Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cybercrimes Act (amended 2024): offences that touch your money

Identity theft, impersonation, computer fraud, phishing-style messages and forgery: what the Cybercrimes Act makes criminal and the penalties in its text.

The short answer

Nigeria's Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, amended by an Act signed on 28 February 2024, makes identity theft and impersonation (section 13), computer-related fraud (section 12) and computer-related forgery (section 11) offences. In the 2015 text, identity theft carries at least three years' imprisonment or a fine of at least ₦7,000,000, or both, and sending a misleading electronic message to defraud carries at least five years or ₦10,000,000.

The law and its 2024 amendment

The Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 is Nigeria's main law on crimes committed with computers, phones and networks. An amendment Act was signed by the President on 28 February 2024, after the Senate passed it in December 2023 and the House of Representatives in February 2024, according to Digital Policy Alert.

The amendment is best known for rewriting section 24, the cyberstalking section, which a March 2024 civil society release says now targets knowingly false messages sent to cause a breakdown of law and order or a threat to life, and pornographic messages. The penalties below are taken from the 2015 text; we have not confirmed whether the amendment changed any of them, so check the consolidated Act before relying on a figure.

The offences most likely to touch your money

Section (2015 text)What it coversPenalty in the 2015 text
13(a)Identity theft: using another person's identity information, such as their BVN, card or loginAt least 3 years' imprisonment or at least ₦7,000,000, or both
13(b)Fraudulently impersonating another person or an organisation, such as posing as a bankAt least 3 years or at least ₦7,000,000, or both
12(1)Computer-related fraud: causing someone loss by tampering with data or a system to gain moneyAt least 3 years or at least ₦7,000,000, or both
12(2)Sending a misleading electronic message with intent to defraud, the legal home of many phishing messagesAt least 5 years or at least ₦10,000,000, or both
11Computer-related forgery: altering data so it is treated as genuine, such as a doctored alert or statementAt least 3 years or at least ₦7,000,000, or both
16(1)Cybersquatting: registering a name or domain to mislead, such as a look-alike bank websiteAt least 2 years or at least ₦5,000,000, or both

Section 32 of the 2015 Act deals with compensation and restitution for victims, which matters when a case reaches judgment.

How these map to everyday scams

  • Fake bank SMS or email asking you to "verify" your account: a misleading electronic message with intent to defraud (section 12(2)), and impersonation of the bank (section 13(b)).
  • Someone using your BVN or ID to open a wallet or take a loan: identity theft (section 13(a)).
  • A buyer who shows you an edited credit alert: computer-related forgery (section 11), and possibly obtaining by false pretence under other law; see obtaining by false pretence and is forging a receipt a crime?.
  • A copycat website for a bank or fintech: cybersquatting (section 16(1)) and impersonation.
  • Getting into your app or email without permission: the Act also covers unauthorised access to computer systems; we have not quoted that section here.

Example: one scam, several offences

Example only: a fraudster registers a web address that looks like your bank's, sends you a text saying your account will be blocked unless you log in, captures your details and then uses them to open a loan in your name. That single scheme can touch section 16(1) (the look-alike address), section 12(2) (the misleading message), section 13(b) (posing as the bank) and section 13(a) (using your identity). Prosecutors choose which counts to bring, but it shows why you should report every part, not just the money lost.

What a conviction looks like

Prosecutions happen. The Guardian reported in March 2023 that the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two men to three years in January 2023 in a ₦9.4 million case involving primed ATM cards, under section 33(2)(b) of the Act, following an EFCC prosecution. The same article includes a lawyer's view that the Act also places duties on banks over disputed debits; that is one practitioner's reading, and we have not checked the section text.

If you are a victim

  1. Call your bank's fraud line at once and ask for the account or card to be blocked.
  2. Report to the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre's e-reporting portal, which Techeconomy reported was relaunched in May 2024 at nccc.npf.gov.ng. See how to report cybercrime online.
  3. Keep every message, number, link and alert. Do not delete the scam texts; they are evidence.
  4. Change passwords and PINs, and check accounts linked to your BVN.

If you are accused

Being named in a complaint is not a conviction. Get a lawyer before you make any statement, keep your own records, and do not contact the complainant with threats or offers that could be misread. For threats and harassment specifically, see section 24 explained.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme accounts use an authenticator app rather than SMS codes, and a transaction PIN, which removes one of the routes phishing messages rely on (security).

Questions people ask

What is the punishment for identity theft in Nigeria?

Under section 13 of the Cybercrimes Act 2015, at least three years' imprisonment or a fine of at least ₦7,000,000, or both. Check whether the 2024 amendment changed the figure.

Is phishing a crime in Nigeria?

Yes. Sending a misleading electronic message with intent to defraud is an offence under section 12(2) of the 2015 Act, with at least five years or ₦10,000,000, or both.

When was the Cybercrimes Act amended?

The amendment Act was signed on 28 February 2024. Its best-known change rewrote section 24 on cyberstalking.

Is showing a fake credit alert a crime?

Altering data so it is treated as genuine is computer-related forgery under section 11 of the 2015 Act, with at least three years or ₦7,000,000. Other laws on false pretence may also apply.
