Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Petty cash and expense claims for a Lagos office run from SA

Policies, receipts, approvals and reconciliation for spending in a Lagos office managed from South Africa, with a sample float and claim flow.

The short answer

Run a Lagos office's spending from South Africa with three things: a written policy that says what can be bought, up to what amount and with what proof; a small naira float topped up only against reconciled receipts; and approvals done digitally by a named manager, with anything above a set limit escalated to South Africa. Pay in naira, keep receipts that show the supplier and amount, and reconcile monthly before the next top-up.

A small Lagos office spends money every day on diesel, data, transport, office supplies and the occasional emergency repair. When finance sits in Johannesburg or Cape Town, the risk is either a float nobody can account for or a process so slow that staff pay out of pocket and stop claiming. The aim is a system that is quick in Lagos and checkable from South Africa.

Write the policy first

A one-page policy prevents most disputes. It should cover:

  • What petty cash and expense claims may be used for, and what needs a purchase order instead.
  • A per-item limit for petty cash and a monthly limit for the float.
  • Who holds the float, who approves claims and who reviews them in South Africa.
  • What counts as a valid receipt (see below).
  • Deadlines: claims within a set number of days, reconciliation by a fixed date each month.
  • What is never allowed: splitting a purchase to stay under a limit, paying personal costs, cash advances without approval.

Pay and price in naira

Spending in Nigeria should be in naira. The CBN's Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as reported by TheCable (3 June 2026), states that the naira is the legal tender for transactions in Nigeria and that domestic transactions between Nigerian entities are priced and settled in naira, with limited exemptions. Fund the float in naira and keep the ledger in naira; convert to rand only in the South African books (see setting up a naira ledger).

A sample float and claim flow

  1. South Africa funds a naira float, for example ₦500,000, into an account controlled by the office manager.
  2. Staff spend from the float or pay and claim, attaching a receipt for each item.
  3. The office manager approves claims up to the per-item limit; above it, a South African manager approves before purchase.
  4. At month end the office manager submits the reconciliation: opening float, receipts, closing balance.
  5. South Africa checks the reconciliation and tops the float back up by the amount receipted, not by a round number.

Worked example (illustrative)

ItemAmount
Opening float₦500,000
Diesel (3 receipts)(₦210,000)
Office supplies (2 receipts)(₦45,000)
Staff transport (6 receipts)(₦60,000)
Closing balance counted₦185,000
Top-up to restore float₦315,000

₦210,000 + ₦45,000 + ₦60,000 = ₦315,000 spent, leaving ₦185,000; topping up ₦315,000 restores ₦500,000. If the count does not match the receipts, the gap is investigated before any top-up. Amounts are examples.

What counts as a receipt

Ask for receipts showing the supplier's name, date, description, amount and how it was paid. For transfers, the transfer receipt alone shows that money moved, not what it bought; pair it with the supplier's invoice. For more, see how to run petty cash in a Nigerian business.

Tax points to watch

  • Benefits in kind. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025's Twelfth Schedule, as summarised by Streamsowers & Köhn, benefits in kind are taxable where the employer incurs expenses on an employee's behalf. Paying a staff member's personal costs from the float can create a taxable benefit.
  • Withholding tax. If the Nigerian entity pays a contractor for services, Nigeria's 2024 withholding tax regulations (PwC summary) require deduction at source and a receipt to the payee; petty cash is not a way around that.
  • Bank charges. The NRS has said VAT applies to bank charges, not to the amount transferred; record charges separately.

When the office outgrows petty cash

Petty cash suits small, frequent purchases. Once the same supplier is paid every week, such as a diesel vendor or a cleaning company, move it to invoice and transfer, with a purchase order and the normal approval chain. Larger or recurring costs paid in cash are hard to evidence and harder to audit. A useful test: if a single category takes more than half the float each month, it belongs in the supplier payment run rather than the cash box. Review the categories every quarter and adjust the float down as payments move to transfer.

Controls from South Africa

  • Two people in Lagos for any cash count, and a surprise count each quarter.
  • Monthly review of the reconciliation by someone outside the office.
  • Digital approvals with a log, so the approval date sits next to the receipt.
  • Rotate the float holder if the office is large enough.

See also approval rules for payments to Nigeria and cash flow planning across rand and naira.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds naira for the office, and any customer can generate a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai that South Africa can check is genuine and unaltered. The Finance agent prepares the monthly reconciliation for a person to approve.

Questions people ask

How much petty cash should a small Lagos office keep?

Enough for about a month of small items, set in the policy and topped up only against receipts. The right figure depends on your costs.

Can we reimburse Lagos staff in rand?

Spending in Nigeria should be in naira; the CBN's 2026 FX manual says the naira is legal tender for transactions in Nigeria. Reimburse in naira.

Is a transfer receipt enough for an expense claim?

It proves payment, not what was bought. Pair it with the supplier's invoice or receipt.

Can paying staff costs from petty cash create tax?

Yes. Benefits in kind are taxable in Nigeria where the employer incurs expenses on an employee's behalf.
