Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Dollar mutual funds in Nigeria for the diaspora: how they work

What Nigerian dollar (Eurobond) funds hold, the fees and holding periods on two real funds, how fast you can get out, and the risks to weigh.

The short answer

Nigerian dollar mutual funds are SEC-regulated unit trusts that pool investors' dollars and mostly buy Eurobonds, the US dollar bonds issued by the Nigerian government and Nigerian companies, plus short-term dollar deposits. Minimums start from about US$100, management fees of around 1.5% a year are common, and many funds charge a penalty if you leave within a minimum holding period, such as 182 days at the Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund. Your money stays in dollars, but it is concentrated in Nigerian credit risk and can fall in value when bond yields rise.

For Nigerians abroad who want a dollar return linked to Nigeria without buying a US$200,000 Eurobond lot, dollar mutual funds are the usual answer. They were the second-largest category of Nigerian mutual fund in April 2026, with ₦1.85 trillion of net assets, 21.05% of the industry total, according to SEC data reported by Nairametrics. Here is what you are buying, using two funds' own documents as examples.

What the funds hold

A dollar fund buys mainly Eurobonds: dollar bonds issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria and by Nigerian banks and companies, traded internationally. The rest usually sits in short-term dollar deposits, and some funds may hold a small share of dollar equities.

ARM Eurobond FundStanbic IBTC Dollar Fund
SourceFactsheet, September 2025Fund page, undated

MinimumUS$1,000 initialUS$100 initial, US$100 additional
Management fee1.5% of net asset value1.5%
Other costsIncentive fee up to 20% of return above benchmarkExpense ratio 3.5%
Minimum holdingNot stated on factsheet182 days; 20% of accrued income penalty if earlier
Getting money outNot stated on factsheetOnline to nominated account within 3 working days (up to US$5,000 a day); by form at a branch within 5 working days
Risk labelMedium-HighAggressive

The ARM factsheet showed 72.30% in bonds, 26.01% short-term and 1.69% cash, a duration of 2.43 and fund size of US$11.48 million at September 2025. Fund figures change monthly, so read the latest factsheet before investing.

How returns work

Your units are priced daily from the market value of the bonds. Return comes from two sources: the interest the bonds pay, and changes in their price. When yields on Nigerian Eurobonds rise, bond prices fall and the unit price drops; when yields fall, it rises. Fees come out of the fund before the return is calculated.

Average year-to-date yield across dollar funds was 4.58% at April 2026 (Nairametrics, from SEC data). That is a historical, part-year average across many funds, not a forecast.

Example: the effect of fees

An example, not a projection. Suppose the bonds in a fund earn 7.00% before costs for a year, and you invest US$5,000:

ItemCalculationAmount
Gross earningsUS$5,000 × 7.00%US$350
Management fee at 1.5%US$5,000 × 1.5%US$75
Net before other costsUS$350 − US$75US$275 (5.50%)

A fund with a higher total expense ratio would leave less. Compare the expense ratio, not only the headline management fee.

Getting in and out from abroad

  • Subscribing: Stanbic IBTC's page says you complete an account form with a photo, ID and proof of address, receive an e-account number by email, and pay by transfer quoting that number; cash is not accepted. It does not state whether naira funding is accepted. Ask each manager what it requires from investors living abroad, since onboarding rules for non-residents are not on the pages we read.
  • App routes: Cowrywise's help centre says its dollar funds start from "$10 equivalent", and its blog says it accepts only naira deposits, converted to dollars at a rate it does not explain on the page. That adds a currency conversion on the way in.
  • Redemption: plan around the minimum holding period. Leaving the Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund within 182 days costs 20% of the income earned so far.

Risks to weigh

  1. Concentration: most of the fund is lent to Nigeria's government and Nigerian companies. If Nigerian credit weakens, the fund falls.
  2. Interest-rate risk: duration measures it. A duration of about 2.4 means a one percentage point rise in yields would cut the bond portion's value by roughly 2.4%, as a rule of thumb.
  3. Liquidity: payouts take days, and holding periods restrict early exits.
  4. Currency, where you live: the fund protects you from naira movements, but if you spend pounds, euros or Canadian dollars, the US dollar can still move against you.
  5. Tax: from 1 January 2026, banks deduct 10% withholding tax on interest on foreign-currency deposits (BusinessDay). How fund income is taxed in Nigeria and in your country of residence varies; check before investing.

Before you invest

  • Read the latest factsheet, not last year's: holdings, duration and fees change.
  • Note the minimum holding period and plan not to need the money before it ends.
  • Ask how redemptions are paid to someone abroad: to a Nigerian dollar account, or abroad.
  • Compare total expense ratios across funds, not only management fees.

For the bonds themselves, see buying Nigerian Eurobonds from abroad. To weigh naira returns against dollar ones, see naira returns versus currency loss. Always check the manager on the SEC register first.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not run or sell mutual funds. A Pryme account holds US dollars with their own account details, so dollars you receive stay in dollars until you choose to Swap, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

What do Nigerian dollar mutual funds invest in?

Mainly Eurobonds issued by the Nigerian government and Nigerian companies, plus short-term dollar deposits and sometimes a small share of dollar equities.

What is the minimum for a dollar fund in Nigeria?

It varies: US$100 at the Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund and US$1,000 at the ARM Eurobond Fund, per their own documents.

Can I withdraw from a dollar fund any time?

Usually yes, but a minimum holding period may apply. Stanbic IBTC charges 20% of accrued income if you leave within 182 days.

Are Nigerian dollar funds safe?

They are SEC-regulated, not guaranteed. Their value depends on Nigerian credit and bond yields.
