Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Driving in the UK on a Nigerian licence: the 12-month rule

You can drive in Great Britain on a full Nigerian licence for 12 months from becoming resident. What counts, what ends, and how to plan.

The short answer

If you live in Great Britain, you can drive on a full and valid Nigerian licence for 12 months from the date you became resident. After that, GOV.UK says you must apply for a GB provisional licence and pass the theory and practical tests to keep driving. Visitors can drive small vehicles for 12 months from when they last entered Great Britain.

What the rule says

GOV.UK's tool for drivers on a non-GB licence gives two different answers for a licence from Nigeria, depending on whether you are a resident or a visitor. A resident with a full car licence from 'any other country' can drive on that licence for 12 months from when they became resident. A visitor can drive any small vehicle listed on the licence for 12 months from when they last entered Great Britain.

Your situationHow long you can drive on a Nigerian licenceWhat happens next
Resident (work, family, study long term)12 months from when you became residentGB provisional licence, then theory and practical tests
Visitor12 months from your last entry into Great BritainLicence stops covering you after 12 months
Learner in Nigeria (no full licence)No cover from a Nigerian provisional or learner permitApply for a GB provisional licence

The first two rows come straight from the GOV.UK tool. The third is a simple consequence: the rule only applies to a full and valid licence.

When your 12 months start

For residents, the start date is when you became resident in Great Britain. For most people moving on a work, health and care or family visa, that is the day you arrived to live here. Keep evidence of the date, such as your flight booking, tenancy start or employment start letter, in case an insurer or the police asks. Going back to Nigeria for Christmas does not restart a resident's clock; the 'last entered' wording applies to visitors.

A worked example

Example only: Chidi arrives in Manchester on 3 February 2026 on a Skilled Worker visa and rents a flat. He can drive on his full Nigerian licence until 2 February 2027. If he wants to keep driving after that without a break, he needs to have passed both UK tests before then. He applies for a provisional licence in his first weeks. GOV.UK says you must have lived in Great Britain for at least 185 days in the 12 months before the day of a theory or driving test, so his earliest test date is in early August 2026. That leaves him about six months to pass the theory test, take lessons and pass the practical test, with room for one retake.

What you can and cannot do during the 12 months

  • You can drive cars covered by your full licence, insured in your name or as a named driver.
  • You can apply for a GB provisional licence and take UK tests at the same time.
  • You cannot supervise a UK learner: GOV.UK says an unpaid supervisor must have held a full licence from the UK, the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein for 3 years.
  • You cannot exchange the Nigerian licence for a British one, because Nigeria is not a designated country. See whether a Nigerian licence can be exchanged.

What happens after month 12

Once the 12 months pass, your Nigerian licence no longer allows you to drive in Great Britain. If you have a GB provisional licence, you may drive only as a learner: with L plates, supervised by someone who meets the rules, and never on a motorway unless with an approved instructor in a dual-control car. Driving without the right supervision can bring a fine of up to £1,000 and up to 6 penalty points on your provisional licence, according to GOV.UK.

Insurance is the bigger risk. A policy is priced on the licence you declare, and an insurer may treat cover differently if you drive outside the legal rules. Driving without valid insurance can bring a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points, or an unlimited fine and disqualification if it goes to court, per GOV.UK's vehicle insurance page. More detail is in car insurance with a Nigerian licence.

How to use the 12 months well

  1. Apply for a GB provisional licence early (how to apply). You need permission to live in Great Britain for at least 185 days.
  2. Revise and pass the theory test as soon as you have lived in Great Britain for 185 days in the last 12 months, the earliest GOV.UK allows. The pass certificate lasts 2 years.
  3. Take a few lessons to learn the test standard, even if you have driven for years.
  4. Book the practical test early and leave space for a resit, which must be at least 10 working days away.
  5. Budget for the total: what it costs to pass.

Mistakes that catch people out

  • Counting from the visa date. The rule runs from when you became resident, which may be later than the date on your vignette or eVisa approval.
  • Waiting until month 10 to book. Theory and practical test slots can be weeks away; a failed attempt adds at least 10 working days before a resit.
  • Assuming the insurer knows. Insurers ask what licence you hold and how long you have lived in the UK. Answer accurately and tell them when anything changes.
  • Letting a friend with a Nigerian licence supervise after month 12. They do not meet the supervisor rules, so you would be driving unsupervised in law.
  • Driving a manual on an automatic-only licence. The 12-month permission covers the vehicles listed on your full licence, nothing more.

If you are still deciding whether to drive at all, compare the running costs with public transport first. Insurance for a newly arrived driver, parking and fuel can outweigh the convenience in a city with good transport, while in smaller towns a car may be the only practical option. Whatever you decide, the date you became resident is the one to write in your diary.

What to check first

  • Your residence start date, written down with evidence.
  • That your licence is full, valid and covers the car type (manual or automatic as stated on it).
  • Your insurer's questions about licence type and UK residence.
  • Current DVSA test availability near you.

Questions people ask

Can I drive in the UK with a Nigerian licence after 1 year?

Not as a resident. After 12 months you need a GB provisional licence and must pass both tests; until then you can drive only as a supervised learner.

Does the 12 months restart if I travel to Nigeria and come back?

For residents the period runs from when you became resident. The 'last entered' wording on GOV.UK applies to visitors.

Do I need an international driving permit in the UK?

GOV.UK's answer for licences from other countries does not mention one. Some insurers or hire firms may ask for one, particularly where a licence is not in English; check with them.

Can I use my Nigerian licence to supervise my spouse learning to drive?

No. An unpaid supervisor must have held a full UK, EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein licence for 3 years.
