Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying for an estate plot in instalments: default clauses

What can happen if you miss instalments on a Nigerian estate plot, the contract clauses that decide it, and what to agree before you pay from abroad.

The short answer

What happens depends on your contract of sale: common default clauses add interest, give a grace period, then let the developer terminate, re-sell the plot and refund what you paid less a deduction. Nigerian courts will not enforce a clause that works as a penalty rather than a genuine estimate of loss, and in Lagos the LASRERA Law gives buyers a complaints route against registered developers. Read and negotiate these clauses before the first payment.

Instalment plans make estate plots affordable for many Nigerians abroad: a deposit, then monthly or quarterly payments over one to three years. The marketing focuses on the monthly figure. The contract clauses that matter most are the ones that apply if life intervenes and you miss a payment. This guide explains the usual clauses, how the law treats them, and what to check from abroad.

The clauses that decide what happens

ClauseWhat it usually saysWhat to look for
Grace periodDays allowed after a missed instalment before defaultHow long, and whether notice must be sent to you in writing
Default interest or chargeExtra amount on late instalmentsRate and basis stated clearly; capped or not
Price reviewDeveloper may raise the price if payments are late or the plan is extendedWhether it applies to sums already paid
TerminationDeveloper may end the contract after continued defaultNotice period and how notice reaches you abroad
Refund on terminationPaid sums returned less an administrative or forfeiture chargePercentage, timeline for refund, and whether refund is in instalments
Re-allocationDeveloper may move you to a different plotYour consent required or not
Documents on completionAllocation letter, survey and deed only after full paymentWhat you hold while still paying

How the law treats forfeiture

Nigerian law distinguishes between liquidated damages, a genuine pre-estimate of the loss a breach causes, which is enforceable without proof of loss, and a penalty, an extravagant sum meant to deter, which is not enforceable; the claimant must then prove actual loss. A BusinessDay explainer (Broderick Bozimo and Co., October 2025) cites the Supreme Court in Oyeneyin v Akinkugbe and the English case Dunlop v New Garage. A clause that lets a developer keep most of what you paid for one missed instalment may be open to challenge on this basis. Whether it is a penalty depends on the facts, so take legal advice before relying on it.

Lagos: the LASRERA Law

If the estate is in Lagos, the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Law 2022 applies to developers and other real estate dealers. Summaries on Mondaq (Famsville, May 2022) describe:

  • Developers must register with the Authority and disclose projects; the register of dealers is open to public inspection.
  • Client money must be kept in a separate client account.
  • The Authority receives and investigates complaints, can set up a committee of inquiry and offers mediation; a mediated agreement endorsed by a magistrate or judge is enforceable.
  • Unregistered dealers face fines and daily penalties under section 48.
  • A one-month pre-action notice applies before suing the Authority.

The summary notes that the law defines off-plan arrangements but does not set detailed refund rules, so your contract still governs the money. Outside Lagos, check whether the state has a similar regulator.

A worked example

Example only. Kemi in Atlanta agrees ₦12,000,000 for a plot: ₦2,400,000 deposit and 12 monthly payments of ₦800,000. After paying the deposit and 6 instalments (₦2,400,000 + ₦4,800,000 = ₦7,200,000), she misses three months. Her contract allows termination after 60 days' default and a refund "less 20% administrative charge". If the developer terminates, the refund is ₦7,200,000 − ₦1,440,000 = ₦5,760,000. If the contract also says refunds are paid "within 90 days of re-sale of the plot", she may wait much longer. A 5% charge would have cost ₦360,000 instead of ₦1,440,000, which is why these numbers are worth negotiating.

What to agree before paying

  1. Verify the developer and title first: documents to see before paying, and in Lagos, the LASRERA register.
  2. Get a written grace period and a requirement that default notices go to your email as well as any Nigerian address.
  3. Cap default charges and the refund deduction, and fix a refund timeline that does not depend on re-sale.
  4. State which plot is yours by survey reference, and that re-allocation needs your written consent.
  5. Agree what documents you receive at each stage, including a contract of sale at the start; see what an allocation letter gives you.
  6. Pay only to the developer's company account and keep every receipt; staged payment options are covered in escrow and milestones.

If you are about to default

Write to the developer before the due date, explain, and propose a revised schedule. Get any agreed change in writing, signed by an authorised officer. A written variation protects you far better than a phone call to a sales agent.

Where Pryme fits

Instalments are easier to keep up when the naira is ready. A Pryme multicurrency account lets you hold naira, with deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, and convert from GBP, USD or EUR with Swap when you choose. Each payment can carry a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai, useful if the payment record is ever disputed.

Questions people ask

What happens if I miss estate land instalment payments in Nigeria?

It depends on the contract. Typically late charges apply, then after a grace period the developer may terminate and refund what you paid less a deduction.

Can a developer keep all my money if I default?

A clause that works as a penalty rather than a genuine estimate of loss may not be enforceable in Nigerian courts. Take legal advice on your contract.

Where can I complain about a Lagos estate developer?

The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) receives complaints and offers mediation under the LASRERA Law 2022.

Should I get title documents before I finish paying?

Agree a contract of sale at the start and a clear list of documents at each stage. Many developers issue allocation and deeds only after full payment.
