Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Hiring your first employee in SA: UIF, COIDA and PAYE

The registrations a small South African employer completes before the first payday: PAYE and SDL with SARS, UIF contributions and COIDA cover.

The short answer

Before paying a first employee in South Africa, register as an employer with SARS for PAYE within 21 business days of becoming an employer (unless no employee is liable for normal tax), deduct UIF of 1% from pay and add 1% as employer, and register with the Compensation Fund for COIDA injury cover. SDL is not required while annual leviable pay stays at or below R500,000. Monthly PAYE and UIF are paid on the EMP201 within seven days after month end.

The four registrations

RegistrationWhat it isRule (SARS employer guide, 2025 tax year, unless noted)
PAYEEmployees' tax deducted from salariesRegister within 21 business days of becoming an employer, unless none of the employees is liable for normal tax
UIFUnemployment insuranceEmployee 1% and employer 1% of remuneration, up to R17,712 a month (R212,544 a year), ceiling from 1 June 2021
SDLSkills development levyNot required if total leviable pay over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000
COIDAWorkplace injury and disease coverRegistration with the Compensation Fund at the Department of Employment and Labour

The SARS guide says employer registration is made on eFiling or at a SARS branch. Employers that are not registered with SARS for PAYE, or not liable for SDL, register for UIF with the UI Commissioner instead, so a very small employer whose staff earn below the tax threshold still registers for UIF.

Step by step for a new employer

  1. Confirm the company is on SARS eFiling; its income tax registration comes automatically through CIPC.
  2. Add the employer registration (PAYE, and UIF and SDL where they apply) on eFiling within 21 business days of becoming an employer.
  3. Register with the Compensation Fund for COIDA.
  4. Give each employee a written contract and collect their tax number and identity document or passport.
  5. Run payroll: calculate PAYE from SARS's tables, deduct 1% UIF, add the employer's 1%.
  6. Pay PAYE and UIF on the EMP201 within seven days after the end of the month; if that day is a weekend or public holiday, pay on the last business day before it.
  7. Issue payslips and keep records for the reconciliation SARS requires each year on the EMP501.

Worked example: one employee

Example only. A shop pays its first employee R9,000 a month. For the 2025 tax year, SARS's guide puts the tax threshold for people under 65 at R95,750 a year. R9,000 x 12 = R108,000, above the threshold, so PAYE applies and the shop registers within 21 business days. UIF is 1% of R9,000 = R90 from the employee and R90 from the shop, R180 a month in total. Annual pay of R108,000 is far below R500,000, so SDL is not required.

Monthly itemAmount (example)
Gross salaryR9,000
UIF, employee (1%)R90 deducted
UIF, employer (1%)R90 added
PAYEFrom SARS tables for the year
Paid to SARS on EMP201PAYE + R180 UIF

Points for foreign owners

  • Business visa holders undertake that at least 60% of total staff will be South African citizens or permanent residents and must show it through a Labour Department letter within 12 months of the visa. Payroll records are the evidence; see the business visa capital rule.
  • Foreign employees need their own visa or permit that allows the job. The Immigration Regulations require employers of critical skills visa holders to ensure they work only in the position for which the visa was issued.
  • Paying yourself. A director paid a salary by the company is on payroll like any employee.
  • Staff in Nigeria. Paying someone who works from Nigeria raises Nigerian tax and pension questions; see payroll for staff in Nigeria from an SA company.

Contracts, hours and leave

Registrations are only part of being an employer. Each employee needs a written contract setting out pay, hours, leave and duties, and payslips showing deductions. Keep a file for each person with their contract, identity or passport copy, tax number, permit if they are a foreign national, and every payslip. That file is what a SARS or Labour inspector asks for, what the 60% calculation for a business visa rests on, and what protects the business if an employment dispute arises.

What to check first

  1. Is the company registered on eFiling with the right details?
  2. Has every employee's right to work been checked?
  3. Are PAYE, UIF and COIDA registrations done before the first payday?
  4. Is the EMP201 date in the calendar every month?

Common mistakes

  • Paying cash wages without PAYE or UIF because the employee asked for it.
  • Registering late and then paying penalties and interest on months already missed.
  • Forgetting COIDA until an injury happens.
  • Treating everyone as a contractor when they work fixed hours under your direction.

See also registering a new SA company with SARS.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account comes with payroll and bulk payouts for paying several people at once, and its Finance agent prepares payroll and reconciliation work for a person to approve; above a set ceiling a person approves and every action is recorded. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's financial activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I need to register for UIF if I have one employee?

Yes. UIF applies to employees generally; employers not registered with SARS for PAYE register with the UI Commissioner, according to SARS's employer guide.

How much is UIF in South Africa?

1% of remuneration from the employee and 1% from the employer, on pay up to R17,712 a month, according to SARS's 2025 guide.

When do I pay PAYE to SARS?

On the EMP201 within seven days after the end of the month in which it was deducted.

Does a small business pay SDL?

Not if total leviable pay over the next 12 months will not exceed R500,000, according to SARS.
