Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Ending a Nigerian employee's contract from Canada: the rules

Notice periods under Nigeria's Labour Act, pay in lieu, final pay, leave owed and the papers to keep when you end a contract from Canada.

The short answer

Nigeria's Labour Act sets minimum notice by length of service: one day up to three months, one week up to two years, two weeks up to five years and one month after five years, in writing for a week or more, with pay in lieu allowed (section 11). Follow the contract if it gives more, pay all wages due by the end of notice, and keep a written termination letter, the final pay calculation and proof of payment.

Start with the contract and the Act

When you manage someone in Lagos from Toronto, the legal relationship is set by their contract and by Nigerian law, not by Ontario's Employment Standards Act. The Labour Act (Cap L1 LFN 2004) is the baseline. Section 7 requires a written statement of terms within three months of starting, including notice. If your contract gives longer notice than the Act, the contract wins; if it gives less, the Act's minimum applies.

One caveat: the Act defines "worker" to exclude people exercising administrative, executive, technical or professional functions (section 91). Many senior or professional staff fall outside that definition, and for them the contract and the courts' case law carry more weight. Draft as if the minimums apply anyway.

Notice periods

Length of continuous serviceMinimum notice (Labour Act s.11)
Three months or lessOne day
More than three months, less than two yearsOne week
Two years, less than five yearsTwo weeks
Five years or moreOne month
  • Notice of one week or more must be in writing (s.11(3)).
  • Either side may waive notice or accept payment in lieu (s.11(6)).
  • Pay in lieu is calculated on money wages, excluding overtime and allowances (s.11(9)).
  • Wages are due on or before the end of the notice period (s.11(7)).

Do you need a reason?

Nigerian law here is unsettled. Templars' June 2023 review summarises Supreme Court decisions holding that an employer could end a contract without giving reasons, and National Industrial Court decisions going the other way, including one in 2022 that held "services no longer required" to be wrongful. Other NICN judgments have declined to apply the unratified ILO Convention 158. The safer course is to state a genuine reason, follow any disciplinary process in the contract or handbook, and keep the evidence.

Fixed-term contracts

A fixed-term contract generally cannot be ended early except for serious breach. Adeola Oyinlade & Co's note on Mondaq (29 October 2025) says the party ending early may owe compensation for the remaining term, and that a contract allowing termination by notice may not truly be fixed-term. Check which type you signed.

Redundancy

If roles are cut because of excess staff, section 20 requires you to inform the union or workers' representatives of the reasons and extent, apply "last in, first out" subject to merit, and use best endeavours to negotiate redundancy pay. The Act does not set a statutory redundancy pay formula.

Final pay: what to include

  • Salary up to the last day, or to the end of notice.
  • Pay in lieu of notice if you are not asking them to work it.
  • Accrued annual leave: section 18 entitles workers to at least six working days after 12 months, and someone leaving after six to twelve months gets pro-rata holiday pay.
  • Any bonus or 13th month the contract promises on leaving.
  • PAYE and pension deductions on the final payment, remitted on time.

Worked example

Example only. A developer has worked for three years on ₦600,000 a month basic. Minimum notice is two weeks. You pay in lieu: ₦600,000 × 12 ÷ 52 × 2 = ₦276,923 (rounded), plus salary to the last day and any unused leave. Overtime and allowances are left out of the notice pay under s.11(9), though the contract may be more generous.

Doing it from Canada: the sequence

Distance makes process more important, not less. A badly handled video call at 7 a.m. Toronto time can turn a routine exit into a claim at the National Industrial Court.

  1. Check the contract: notice, any probation clause, disciplinary steps, and whether it is fixed-term.
  2. Work out the service length and the notice due under the contract and section 11, whichever is longer.
  3. Prepare the letter and final pay figures before the meeting.
  4. Hold the conversation by video with a second person present, then send the letter by email the same day and ask for acknowledgement.
  5. Cut system access at the agreed time and arrange collection or courier return of equipment.
  6. Pay final amounts on or before the end of notice and send a pay statement.

If the person is engaged through an employer of record, the EOR is the legal employer and must issue the notice; your role is to instruct it and agree the figures.

Papers to keep

  1. A signed termination letter giving the date, notice or pay in lieu, and the reason.
  2. A final pay statement showing each element and deductions.
  3. Proof of payment into the employee's account.
  4. Return of company property (laptop, access, documents).
  5. A record of PAYE and pension remitted on the final pay.
  6. A service letter if the employee asks, confirming dates and role.

This is information, not legal advice. For disputes, a Nigerian employment lawyer is the right adviser.

Where Pryme fits

Final pay is usually due quickly and in naira. From a Pryme Business Account you can make the payment through payroll or a single transfer and generate a verifiable receipt with Pryme's VerifyDoc.ai partnership as proof of payment. See also PAYE and pension for staff in Nigeria and the Nigeria library termination letter template.

Questions people ask

How much notice must I give a Nigerian employee?

Under section 11 of the Labour Act: one day up to three months' service, one week up to two years, two weeks up to five years, one month for five years or more, unless the contract gives more.

Can I pay salary instead of notice?

Yes. Section 11(6) allows payment in lieu, calculated on money wages excluding overtime and allowances.

Do I have to give a reason for termination in Nigeria?

The courts are divided. Some National Industrial Court judgments require a valid reason, so give one and keep evidence.

Is redundancy pay compulsory in Nigeria?

The Labour Act requires consultation and best endeavours to negotiate redundancy pay but sets no formula. Check the contract and any collective agreement.
