Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cost of living in Umuahia: a monthly budget for one person

A labelled monthly budget for one worker in Umuahia, built on NBS food and fare data for Abia, and how it compares with living in Aba.

The short answer

In our labelled example, one working adult renting a self-contained flat in Umuahia spends about ₦250,000 a month, of which rent is about ₦50,000 and food about ₦75,000. Official data shows the mix behind that: in February 2026 Abia had Nigeria's cheapest average intra-city bus fare (₦699.17) but its dearest intercity fare (₦9,490.95), and in April 2026 Abia had the highest garri price of any state at ₦1,075.47 a kilo.

Umuahia is a civil-service city: quieter than Aba, with less trade but steadier salaries. Day-to-day costs reflect that. Getting around town is cheap by national standards, but food staples are not, and every trip out of the city is expensive. This guide builds a one-person budget from the official figures we could find and fills the rest with clearly labelled examples.

What the official data says

ItemNational averageAbia
Intra-city bus fare (Feb 2026)₦1,195.75₦699.17, the lowest of any state
Intercity bus fare (Feb 2026)₦8,108.81₦9,490.95, the highest of any state
White garri, 1kg (Apr 2026)₦808.96Abia ₦1,075.47, the highest of any state
Palm oil, bottle (1 litre) (Apr 2026)₦2,396.32Abia ₦2,024.41, the lowest of any state
Brown beans, 1kg (Apr 2026)₦1,338.93Not given for Abia
Tomatoes, 1kg (Apr 2026)₦1,177.92Not given for Abia

Sources: NBS Transport Fare Watch for February 2026 and NBS food price data for April 2026, as reported. Headline inflation was 14.63% in September 2026 and food inflation 19.59%, according to the NBS figures released on 15 October 2026, so prices in your market today will differ. Check the latest NBS release before relying on these.

Example monthly budget for one person

Example only. A single worker renting a self-contained flat, cooking most meals, taking keke or bus to work and running a small generator some evenings.

LineExample monthly cost
Rent (₦600,000 a year, spread monthly)₦50,000
Food and cooking gas₦75,000
Transport to work and errands₦35,000
EEDC prepaid token₦15,000
Generator fuel₦20,000
Phone, data and airtime₦10,000
Water₦5,000
Toiletries and household items₦10,000
Church, family support, contributions₦10,000
Savings₦20,000
Total₦250,000

How we built the lines

  • Transport: two trips a day for 22 working days at Abia's February 2026 average of ₦699.17 is about ₦30,760; we round up for weekend errands. Commercial motorcycles were banned in Umuahia's metropolis from 22 June 2026, so most short trips are now by keke or bus.
  • Electricity: on EEDC's published Band A rate of ₦209.50 per kWh plus 7.5% VAT (tariff notice dated July 2024), ₦15,000 buys about 66.6 kWh; on Band B it buys far more. Your band changes this line more than anything else.
  • Food: staples such as garri cost more in Abia than the national average, while palm oil costs less. A one-person food bill of ₦75,000 is an example; it rises quickly with meat and fish.

A tighter example budget

Example only. Not everyone earns enough for the budget above. A young worker sharing a flat and living without a generator might spend closer to ₦155,000:

LineExample monthly cost
Rent share₦25,000
Food₦60,000
Transport₦31,000
EEDC token share₦8,000
Data and airtime₦6,000
Water₦3,000
Household₦7,000
Church and family₦5,000
Savings₦10,000
Total₦155,000

Even this leaner budget is more than twice the ₦70,000 national minimum wage set in July 2024. That gap is why many Umuahia workers combine a salary with a side trade, live with relatives in their first years, or share accommodation. If you are weighing a job offer, set it against a budget like this one before you accept.

Umuahia compared with Aba

Aba is Abia's bigger commercial city, and the comparison comes up constantly. Official data gives one state-wide figure for both, so differences have to be described with care:

  • Electricity: Umuahia buys from EEDC; Aba buys from Aba Power. The two have different tariffs, so the same usage costs differently.
  • Rent: no official rent data exists for either city. Aba's market areas command commercial rents; Umuahia's residential estates are often quieter for the price. Compare actual listings.
  • Food: both are in Abia and share the state's NBS averages; Aba's large markets can be cheaper for bulk buying.
  • Income: Umuahia offers more salaried public jobs; Aba more trading and manufacturing income.

Our Umuahia or Aba comparison and the Aba cost of living guide go further.

What the budget leaves out

The example covers a normal month. It does not include the December trip to the village, a new phone, medical bills beyond a clinic visit, or the yearly rent renewal if you have not saved for it monthly. It also assumes no dependants. If you send money home every month, add that as its own line rather than hoping it fits in the gaps.

Ways to bring the total down

  • Check your EEDC band and whether your feeder is on Band A; a cheaper band changes the power line.
  • Buy staples in bulk at the main markets rather than daily from kiosks.
  • Share a generator or a solar setup with a neighbour in the same compound.
  • Pay rent yearly from savings rather than borrowing for it.

Where Pryme fits

A Fixed or Flexible Savings Box lets you set aside the rent each month, so the yearly payment is ready. Pay electricity, data and TV from the app (bills). Read our family budget for Umuahia if more than one person depends on your income.

Questions people ask

How much do I need to live in Umuahia monthly?

In our example, about ₦250,000 a month for one worker renting a self-contained flat. Your rent, EEDC band and how much you eat out change the figure most.

Is Umuahia cheaper than Aba?

There is no official city-by-city comparison. Both share Abia's NBS averages. Umuahia buys power from EEDC and Aba from Aba Power, and rents differ by area, so compare actual listings.

How much is transport in Umuahia?

The NBS put Abia's average intra-city bus fare at ₦699.17 in February 2026, the lowest of any state. Commercial motorcycles have been banned in the metropolis since June 2026.

Why is garri expensive in Abia?

The NBS recorded Abia with the highest garri price in April 2026 (₦1,075.47 per kg). The release does not explain why; check the latest NBS price watch for the current figure.
