Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Can family in Nigeria send me dollars in the US?

What Nigerian FX rules allow when family send dollars to you in the US: domiciliary transfers, school fees, PTA, and what the US side asks.

The short answer

Yes, in most cases. Under the CBN FX Manual in force from 1 June 2026, a relative who holds dollars in a self-funded domiciliary account can send a telegraphic transfer of up to US$10,000 a day without Form A. Buying new dollars from a bank is limited to set purposes, such as school fees paid to the institution, with documents. Gifts above US$100,000 in a year from a non-US person are reported by you on IRS Form 3520.

When a parent in Ibadan wants to help with rent in Chicago, or a brother in Abuja wants to cover a deposit on a car in Atlanta, the question is less whether it is allowed and more which door the dollars come through. Nigerian rules treat dollars a person already holds very differently from dollars a person wants to buy with naira. The 2026 FX Manual, which replaced the 2018 edition, sharpened that line.

Route one: dollars already in a domiciliary account

If your relative already has dollars in a domiciliary (dom) account in Nigeria, this is the simplest route. According to Mondaq's summary of the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 (Pavestones, 24 June 2026), the Manual removes the Form A requirement for outward remittances by holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts and lets them make direct telegraphic transfers of up to US$10,000 a day. TheNigeriaLawyer's report describes ordinary dom holders as having unrestricted access to their balances for eligible transactions.

In practice your relative fills in the bank's transfer instruction with your US bank's name, SWIFT or routing details, your account number and your name exactly as on the account. The bank may still ask about the purpose and where the dollars came from, as part of its own checks. For the mechanics, see wiring from a Nigerian dom account to a US bank.

Route two: buying dollars for a listed purpose

A relative who only has naira cannot simply buy dollars to gift you. Nigerian banks sell foreign exchange to individuals for defined purposes, each with documents, usually through Form A. The purposes that matter most to families with someone in the US:

PurposeLimit reported for the 2026 ManualPaid toSource
TuitionUp to US$25,000 per semester, two semesters per academic yearThe institution directlyTheCable; Nairametrics
Student maintenanceUp to US$5,000 per quarterThe studentTheCable; Nairametrics
Personal Travel Allowance (PTA)Up to US$4,000 per quarter, travellers aged 18 and over; at least 75% by card or digital channelThe travellerTheCable

Nairametrics lists the tuition documents as proof of admission or enrolment, the fee schedule, the student's passport data page, a student ID for returning students and a first degree certificate for postgraduate study. Nursery, primary, secondary, foundation and A-level fees are not eligible.

PTA is for the person travelling, so it is not a way to send a gift to someone else. If your mother is visiting you in Houston, it covers her spending on the trip, mostly on a card.

Route three: a remittance app, in reverse

Most apps that Nigerians use to send money home move money into Nigeria, not out of it. Outbound services exist but differ by provider, route and date. Before your relative uses one, check that it states clearly on its own pages that it sends from Nigeria to the US, shows the rate and fee before payment, and pays into a US bank account. Be wary of any arrangement where your relative pays naira to an individual who then sends you dollars: see the risks of informal swaps.

What the US side asks

  • Your bank keeps records of incoming funds transfers of US$3,000 or more, including the sender's details passed along with the payment, under the FFIEC funds-transfer rules.
  • A gift is not income to you, but if gifts from a nonresident alien individual (counting related people together) exceed US$100,000 in a tax year, you report them on Form 3520. The IRS instructions set a penalty of 5% of the gift per month late, up to 25%, unless there is reasonable cause.
  • Keep a short note from the sender saying the money is a gift, with the sender's name and relationship. It answers your bank's questions quickly.

See Form 3520 and gifts from family in Nigeria for the reporting detail.

Example: counting gifts
In one tax year your mother sends US$40,000 and your father sends US$70,000, both as gifts. Each is under US$100,000, but the IRS instructions count related foreign persons together, so the total of US$110,000 passes the threshold and both gifts go on Form 3520.

What to check first

  1. Does the sender already hold dollars in a dom account, or only naira?
  2. If naira only, is the purpose one the bank can sell dollars for, with documents?
  3. Are your US account name and wire details exactly right?
  4. Will the total from that family member pass US$100,000 this year?

Where Pryme fits

Family can pay into a Pryme account that holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with separate account details, and you decide when to convert with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. See multicurrency.

Questions people ask

Can my parents send me dollars from Nigeria?

Yes, if they hold dollars in a self-funded domiciliary account; the 2026 Manual allows transfers of up to US$10,000 a day without Form A, per Mondaq. Buying new dollars is limited to listed purposes.

Can family use PTA to send me money?

No. PTA is for the traveller's own trip, up to US$4,000 a quarter, mostly by card.

Can school fees be paid from Nigeria to a US university?

Yes. Up to US$25,000 per semester can go directly to the institution through a bank with Form A and admission documents.

Do I pay US tax on money my family sends?

A gift is not income, but gifts over US$100,000 a year from a nonresident alien must be reported on Form 3520.
