Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Exporting medical devices from the UK to Nigeria: NAFDAC

NAFDAC registration for UK medical devices: risk classes, the documents a UK maker must provide, timelines of up to 240 workdays and labelling.

The short answer

Medical devices and in vitro diagnostics cannot be imported or sold in Nigeria unless registered with NAFDAC under its guideline VBM-R&RA-GDL-001-01 (effective 10 April 2025). A Nigerian applicant applies through the NAPAMS portal with a power of attorney from the UK manufacturer, a certificate of manufacture and free sale authenticated by the Nigerian mission, and quality and conformity evidence. NAFDAC gives a maximum of 120 workdays for Class A and 240 for Classes B to D, and a certificate lasts five years.

Nigeria is a large market for diagnostic kits, hospital equipment and consumables, and UK makers are often approached by Nigerian distributors. Before the first unit is shipped, the product needs NAFDAC registration. The work is shared: the Nigerian applicant files, but much of the evidence has to come from you as the manufacturer.

The rule

NAFDAC's Guidelines for Registration of Medical Devices Including In Vitro Diagnostics (IVDs) and Related Products, effective 10 April 2025, say devices may be manufactured, imported, exported, advertised, sold, distributed or used in Nigeria only if registered. NAFDAC will not accept new applications for products on the Federal Government import prohibition list or its own ceiling list.

Risk classes

ClassRiskMaximum processing time
ALow120 workdays
BAbove A240 workdays
CAbove B (full dossier)240 workdays
DHigh (full dossier)240 workdays

IVDs are classed A to D by individual and public health risk. Where a product could fit two classes, the higher applies. The clock stops while a NAFDAC query is open, and an applicant who does not reply within 90 days has the application closed.

What the UK manufacturer must provide

  • Power of attorney to the Nigerian applicant, signed by a senior officer, containing the words "Authority to register product with NAFDAC", stating brand ownership, notarised in the country of manufacture and valid for at least five years.
  • Certificate of Manufacture and Free Sale from a health or regulatory body in the country of manufacture, authenticated by the Nigerian mission. For UK-made devices, ask the MHRA how it issues such certificates, then have it authenticated through the Nigeria High Commission in London.
  • Certificate of analysis on the testing laboratory's letterhead, with batch and dates.
  • Quality management system certificate and a declaration of conformity with recognised standards.
  • Labels and instructions for use, and evidence of trademark registration.
  • GMP inspection invitation letter naming the local agent; NAFDAC may inspect the manufacturing site.

The Nigerian side adds a declaration notarised in Nigeria, CAC incorporation evidence, and, for moderate and high-risk devices, dossier screening clearance.

The process

  1. Applicant requests dossier submission access and uploads documents to NAPAMS.
  2. NAFDAC issues an electronic import permit for samples.
  3. GMP inspection of the manufacturer, where required.
  4. Labelling and instructions-for-use review.
  5. Samples submitted for laboratory analysis with proof of fee payment.
  6. Review by NAFDAC's Food and Drug Registration Committee, then the certificate.

Fees are set by NAFDAC's tariff; the guideline gives no amounts. Registration does not cover advertising, which needs a separate approval, and paying the fee does not itself confer registration.

Labelling

Labels must show at least the device name, manufacturer name and address, device identifier, batch or lot number, and manufacturing and expiry dates (month and year), plus sterile and single-use statements where they apply, directions for use and storage conditions.

Planning the timeline

Registration is the long pole. At the guideline maximum of 240 workdays, a Class C device could take about a year from accepted application to certificate, before shipping and clearance. Practical points:

  • Start the power of attorney and free sale certificate early; notarisation and mission authentication each take time.
  • Make sure the Nigerian applicant is incorporated with the CAC and able to receive the GMP inspection correspondence.
  • Agree who pays NAFDAC fees, sample costs and inspection travel in your distribution contract.
  • Diary the five-year renewal; NAFDAC publishes a separate renewal guideline.
  • Reply to every NAFDAC query well inside the 90 days, or the application closes.

Other checks

Where Pryme fits

Registration can take months, so distributors often pay in stages. A Pryme Business Account can receive GBP, USD or EUR, and invoicing keeps each stage linked to its payment. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do medical devices need NAFDAC registration?

Yes. NAFDAC's 2025 guideline says devices and IVDs may be imported, sold or used in Nigeria only if registered.

How long does NAFDAC medical device registration take?

The guideline sets a maximum of 120 workdays for Class A and 240 workdays for Classes B, C and D, with the clock stopped during queries.

Who applies for NAFDAC registration, the UK maker or the Nigerian importer?

A Nigerian applicant applies through NAPAMS, with a power of attorney and other documents from the manufacturer.

How long is a NAFDAC device certificate valid?

Five years, according to the 2025 guideline, though NAFDAC may revoke, suspend or vary it.
