Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cooperative executives ran off with members' money: what to do

Your cooperative's officers have vanished with members' savings. The member meeting, the cooperative department, inquiry rights and the police, in order.

The short answer

Act as a group and act fast: call an emergency members' meeting, secure the society's records and bank accounts, then apply to the state Director of Cooperatives. Under the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act, at least one-third of members can apply for an inquiry, disputes go to the Director, and misapplying society property is an offence, so a police or EFCC petition can run alongside. This is information, not legal advice.

A cooperative runs on trust: members save each month, and a few elected officers hold the passbooks, the bank mandate and the loan register. When those officers stop answering calls and the account balance turns out to be empty, members often freeze, or split into angry factions. Neither helps. A registered cooperative has a regulator and a legal framework, and members who use them together have far more leverage than any single member alone.

First 48 hours: secure what is left

  1. Confirm the facts. Who has gone, which accounts and records are affected, and what balance members believe the society should hold.
  2. Contact the society's bank in writing, signed by remaining committee members or a group of members, to report the situation and ask what steps it can take on the account. Banks act on the account mandate, so be clear about who now has authority.
  3. Gather records: passbooks, contribution cards, receipts, WhatsApp group payment confirmations, minutes and bye-laws. Every member should photograph their own.
  4. Do not pay anyone who offers to recover the money for a fee.

Call an emergency members' meeting

The meeting gives the society a lawful voice. Use it to:

  • Record what happened in minutes, signed by those present.
  • Appoint an interim committee or caretakers, following the bye-laws.
  • Resolve to apply to the Director of Cooperatives for an inquiry and to report to the police or EFCC.
  • Agree who will speak for the society and who keeps the evidence.
  • Start a register of each member's claimed balance, backed by their own records.

The cooperative department and the Act

Registered cooperatives fall under the state's cooperative department; in Lagos, registration is handled through the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives (Mondaq, 2023), and Lagos was reported in July 2026 to have more than 16,000 registered cooperatives and 24 area offices (MSME Africa). Check which law applies in your state; the federal Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act sets out these powers:

Inquiry (s.37(1))
The Director may hold an inquiry into a society, including on the application of a majority of the committee or at least one-third of members.
Audit (s.36)
Societies must be audited annually, and the Director has access to the books.
Disputes (s.49)
Disputes touching the business of a society are referred to the Director, who settles them or refers them to an arbitrator. An appeal lies to the Minister or Commissioner within 30 days.
Misapplication (s.35)
Misapplying the society's property is an offence.
Cancellation (s.38)
The registration can be cancelled after an inquiry, among other grounds, with an appeal within two months.

The inquiry is the strongest member tool. It gives an official the power to examine the books and the officers' conduct. To use it, get the application signed by at least one-third of members, or a majority of the remaining committee, and deliver it to the area or state cooperative office with your evidence. For the complaint process in more detail, see how to complain about a cooperative or thrift society.

Police and EFCC

Taking members' money is a criminal matter as well as a cooperative one. A written petition, signed on behalf of the society with the meeting's minutes, member statements and bank records attached, is stronger than many separate complaints. The EFCC has said its officials do not accept payments under any guise, so ignore anyone claiming they can speed up the case for money. See how to write a fraud petition and reporting fraud to the police and EFCC.

Worked example: what members are owed

Example: a cooperative has 60 members, each with ₦150,000 in recorded savings, so the society should hold ₦9 million. The bank statement shows ₦1.2 million left. The shortfall is ₦7.8 million. One-third of the membership is 20 people; with 34 attending the emergency meeting, the inquiry application has more than enough signatures. The member register and the statement together give the Director and the police a clear figure to work from.

Keeping members together

Cases like this are often lost to division rather than to the law. Members who suspect each other, or who strike private deals with an officer for their own money back, weaken the group's claim. Agree at the first meeting that information goes through the interim committee, that nobody negotiates alone, and that any money recovered is shared according to the member register. Hold short, regular updates, even when there is little news, so members do not drift away or fall for recovery scams.

After the crisis

  • Require two or three signatories for every withdrawal.
  • Share bank statements with all members each month.
  • Insist on the annual audit.
  • Rotate officers on the terms in the bye-laws.

If the 'cooperative' was never registered and promised high returns, it may be an investment scam instead; see fake cooperative investment schemes.

Questions people ask

Our cooperative executives ran away with our money. Who do we report to?

Report to the state Director of Cooperatives, and petition the police or EFCC. Do both as a group, with minutes and records.

Can cooperative members demand an inquiry?

Under section 37(1) of the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act, the Director may hold an inquiry on the application of at least one-third of members. Check your state's law.

Is stealing cooperative money a crime?

The Act makes misapplying society property an offence, and taking members' money can also be reported to the police or EFCC.

How do we prove what each member is owed?

Build a register of each member's balance backed by passbooks, receipts and bank records, and compare it with the society's bank statement.
