Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Shipping a container from Durban to Lagos: the process

From booking and export clearance in Durban to Form M, certificates and customs clearance at Apapa or Tin Can: the steps and the papers at each stage.

The short answer

Shipping a container from Durban to Lagos runs in two halves: in South Africa, the exporter books space, packs the container and clears it for export through SARS, receiving a bill of lading; in Nigeria, the importer must already hold a registered Form M and any SONCAP or NAFDAC certificates, then clears the container at Apapa or Tin Can and pays duty, levies and VAT.

Whether you are an exporter in KwaZulu-Natal selling to a Lagos buyer or a Nigerian in South Africa sending stock home, a Durban to Lagos container follows the same sequence. Most delays come from paperwork that should have been done before the container was even booked. We set out the steps in order and say who does each.

Before booking: the Nigerian paperwork comes first

Nigeria requires a Form M for every import, whatever its value, registered by the importer through its bank on the Single Window for Trade, according to Sterling Bank's Form M guide. The Form M needs a proforma invoice no older than 90 days, an electronic insurance certificate covering 110% of the invoice value, and product certificates where they apply: a SON Product Certificate for SON-regulated goods and a NAFDAC certificate for food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. If the goods are SON-regulated, SON says they must be tested in the country of supply and a SONCAP Certificate obtained for clearance.

The steps in order

  1. Agree the Incoterm with the buyer (for example FOB Durban or CFR Lagos), which decides who pays freight and insurance and when risk passes.
  2. Importer registers Form M with the proforma, insurance and certificates.
  3. SONCAP testing or NAFDAC registration completed where required; see SONCAP for SA goods and NAFDAC registration.
  4. Book the container with a shipping line or freight forwarder; confirm the vessel, the cut-off date at Durban, and whether the service discharges at Apapa or Tin Can.
  5. Pack and document: commercial invoice, packing list, and certificates matching exactly what is in the box.
  6. Export clearance: the clearing agent lodges the export declaration with SARS before the container is loaded.
  7. Loading and bill of lading: the line issues the bill of lading once the container is on board. This date matters on both sides.
  8. Documents to the buyer: originals or electronic release, according to the payment terms.
  9. Clearance in Lagos: the importer's licensed agent clears the container, the importer pays duty, levies and VAT, and the container is released from the terminal.

What the importer pays in Lagos

DHL's Nigerian duty guide (June 2026) describes the calculation: import duty on the CIF value at the CBN rate on the day of assessment, a 7% surcharge on the duty, the ETLS at 0.5% of CIF, the CISS at 1% of FOB, and VAT at 7.5% on the total. The duty rate depends on the HS code and the ECOWAS Common External Tariff band, which the US International Trade Administration lists as 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 35%. Terminal, shipping line and agency charges come on top; get them quoted in writing. To check an agent, see how to check a licensed customs agent.

Why the bill of lading date matters

For a Nigerian exporter, non-oil export proceeds must be repatriated within 90 days of export under the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, effective 1 June 2026. For a South African importer who paid in advance, the customs declaration must reach the bank within four months of payment. On a Durban to Lagos run you are the exporter, so the date mainly matters for your payment terms: if the balance is due against the bill of lading, the buyer pays once the goods are on board.

Common causes of delay

  • The proforma on the Form M has expired, or the commercial invoice does not match it.
  • The goods need SONCAP or NAFDAC paperwork that was not obtained before shipping.
  • The description or quantity on the packing list differs from what is in the container.
  • The container missed its Durban cut-off and rolled to the next vessel.

Where Pryme fits

Lagos clearing agents and terminal charges are paid in naira. A Pryme Business Account opened from South Africa can hold naira and dollars, so the buyer or your agent can be paid in naira; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. For selling terms, see selling to Nigerian buyers from SA. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

What documents do I need to ship a container to Lagos?

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and the certificates the goods need. The Nigerian buyer must have a registered Form M first.

Who pays duty on a container shipped to Nigeria?

The importer, at clearance in Lagos, unless the contract says otherwise. Duty, surcharge, levies and VAT are paid before release.

Does the container land at Apapa or Tin Can?

It depends on the shipping line's service. Confirm the discharge terminal when you book.

Can I ship before the buyer's Form M is ready?

You should not. Without a registered Form M the goods cannot be cleared through the normal process in Nigeria.
