Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Fake 'cooperatives' promising monthly returns: the signs

A 'cooperative' offering fixed monthly returns to anyone who joins? How to check state registration, and why a guaranteed high return is the key warning.

The short answer

A real cooperative is a registered society of members, run under state cooperative law, that pools members' savings and lends to members; it does not promise outsiders a fixed high monthly return. Check registration with the state ministry in charge of cooperatives, ask for the certificate, bye-laws and audited accounts, and treat any guaranteed monthly return as a strong sign of a Ponzi scheme.

Why fraudsters use the word 'cooperative'

Cooperatives are trusted in Nigeria. Civil servants, market associations, churches and staff unions have run thrift and credit societies for generations, and many people have bought land or paid school fees through one. Lagos alone has more than 16,000 registered cooperatives across 24 area offices, according to a July 2026 MSME Africa report on the state's cooperative loan scheme. That familiarity is what makes the label useful to scammers: an investment scheme called a 'cooperative' sounds communal, local and safe.

The fake version usually has a slick social media page, a WhatsApp group, a 'chairman' or 'coordinator', and a plan: put in ₦100,000 or more and receive a fixed percentage every month, sometimes with bonuses for bringing in new members.

How a real cooperative is set up

Cooperatives are registered by state governments under cooperative law, not by the CAC like companies. In Lagos, a May 2023 guide by Pavestones Legal on Mondaq explains that an application goes to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives; the society needs at least 20 members aged 18 or over, a letter of intent, objectives and bye-laws; a ministry representative attends the inaugural meeting; officers are inducted at the Lagos State Cooperative College; and a certificate follows a period of monitoring. The same guide notes that lending to non-members or dealing in foreign exchange needs a CBN licence.

The federal Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act also sets out duties that give members protection: an annual audit with the Director of Cooperatives having access (section 36), an inquiry into a society's affairs on application by its committee or at least a third of members (section 37), and referral of disputes to the Director for settlement (section 49). Other states have their own laws and ministries; the principle is similar.

What to ask for

  1. The registration certificate, with the state ministry's name and the society's registration number.
  2. Confirmation from the ministry or the local cooperative office that the number is real and the society is active.
  3. The bye-laws, which say who can be a member and how money is lent and repaid.
  4. The latest audited accounts and the auditor's name.
  5. The names of the committee members and when they were elected.

Why a guaranteed monthly return is a flag

Real cooperatives earn mainly from interest on loans to members. Their surplus depends on how many members repay and on running costs, and it is shared at the end of the year after the audit. It cannot be fixed in advance for outsiders.

A scheme that guarantees, say, 10% a month is promising a return that very few legitimate businesses earn. The usual way to pay it is with new members' money, which is the definition of a Ponzi scheme.

Worked example

Example only: a scheme promises 10% a month. On ₦500,000 that is ₦50,000 a month, or ₦600,000 a year in simple terms, more than doubling your money. If returns are 'rolled over', 1.10 multiplied by itself 12 times is about 3.14, so ₦500,000 would grow to about ₦1,569,000 in a year. To pay that to everyone, the scheme must keep finding new money faster than it pays out. When recruitment slows, it collapses. Our guide to Ponzi maths works through why.

Other signs of a fake cooperative

  • Membership open to anyone online, with no common bond such as workplace, trade or community.
  • Contributions paid into a personal account rather than the society's account.
  • Rewards for recruiting new members.
  • No general meeting, no elected committee, no audited accounts.
  • Claims that the scheme is 'approved by CBN' or 'registered with CAC' as a cooperative, with nothing you can check.
  • Withdrawals delayed with new conditions, or a sudden 'system upgrade'.

A further clue is how the scheme reacts to questions. A real society expects members to ask about accounts and meetings, because members own it. A fake one treats questions as disloyalty, removes doubters from the group and points to testimonials instead of documents.

If you have already joined

Ask in writing for your contributions back and keep every record. If the society is registered, you can complain to the state ministry or cooperative office; see how to complain about a cooperative or thrift society. If it is an investment scheme in disguise, check whether the operator is registered with the SEC; see checking an investment firm is SEC-registered and Ponzi and investment scams.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Naira Savings Boxes show their rates in the app before you commit. The Investment Box funds Solid Allianze MFB's lending, so its return depends on that lending and it is held to maturity; that risk is stated rather than hidden behind a fixed promise.

Questions people ask

How do I know a cooperative is registered?

Ask for its registration certificate and number, then confirm with the state ministry in charge of cooperatives or the local cooperative office.

Do cooperatives register with CAC?

Cooperatives are registered by state cooperative authorities under cooperative law, not as CAC companies. A 'cooperative' showing only a CAC business name is not a registered society.

Is 10% monthly return possible?

It is far above what legitimate businesses normally earn. A guaranteed monthly return like that is a common sign of a Ponzi scheme.

Can a cooperative take money from non-members?

A Lagos legal guide notes that lending to non-members or dealing in foreign exchange needs a CBN licence. Check the society's bye-laws.
