Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

ECOWAS travel certificate: who can use it and where

What the NIS ECOWAS Travel Certificate is, its two-year validity, the documents to apply, where it is issued and why it is no substitute for a passport.

The short answer

The ECOWAS Travel Certificate is an NIS travel document for Nigerians that is valid only for travel within ECOWAS member states and shows the holder is a Community citizen. The NIS says it is valid for two years, renewable for another two, and is issued at NIS headquarters, state commands, the FCT office and local government immigration offices; the NIS page does not publish a fee.

For traders, students and families who cross West African borders by road, a full passport can feel like more than they need. The ECOWAS Travel Certificate was designed for that kind of travel. It lets a regular regional traveller keep the passport at home, but its use stops at the edge of the region.

What the certificate is

The NIS page describes the certificate as "a recognized travel document valid for travels within the Sixteen (16) Countries of ECOWAS". It says the certificate proves the holder is a Community citizen and can be held alongside a national passport. Under the 1979 ECOWAS protocol, a valid travel document includes a passport or other valid document establishing identity with a photograph, issued by the citizen's member state, which is the category this certificate falls into.

Nigeria Immigration Service

Travel within the ECOWAS sub-region only
Validity

Eligible

Not published on the NIS page

Who it suits, and who it does not

  • Suits: regular road travellers to neighbouring ECOWAS states who do not need to fly further.
  • Suits: people who want to keep their passport at home while making short trips in the region.
  • Does not suit: anyone flying outside West Africa, applying for a visa elsewhere, or using the trip as part of a longer journey.
  • Does not suit: travellers to a country whose ECOWAS status has changed. The NIS page still refers to sixteen countries, a figure that reflects older membership, so confirm with the destination's embassy that it is a current member and accepts the certificate.

Documents NIS lists

  1. A completed application form.
  2. Three recent colour passport photographs, 4x4 cm.
  3. Proof of age: a birth certificate or a statutory declaration of age.
  4. A letter of introduction from your employer, if you are a salaried worker.
  5. A letter from your Local Government Chairman confirming that you are Nigerian.
  6. For students and trainees, a letter from the institution accepting Immigration Responsibility.
  7. Any other document your locality requires as proof of Nigerian citizenship.

Preparing the documents

The proof of age can be a birth certificate or a statutory declaration of age; if you have neither, a declaration is sworn at a court registry (see swearing an affidavit). Make sure the name on the declaration, the Local Government letter and your NIN all match, and carry photocopies of each. If you are self-employed, there is no employer letter on the list, but bring something that shows what you do in case the office asks under its "any other document" line.

Where to apply and what it costs

The NIS says the certificate is issued at Service Headquarters, the 36 State Commands, the FCT office and immigration offices in local government areas across the country. The page does not set out an online application route or a fee, so ask at the office where you apply what the current charge is and how to pay it, and insist on an official receipt. As at October 2026 we found no NIS-published fee for the certificate.

Renewal, replacement and loss

The NIS page says a replacement application must include the certificate being replaced. It lists these grounds for replacement:

  • The pages are used up while the certificate is still valid.
  • The certificate has reached its total validity period, which the page puts at ten years.
  • It is damaged or needs amendment.
  • It is confirmed lost or stolen, in which case replacement happens only after a waiting period of about two to six months.

That waiting period is a strong reason to keep the certificate safe and to hold a passport as a back-up if you travel often. If your certificate is lost abroad, a Nigerian mission can issue an emergency travel certificate for the journey home; see emergency travel certificates.

At the border

The protocol's rules apply whichever document you carry: up to 90 days without a visa, an international health certificate, and the host state's right to refuse entry to people it classifies as inadmissible. See ECOWAS free movement and the yellow fever card.

Passport or certificate?

If you will ever travel beyond West Africa, a passport is the better use of your time and money; see 32-page or 64-page passport. If your travel is only regional and occasional, the certificate can be a practical second document. Either way, check the cash limit when leaving Nigeria before a road trip.

Questions people ask

How much is ECOWAS travel certificate in Nigeria?

The NIS page does not publish a fee. Ask at the NIS office where you apply and get an official receipt.

Can I use ECOWAS travel certificate to travel to Ghana?

It is valid for travel within ECOWAS member states. Confirm with Ghana's mission that it accepts the certificate before you travel.

How long is ECOWAS travel certificate valid?

The NIS says two years, renewable for another two years. It also refers to a ten-year total validity period for replacement purposes.

Where can I get ECOWAS travel certificate?

At NIS Service Headquarters, the 36 State Commands, the FCT office and immigration offices in local government areas.
