Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Shipping a used car from South Africa to Nigeria: the rules

Nigeria only accepts vehicles under 15 years old, and South African cars are right-hand drive. The checks to make before shipping a car from Durban.

The short answer

Nigeria only allows imported vehicles that are less than 15 years from their year of manufacture, and duty depends on the vehicle type, engine capacity and year, according to the Nigeria Trade Information Portal. South African cars are right-hand drive while Nigeria drives on the right, so confirm a right-hand-drive car can be registered in Nigeria before you buy or ship one.

Nigerians in South Africa sometimes plan to ship a car home when they return, or to send vehicles to family or to a dealer in Lagos. The car market in South Africa is attractive, but a vehicle that suits South African roads may not be allowed onto Nigerian ones. Check the Nigerian rules first, then the South African export steps, then the cost.

The Nigerian rules that decide everything

Age
Only vehicles less than 15 years from the year of manufacture, per the Nigeria Trade Information Portal (NTIP).
Form M
The NTIP says a Form M is mandatory for vehicle imports above $10,000. Sterling Bank's Form M guide says Form M is required for imports of any value, so assume you need one.
Documents
Form M, proforma invoice, bill of lading, CCVO (Combined Certificate of Value and Origin), packing list, insurance certificate, and a product certificate where required.
Duty
Varies by vehicle type, engine capacity and year; duties, VAT and levies are paid at clearance.

Right-hand drive

South Africa drives on the left and its cars are right-hand drive; Nigeria drives on the right. Nigerian rules are widely reported to bar right-hand-drive vehicles from registration, and we did not find an exception on the official pages we checked. Confirm the current position with the Nigeria Customs Service and the FRSC before you buy. If the rule applies, a South African car would need conversion, which is costly and may not be accepted, so for most people shipping a South African car to Nigeria does not make sense.

Working out the Nigerian duty

The US International Trade Administration's Nigeria guide (September 2025) explains the ECOWAS Common External Tariff bands and notes that levies, excise and VAT may be added. DHL's Nigerian duty guide (June 2026) explains the method: duty is charged on the CIF value converted at the CBN rate on the day of assessment, with a 7% surcharge on the duty, the ETLS at 0.5% of CIF, the CISS at 1% of FOB, and VAT at 7.5% on CIF plus duty and levies. Vehicle rates differ by type and engine size, so ask a licensed clearing agent for the exact line; how to check a licensed customs agent.

Example, with an illustrative rate: a car with a CIF value of ₦12,000,000 on a line with 35% duty (example) carries ₦4,200,000 duty, a ₦294,000 surcharge and a ₦60,000 ETLS. If the FOB value is ₦11,000,000 (example), CISS is ₦110,000. VAT at 7.5% is then charged on ₦16,664,000 (CIF plus duty, surcharge, ETLS and CISS), which is ₦1,249,800. Total duty, levies and VAT come to ₦5,913,800, about 49% on top of the CIF value, before port, terminal and agent charges.

The South African side

Leaving South Africa, the vehicle is exported through SARS on an export declaration, usually lodged by the shipping or clearing agent. Agents commonly ask for the registration papers, proof of ownership, your ID or passport and, where the car is financed, a settlement letter from the bank, since you cannot export a car you do not fully own. Whether a police clearance or an export permit is needed for your vehicle should be confirmed with your agent and SARS; we did not verify the current requirement. If you are leaving South Africa for good, see ceasing SA tax residence.

Alternatives worth comparing

Because of the age limit and the right-hand-drive question, many returnees decide to sell the car in South Africa and buy one in Nigeria instead. Compare three numbers before deciding: what the car would fetch in South Africa, the full landed cost of shipping and clearing it in Nigeria (freight, insurance, duty, levies, VAT, port and agent charges), and the price of a similar left-hand-drive car already in Nigeria. If the second number is close to the third, the risk and months of delay are rarely worth it. If you are moving household goods rather than a vehicle, a container of personal effects is a separate exercise with its own rules.

Before you commit

  1. Check the year of manufacture: under 15 years at the time of import into Nigeria.
  2. Confirm whether a right-hand-drive car can be registered in Nigeria.
  3. Get a duty estimate from a Nigerian clearing agent for that exact model and year.
  4. Make sure the car is paid off and the papers are in your name.
  5. Book shipping from Durban; the steps are in shipping a container from Durban to Lagos.
  6. Before buying a car on arrival in Nigeria, see customs papers and VIN checks.

Where Pryme fits

Nigerian duty and clearing charges are paid in naira. A Pryme account opened from South Africa can hold naira so the agent in Lagos can be paid by transfer; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How old can a car be to import into Nigeria?

Less than 15 years from the year of manufacture, according to the Nigeria Trade Information Portal.

Can I ship my right-hand-drive car from South Africa to Nigeria?

Nigerian rules are widely reported to bar right-hand-drive vehicles from registration. Confirm with Nigeria Customs and the FRSC before shipping.

How is duty on a car worked out in Nigeria?

On the CIF value at the CBN rate on the day of assessment, plus surcharge, ETLS, CISS and VAT. The rate depends on the vehicle line.

Do I need a Form M to import a car into Nigeria?

Yes. The trade portal says it is mandatory above $10,000, and banks treat Form M as required for imports of any value.
