Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Exchange control rules for freelancers paid from Nigeria

What the SARB's public rules say about freelancers receiving foreign income, how banks report inbound payments and what proof they ask for.

The short answer

South African exchange control runs through authorised dealers (banks) and ADLAs, which report every cross-border foreign exchange transaction to the SARB's Financial Surveillance Department daily. Residents may open foreign currency accounts for permissible transactions. The SARB's public FAQ sets repatriation rules for goods exports but not for service income, so confirm your bank's requirements and keep an invoice for every payment.

Exchange control is the part of South African money rules that most freelancers only meet when a payment is held and the bank asks what it is for. If Nigerian clients pay you, it helps to know what the Reserve Bank's rules actually say, what they do not say, and what your bank will ask you for. This article sticks to what the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) publishes and is clear where its public pages are silent.

Who runs exchange control and how it reaches you

Exchange control is administered by the SARB's Financial Surveillance Department. You do not deal with the SARB directly; you deal with an authorised dealer, which the SARB's FAQ defines as a bank registered under the Banks Act and authorised to deal in foreign exchange, or with an authorised dealer in foreign exchange with limited authority (ADLA), such as some money transfer operators and bureaux de change for designated transactions.

The key point for freelancers is reporting. The SARB says all cross-border foreign exchange transactions by authorised dealers and ADLAs are captured on its Financial Surveillance reporting system and reported daily. In practice that means each payment from a Nigerian client is classified when your bank processes it, which is why the bank asks you for the reason and sometimes for an invoice. Our guide on balance of payments reason codes explains the classification.

Receiving money: what the public rules say

  • Foreign currency accounts: the SARB FAQ says private individuals resident in South Africa may open a foreign currency account for permissible transactions. Your bank decides what it treats as permissible and what proof it wants.
  • Repatriation: the FAQ describes monitoring the repatriation of export proceeds for goods exporters under Exchange Control Regulations 6, 10 and 11. It does not set out a separate rule for income from services, and we did not find one on SARB's public pages in October 2026.
  • Outward allowances: the single discretionary allowance (R1 million per adult resident per calendar year) and the foreign capital allowance (up to R10 million, with a tax compliance status PIN) govern money you send out, not money you receive.

What your bank will usually want

Requirements differ by bank, but when an inbound payment is queried the evidence that resolves it is consistent with how cross-border payments are classified: who paid, what for, and whether it matches your profile.

  1. An invoice in your name to the paying client, with the amount and currency that arrived.
  2. A contract, statement of work or email showing the engagement.
  3. Your identity and residence documents up to date with the bank, including your permit if you are a foreign national.
  4. A short description you can repeat consistently, for example 'consulting fees from a Nigerian client'.
  5. For large or unusual amounts, a note of why the payment is larger than usual.

Foreign nationals and non-residents

The SARB FAQ speaks of residents, non-residents and visitors rather than of foreign nationals. A Nigerian living and working in South Africa on a permit is often treated by banks as a resident for exchange control purposes, but banks apply their own rules to foreign nationals, especially around permit expiry. If your account is restricted when a permit lapses, see our guide on frozen accounts after a permit expires. Exchange control status is not the same as tax residence, which SARS decides on its own tests.

The Nigerian end of the payment

Your Nigerian client faces rules too. When a Nigerian company pays for services from abroad in foreign currency, its bank asks for documents under CBN foreign exchange rules; a Stanbic IBTC list of approved documents for such payments includes Form A, the service agreement, the invoice and evidence of tax paid on the amount. A client paying in naira to a Nigerian account avoids that step, which is one reason many freelancers keep a naira account in Nigeria and convert later.

Questions to ask your bank

  • Which reason or category it uses for regular fees from clients outside South Africa, and what description you should give.
  • Whether it will credit foreign currency to a foreign currency account or convert to rand on arrival, and at what point the rate is set.
  • What documents it wants on file so that routine payments are not held each month.
  • Whether anything changes for you as a foreign national, for example when your permit is renewed.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme Business Account a Nigerian client can pay you in naira to Nigerian account details, and the money stays in naira until you choose to convert with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. Keep your invoices with each payment so your South African bank's questions are quick to answer.

Questions people ask

Do I have to bring my Nigerian freelance income into South Africa?

The SARB's public FAQ does not set a repatriation rule for service income; it describes repatriation monitoring for goods exporters. Ask your bank and keep its answer in writing. Tax is a separate matter: SARS taxes resident income wherever it sits.

Why did my bank hold a payment from Nigeria?

Banks must classify and report cross-border payments to the SARB. A held payment usually needs an invoice or contract showing what it was for.

Can I open a dollar account in South Africa as a freelancer?

The SARB says resident individuals may open a foreign currency account for permissible transactions. Your bank decides what it accepts and what documents it needs.

Does the R1 million allowance limit what I can receive?

No. The single discretionary allowance applies to money sent out of South Africa, not to payments you receive.
