Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Etibe and cooperatives in Uyo: how they work and the risks

How etibe rotating savings and cooperative societies work in Uyo, the usual rules, what goes wrong, and how to protect your money in a group.

The short answer

Etibe is the Ibibio name commonly used in Uyo for a rotating savings group: members pay a fixed sum each period and one member collects the whole pot in turn, so there is no interest and no lender. A cooperative society is different: it is registered with the state, keeps accounts and may lend to members. Both rely on trust; the main risks are a member who stops paying after collecting, a collector who disappears, and schemes that promise returns.

Before banks reached every street, rotating savings groups were how many families in Uyo raised money for rent, school fees, a sewing machine or a shop. They are still common among traders, church members, workplace colleagues and market women. Cooperative societies, often formed at workplaces, do a similar job with more structure. This guide explains how each works, the rules groups usually set, what goes wrong, and how to make your group safer.

How an etibe works

In a typical etibe, a fixed number of members each pay the same amount at each meeting, weekly or monthly. At every meeting one member takes the whole pot. The order is set at the start, by ballot, by agreement or by need. When everyone has collected once, the cycle ends or starts again.

A worked example (labelled example)

Ten members each contribute ₦20,000 a month. Each month one member collects ₦200,000 (10 × ₦20,000). Over ten months each member pays in ₦200,000 and takes out ₦200,000. The first collector gets the equivalent of an interest-free advance; the last collector has effectively saved for ten months with no return. With prices rising, the last collector's ₦200,000 buys less than the first collector's did, which is why groups often let members swap positions or give the last slots to people saving for a fixed goal.

Usual rules

  • A fixed contribution and a fixed meeting date.
  • A written list of members, phone numbers and the collection order.
  • A penalty for late payment, often a small fixed fine.
  • A rule that someone who has collected must keep paying until the cycle ends, sometimes backed by a guarantor.
  • A treasurer or leader who records each payment and payout.

Cooperative societies

A cooperative society is a registered body owned by its members. Members buy shares and save regularly; the society may lend to members from the pool, and any surplus can be shared. Registration is done by each state's ministry or department responsible for cooperatives. We could not find Akwa Ibom's registration fees or checklist online. Other states give a sense of what is involved: Kano's 2023 guidelines require at least 10 members, named officers and a non-refundable fee, while Lagos requires at least 20 members aged 18 or over, bye-laws and an inaugural meeting with a ministry representative. Ask the Akwa Ibom ministry for its current requirements before you register.

Tax and cooperatives

The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 exempts a co-operative society registered under a law relating to co-operative societies, but not profits from a trade or business it carries on. If your cooperative runs a shop or lends commercially, ask a tax adviser how that applies. An informal etibe is not a registered society and has no such status.

Etibe and cooperative compared

EtibeRegistered cooperative
Legal statusInformal agreementRegistered with the state
RecordsKept by the leader, if at allRequired: accounts, minutes, bye-laws
Interest or returnsNonePossible dividends; loans to members with charges
If someone defaultsGroup pressure, guarantor, or court as a debt claimBye-laws, the society's officers and the state regulator
Main riskDefault after collecting; leader disappearsPoor management, insider loans, weak audits

What goes wrong

  • A member collects early and stops paying. Everyone who has not yet collected loses.
  • The leader or collector disappears with a pot, especially where cash changes hands.
  • Fake groups that copy the language of etibe but promise fixed returns or bonuses for bringing in new members. That is a Ponzi pattern, not a savings group; see our guide to investment scams.
  • Cooperative loans to insiders that are never repaid, leaving members' savings tied up.

Steps to make a group safer

  1. Keep the group small enough that members know each other.
  2. Write the rules down and have every member sign.
  3. Pay by bank transfer into one account in the group's or the treasurer's name, so every payment is recorded.
  4. Put the earliest slots with members who have a guarantor or a long track record.
  5. Share a running record with all members after each meeting.
  6. For a cooperative, insist on annual accounts and an audit.

If a dispute does arise, deal with it early. Call a meeting, set out the record of who paid and who collected, and agree a repayment plan with the defaulting member and their guarantor. An unpaid etibe contribution is a debt, and the written record is what turns a quarrel into a claim you can pursue. For a broader comparison with formal saving, see ajo, esusu and thrift vs a savings app.

Where Pryme fits

If you want the discipline of etibe without depending on other people's payments, a Fixed or Flexible Savings Box holds naira for you; rates are shown in the app. The Interest-free Box earns nothing by design, which suits savers who prefer not to earn interest. Your Personal Assistant can remind you of your contribution date and prepare the transfer for you to approve.

Questions people ask

What is etibe in Akwa Ibom?

Etibe is the name commonly used in Uyo and across Ibibio-speaking areas for a rotating savings group, where members contribute the same amount and take turns collecting the pot.

Is etibe safe?

It depends on the members. The main risks are a member who stops paying after collecting and a leader who disappears with cash. Written rules and bank transfers reduce both.

How do I register a cooperative society in Akwa Ibom?

Apply to the state ministry responsible for cooperatives. Its fees and checklist were not published online when we checked, so ask the ministry directly.

Does etibe pay interest?

No. Each member takes out what they put in. Any group promising returns on contributions is not a rotating savings group.
