Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Converting a Nigerian driving licence in Texas

Nigeria has no licence reciprocity with Texas, so DPS tests apply. The 90-day window, what to prepare and how to plan your DPS appointment.

The short answer

You cannot simply swap a Nigerian licence for a Texas one. Texas DPS waives the knowledge and driving tests only for adults from its listed reciprocity countries (France, Germany, South Korea, the UAE and Taiwan), so Nigerian licence holders should expect to take the tests. DPS lets new residents drive on a valid licence from a qualifying country for up to 90 days after moving; confirm with DPS that a Nigerian licence qualifies.

Why there is no straight exchange

Texas lets some foreign licences be exchanged without testing under reciprocity arrangements. The Department of Public Safety's guide for people moving to Texas names the countries: France, Germany, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan. For adults holding a valid, unexpired licence from one of those countries, the knowledge and skills exams may be waived. Nigeria is not on the list, so a Nigerian licence does not earn that waiver. In practice you apply much like a first-time Texas applicant, with the advantage that you already know how to drive.

The 90-day window

DPS says new residents may drive on a valid, unexpired licence from another US state, US territory, Canada or a qualifying country for up to 90 days after moving to Texas. The guide does not define which countries qualify for this window, so ask DPS to confirm that your Nigerian licence counts. Either way, treat 90 days as the outer limit and book early: appointment availability varies by office, and if you fail the driving test you will want time to retake it. Our general guide, driving in the US on a Nigerian licence, explains how other states differ.

Before you book

  1. Register your car. DPS requires all your vehicles to be registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles before you apply for a Texas licence.
  2. Check your Nigerian licence. It should be valid and unexpired, and it is in English, so DPS's translation rule for licences not in English or Spanish does not apply.
  3. Gather identity, immigration and residency documents. DPS publishes a checklist of what to bring; read the current version on the DPS site before your appointment, because document rules are detailed and change.
  4. Check whether a course applies to you. DPS mentions the Impact Texas Drivers course and adult driver education in its rules; ask whether either applies to your age and situation.
  5. Plan the driving test car. You normally bring an insured, registered vehicle in working order; confirm what the office expects.

What the tests involve

StepWhat it checksTip for Nigerian drivers
Vision checkEyesight to the legal standardBring glasses if you drive with them
Knowledge testTexas traffic laws and road signsStudy the Texas driver handbook; US signs and rules differ from FRSC's
Driving testControl, observation, obeying signs and signalsPractise full stops at stop signs, right turns on red where allowed, and school zones

Experienced Lagos or Abuja drivers often fail on habits rather than skill: rolling through stop signs, not checking mirrors visibly, or not yielding as US rules expect. A lesson or two with a local instructor before the test is cheap insurance against a retake.

Worked example: planning backwards

Example only. Bisi moves to Houston and starts counting on 10 January. Her 90 days end on about 10 April. She registers her car with the Texas DMV in the first week, books the earliest DPS appointment she can find for February, studies the handbook for the knowledge test and takes one practice lesson. If she fails the driving test in February, she still has time to retake it in March, well inside the 90 days. She also tells her insurer she holds a Nigerian licence and asks in writing whether she is covered until she passes.

After you pass

Keep your Nigerian licence safe even after you get a Texas one; you will need it when driving at home, and renewal from abroad is covered in renewing a Nigerian licence from the US. Update your insurer, as a Texas licence can change your premium. Your SSN is not a precondition for every licence application; the SSA says an SSN is not needed to get a driver's licence, but follow DPS's document list.

What to check first

  • The date you became a Texas resident, so you know when your 90 days end.
  • Your car is registered with the Texas DMV.
  • You have read the current DPS list of documents to bring.
  • Your insurer knows what licence you hold.

Settling in Houston? See renting in Houston as a newcomer.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving it until the last weeks. If an appointment slips or you fail the driving test, you can run past the 90 days.
  • Applying before registering your car. DPS wants vehicles registered with the Texas DMV first.
  • Bringing photocopies. Bring original documents; licensing offices, like the SSA, are wary of copies.
  • Assuming your Nigerian experience covers insurance. Insurers price new Texas licence holders on their own terms; ask for a quote before you buy a car.
  • Driving to the test unlicensed. If your 90 days have passed, have a licensed driver bring you and the car.

Note too that DPS treats under-18 applicants differently: those from outside the US and Canada must pass the knowledge exam and the skills exam, and learner licence holders face a minimum holding period. Families moving with teenagers should read the DPS guide's section for minors.

Questions people ask

Can I exchange my Nigerian licence for a Texas licence?

Not without testing. Nigeria is not on the Texas DPS reciprocity list, so the knowledge and driving test waiver does not apply.

How long can I drive in Texas on my Nigerian licence?

DPS allows new residents up to 90 days after moving on a valid licence from a qualifying country.

Which countries have licence reciprocity with Texas?

DPS lists France, Germany, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan.

Do I need to register my car before getting a Texas licence?

Yes. DPS requires vehicles to be registered with the Texas DMV before you apply.
