Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Codes & registration

Dual citizenship and the Nigerian passport

What section 28 of the Constitution says about dual citizenship, why citizens by birth can keep a Nigerian passport, and how dual nationals apply.

The short answer

Section 28 of the 1999 Constitution only makes a person forfeit Nigerian citizenship for holding another nationality if they are not a citizen of Nigeria by birth, so a Nigerian by birth can hold another citizenship and keep a Nigerian passport. Registered and naturalised citizens must renounce any other citizenship within five months of registration or naturalisation, unless they are a citizen of that other country by birth.

Many Nigerians abroad take up the citizenship of the country where they live and then ask whether they have lost their Nigerian citizenship, or whether they can keep both passports. The answer turns on how you became Nigerian in the first place. This is a summary of what the Constitution says, not legal advice on any individual case.

What section 28 says

Section 28 is headed "Dual citizenship". Its first subsection says a person "shall forfeit forthwith his Nigerian citizenship if, not being a citizen of Nigeria by birth, he acquires or retains the citizenship or nationality of a country, other than Nigeria, of which he is not a citizen by birth."

Its second subsection says that registering a person as a Nigerian citizen, or granting a certificate of naturalisation, to someone who already holds another citizenship is conditional on "effective renunciation" of that other citizenship within not more than five months from the date of registration or grant, again unless the person is a citizen by birth of the other country.

What that means in practice

How you are NigerianCan you also hold another citizenship?Notes
Citizen by birthYesSection 28 forfeiture does not apply to citizens by birth
Registered citizenOnly if you are a citizen of the other country by birthOtherwise renounce within five months of registration
Naturalised citizenOnly if you are a citizen of the other country by birthOtherwise renounce within five months of naturalisation

So a person born Nigerian who later becomes British, American or Canadian does not lose Nigerian citizenship under section 28. A person born British who later naturalises as Nigerian can keep British citizenship, because they hold it by birth. A person who naturalised elsewhere and then registered or naturalised as Nigerian would be the case section 28 aims at.

Common misunderstandings

  • "Taking a foreign oath cancels my Nigerian citizenship." Not under section 28 if you are Nigerian by birth, whatever the other country's ceremony says about allegiance.
  • "I must tell NIS when I naturalise abroad." We found no NIS requirement to report this; you simply apply as a dual national when you next need a Nigerian passport.
  • "My children automatically lose Nigerian citizenship if born abroad." Section 28 does not say that; a child's status depends on section 25 of the Constitution, which deals with citizenship by birth.

Holding two passports

If you are a citizen of Nigeria by birth and of another country, nothing in section 28 stops you holding both passports. Nigerian missions also expect dual nationals to apply: the Nigeria High Commission in London asks fresh applicants to bring their current passport, original and photocopy, "if you hold dual nationality", alongside a birth certificate showing parents' details.

Applying for a Nigerian passport as a dual national

  1. Get a NIN if you do not have one; missions say it is required. See NIN and passport applications.
  2. Gather proof of Nigerian citizenship by birth, such as your birth certificate and a parent's Nigerian passport data page.
  3. Bring your foreign passport if you hold one, as the London list requires for dual nationals.
  4. Apply and pay on the international portal, book an appointment and attend for biometrics.

Children born abroad to a Nigerian parent apply in a similar way; see passports for children born abroad.

Travelling with two passports

Practical habits help avoid problems, though they are not set out in any Nigerian rule we found:

  • Use the same passport to leave a country that you used to enter it, so entry and exit records match.
  • Book flights in the name and passport you will show at check-in.
  • Keep both passports valid; an expired Nigerian passport is a common reason for a delayed trip home.
  • Keep your names identical across both passports where you can. If they differ, carry the document that links them, such as a marriage certificate or affidavit.

What to check first

  • Were you a citizen by birth? If you are unsure, for example because neither parent was Nigerian at your birth, take legal advice.
  • Does your other country allow dual citizenship?
  • Are your NIN, BVN and both passports in the same name order?
  • If you are a registered or naturalised Nigerian, did you meet the five-month renunciation condition?

Where Pryme fits

Dual nationals often keep money in two currencies. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to Swap. See also keeping Nigerian bank accounts when you move abroad.

Questions people ask

Does Nigeria allow dual citizenship?

Yes, for citizens by birth. Section 28 of the Constitution only removes Nigerian citizenship from people who are not Nigerian by birth and acquire or keep another nationality they do not hold by birth.

Will I lose my Nigerian citizenship if I become British or American?

Not under section 28 if you are a citizen of Nigeria by birth. The other country's rules on dual citizenship also apply.

Can I have a Nigerian passport and a foreign passport?

Yes, if you are Nigerian by birth. The London High Commission asks dual nationals to bring their current foreign passport when applying for a Nigerian one.

Can a naturalised Nigerian keep their old citizenship?

Only if they hold it by birth. Otherwise section 28 requires renunciation within five months of naturalisation or registration.
