Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Disputing a Cifas marker: the steps

A Cifas marker can follow you for six years. How to get your file free, who to challenge first, and when to ask Cifas for an independent review.

The short answer

To dispute a Cifas marker, first get your file through a free data subject access request (DSAR) to Cifas, which answers within one calendar month of a complete application. Then challenge the organisation that filed the marker, usually your bank, and if that fails, ask Cifas for an independent review through its complaints form. Markers are held for up to six years from the date recorded.

Many Nigerians in the UK only learn that a Cifas marker exists when something else goes wrong: a new bank account is refused, a phone contract is declined, or a lender says no without a clear reason. Often the trigger was an account closure after money moved through it that the bank thought was suspicious, sometimes from a friend, a relative at home or a stranger who asked to use the account for a transfer. This guide sets out the dispute process in the order it works, using what Cifas itself publishes.

What a marker is and why it matters

Cifas describes itself as the UK's fraud prevention service and runs the National Fraud Database, which it calls the largest database of fraudulent conduct in the country. Member organisations, such as banks, lenders and phone networks, file records when they believe fraud or misuse has happened, and other members check the database when you apply for something. Cifas says records are retained for six years from the date they are recorded. Which? notes the practical effect: a marker can affect access to credit, mortgages and phone contracts, and accounts can be closed even where the holder was an unwitting money mule.

There are two different kinds of record to tell apart. A misconduct marker says an organisation believes you did something wrong. A victim marker, such as Protective Registration or a record that someone impersonated you, flags your details for extra checks to protect you. Cifas's DSAR page says victim markers for impersonation or account takeover last 13 months. This article is about challenging the first kind.

Step 1: get your Cifas file

You cannot dispute what you have not seen. Cifas offers a free data subject access request online. Its page says it never charges for a DSAR or a complaint, so any website asking for a fee to 'remove' a marker is not Cifas.

  • What you give: your name, date of birth, six years of address history, phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Proof of identity: Cifas may ask for two documents, for example a passport, driving licence, BRP or national ID card, plus a bank statement or utility bill from the last three months, or a council tax or HMRC notice from the last 12 months.
  • How long: one calendar month from a complete application, and Cifas says it aims for 10 working days.

Include every UK address you have used in the last six years, including student halls and a first shared house. A missing address can mean a record is missed. The reply tells you whether a record exists, which organisation filed it, the date and the category.

Step 2: challenge the organisation that filed it

Cifas is clear that the dispute starts with the filing organisation, not with Cifas. Write to that bank or firm's complaints team. Keep the letter factual and short:

  1. Quote the Cifas record details from your DSAR reply.
  2. Say plainly that you dispute the marker and why, for example that you did not know the payment was criminal, that you were the victim of a scam, or that the facts recorded are wrong.
  3. Attach evidence: chats or emails with the person who asked to use your account, payslips or invoices showing where legitimate money came from, police or Action Fraud reference numbers, and any proof you reported the matter yourself.
  4. Ask for their final response in writing and for the marker to be removed or amended.

Explain the Nigerian context where it helps. A bank may not understand that a large naira-to-pound payment came from a family land sale, or that relatives routinely pool money through one person abroad. Documents from the Nigerian side, such as a sale agreement or a statement from the sending bank, can carry weight. Our guide to what a Cifas marker is covers the background.

Step 3: Cifas independent review and the Ombudsman

If the filing organisation refuses or does not answer, Cifas says you can ask it for an independent review through its complaints form. Send the same evidence, the firm's reply and a timeline. Cifas looks at whether the record meets its standards; it does not act as a court.

Separately, where the filing firm is a bank or other financial business, you can usually take a complaint about how it treated you to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The Ombudsman says a business has up to 8 weeks for most complaints, and 15 days for complaints about payment services such as bank transfers. After the final response you have 6 months to refer the complaint. The service is free and you do not need a claims firm. The Ombudsman's guidance to businesses on frozen accounts says it looks at the reasons, the evidence, whether the action was proportionate and how the customer was treated.

RouteWho you contactTiming from the source

DisputeThe filing organisationMost complaints up to 8 weeks; 15 days for payment services (FOS rules)
Independent reviewCifas complaints formNot stated on the Cifas page
OmbudsmanFinancial Ombudsman ServiceWithin 6 months of the firm's final response

What to check first

  • That the marker is a misconduct record and not a protective one.
  • Which organisation filed it, and the date, so you know when six years end.
  • Whether you hold the evidence that explains each payment in question.
  • Whether you need legal advice: if police are involved, speak to a solicitor before writing anything that admits facts.

While a marker stands, opening a fee-free basic account can still be possible in some cases; see getting a bank account again after a mule closure. To protect your file going forward, read the money mule warning and never let anyone else move money through your account.

For the family side of the problem, our guide to remittance scams aimed at the diaspora explains the common approaches.

Questions people ask

How long does a Cifas marker last?

Cifas says records are retained for six years from the date they are recorded. A victim marker for impersonation or account takeover lasts 13 months.

Does Cifas charge to see my file?

No. Cifas says it never charges for a data subject access request or a complaint. Treat any site asking for a removal fee with suspicion.

Can Cifas remove a marker itself?

The dispute starts with the organisation that filed it. If that fails, Cifas offers an independent review through its complaints form.

Can I go to the Financial Ombudsman about a bank's Cifas marker?

Usually you can complain about how a bank or financial firm treated you, once it has sent a final response or the time limit has passed. Refer within 6 months of the final response.
