Meet Eva, the assistant inside the Pryme app. She holds dollars, pounds, euros and Naira side by side, swaps at a locked rate, pays bills in any of them and sends anywhere, asking before anything moves.

We give you a limit to spend at the shops and services you already use — and an account that works on your month while you get on with it. Dollars, pounds and euros sit beside your Naira, and an assistant handles the running of it, asking you first every single time.

You are not borrowing. You are selling to somebody who already has the money — and that money can only be spent with a business like yours.

Resolved 4 conversations — two deliveries, one refund. The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.
An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.
A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.
Solid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.
More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.
Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.
Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.
Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.
Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.
Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.
Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.
Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.
Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to set up a naira bank ledger in SA books: functional currency, transaction-date rates, year-end revaluation under IAS 21 and section 24I.
Set up the naira account as a foreign currency bank account with NGN as its currency, record each transaction at the spot rate on its date, and revalue the closing naira balance to rand at the year-end (or month-end) closing rate, posting the difference to an unrealised exchange gain or loss account. IAS 21 sets the accounting; SARS's section 24I applies a similar year-end translation for tax, so keep the rates you used.
A South African business that pays Nigerian suppliers, holds a naira account in Lagos, or invoices Nigerian clients in naira needs those balances in its rand books. Done well, a naira ledger shows exactly what you hold in naira and what it is worth in rand; done badly, it becomes a single rand figure nobody can reconcile. This guide sets out the structure. It is not tied to one accounting package; check that your package lists NGN as a currency and supports multicurrency on your plan.
IAS 21 defines functional currency as the currency of the primary economic environment in which the entity operates, judged mainly by the currency of its sales prices and of its labour and material costs. For most South African companies that is the rand, and naira is a foreign currency. A Nigerian subsidiary will usually have naira as its own functional currency and keep its own books; this guide is about naira items inside the South African entity.
IAS 21 (paragraph 21) records a foreign currency transaction at the spot rate on the transaction date, and allows an average rate for a period as a practical shortcut unless rates fluctuate significantly (paragraph 22). Naira has moved sharply at times, so a monthly average may not be acceptable in volatile months; ask your auditor. When you pay a naira invoice, the difference between the rand value at invoice date and at payment date is a realised exchange difference.
Monetary items, such as cash, receivables and payables in naira, are translated at the closing rate at each reporting date, with differences taken to profit or loss (IAS 21 paragraphs 23 and 28). Non-monetary items carried at cost, such as prepaid equipment, stay at the historical rate.
| Step | Naira | Rate (R per ₦1) | Rand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Mar: transfer in to fund Lagos account | ₦20,000,000 | 0.0120 | R240,000 |
| 15 Apr: pay Lagos supplier | (₦8,000,000) | 0.0118 | (R94,400) |
| Book value before revaluation | ₦12,000,000 | R145,600 | |
| 28 Feb year end: revalue at closing rate | ₦12,000,000 | 0.0110 | R132,000 |
| Unrealised exchange loss | R13,600 |
R240,000 less R94,400 is R145,600. At the closing rate, ₦12,000,000 is worth R132,000, so the revaluation posts a R13,600 loss. Of that R13,600, R1,600 arises because the ₦8,000,000 paid out was valued at 0.0118 rather than the 0.0120 at which it came in (₦8,000,000 × 0.0002); some packages post that part as realised, leaving R12,000 unrealised on the ₦12,000,000 still held (₦12,000,000 × 0.0010). All rates are invented for illustration.
SARS's Interpretation Note 101 (12 July 2023) says section 24I applies to any company and that units of foreign currency and foreign currency debts are exchange items, with exchange differences calculated each year whether realised or not, using the year-end rate for open items. SARS will generally accept the functional currency used for accounts if it is set under IAS 21. In practice your accounting revaluation and your tax computation will be close, but they are separate calculations; see section 24I.
For the wider set-up across three currencies, see multicurrency bookkeeping in ZAR, NGN and USD, and for the mechanics from the Nigerian side, foreign currency accounting: revaluation and realised gains.
A Pryme Business multicurrency account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, and its statements show each currency separately, which makes the monthly naira reconciliation simpler. The Finance agent prepares reconciliations for a person to approve.
Yes, if your package supports multicurrency and lists NGN. Set it up as a separate bank account with NGN as its currency.
IAS 21 uses the spot rate on the transaction date; an average is allowed only if rates do not fluctuate significantly. Choose one documented source and use it consistently.
IAS 21 requires translation at each reporting date. Many businesses revalue monthly so management accounts are accurate, and at least at year end.
For a company, section 24I generally includes exchange gains and allows losses each year, realised or not. Check your position with a tax practitioner.
