If you are paid in naira and have naira costs, such as family upkeep or a building project, holding naira can work; you skip a double conversion. If your costs are in dollars, plan when you convert. Our Nigeria library covers the local view in should Nigerian freelancers price in dollars or naira.

What to put in the contract

  • Currency of invoice and of payment, and any conversion rule.
  • Whether fees are gross of Nigerian withholding tax.
  • Who pays bank charges.
  • Deposit and milestone schedule, and late-payment terms.
  • A review date for the rate.

More on drafting: contract points for Nigerian clients.

When a client asks for a discount

Nigerian clients sometimes ask for a 'Nigerian rate'. That can be a fair request when the work is smaller in scope or the client is early-stage, but treat it as a scope conversation rather than a rate cut. Ask what budget the client has in naira, convert it at today's rate, and show what that buys: fewer revisions, a shorter phase, or a longer timeline. A lower headline rate for the same work tends to stick, and later clients will ask for it too.

Inflation also argues for review dates. With prices in Nigeria rising, a client's naira budget for next year is likely to be larger than this year's, and a quote that names a review date gives both sides a natural moment to reset it.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds naira and dollars with local details for each, so you can invoice a Lagos client in naira, receive it by local transfer, and decide later whether to convert. Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and invoicing keeps each naira invoice tied to its dollar price.

Questions people ask

Should I charge Nigerian clients in dollars or naira?

It depends on who should carry currency risk. Dollars put it on the client; naira put it on you; a dollar price invoiced in naira at an agreed rate shares it.

Can a Nigerian company pay me in dollars?

Yes, if it has dollars, often from a domiciliary account. The CBN's 2026 manual generally expects Nigerian entities to price and settle in naira, so ask what its bank will accept.

Which exchange rate should my contract use?

Name a published source, such as the CBN's official rate, a fixed day and a rounding rule. Do not write a fixed number.

Do I lose 10% to Nigerian tax?

Often the client deducts withholding tax, listed at 10% for non-residents on professional fees in PwC's summary. Price gross and ask for the receipt.
