Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Converting naira savings to AUD while living in Australia

Naira rarely converts straight to Australian dollars. The route, the paperwork and the rate you get depend on where your naira came from.

The short answer

There is usually no direct naira-to-AUD conversion: the CBN publishes an official naira rate against the US dollar, not the Australian dollar, so most routes go naira to USD in Nigeria, then USD to AUD in Australia. Whether a Nigerian bank will sell you dollars for your savings depends on the purpose and on whether the naira came from money you brought in from abroad. Expect to show where the money came from at both ends.

Why naira to AUD is a two-step job

The Central Bank of Nigeria's exchange rate page shows one official rate, the NFEM rate, quoted as naira per US dollar. The CBN describes it as a volume-weighted average that stands as the official rate for the day. Its monthly average tables add sterling, the euro and the CFA franc, but the Australian dollar is not one of the currencies it lists. In practice the naira is priced against the dollar first, and anyone quoting you a naira-to-AUD figure is combining two rates and adding a margin to each.

That matters for cost. Each conversion is a chance for a spread to be taken, so a route that converts once (naira to USD, then sending USD that your Australian bank converts) can cost more or less than a provider that quotes a single cross rate. The only way to know is to compare the number of Australian dollars you would actually receive.

The routes, and which ones apply to you

RouteWhen it fitsWhat to expect
Bank in Nigeria sells you USD, then a transfer from your domiciliary accountYour naira came from foreign money you converted earlier, or you have an eligible purposeThe bank asks for purpose and source; dom transfers out are covered by the 2026 FX Manual
Non-Resident Nigerian Investment Account (NRNIA)Naira that came from foreign inflows you invested through approved channelsNaira balances repatriable on evidence of the earlier inflows and investment proceeds
Personal or business travel allowance (PTA/BTA)You are in Nigeria with a real trip abroadPTA up to $4,000 a quarter; not a way to move savings
Keep it in nairaYou will spend it in Nigeria: family, property, school fees, tripsNo conversion cost until you need it

The CBN's framework for Non-Resident Nigerian accounts, as summarised by Lexworth, says foreign-currency balances can be repatriated without restriction, but naira balances in an investment account are repatriable only on evidence of the earlier foreign inflow and the investment proceeds. In plain terms: money you brought in can usually go back out; naira you earned or saved locally is harder to turn into foreign currency for export, because there is no general allowance for that.

The CBN's BDC FAQs set the personal travel allowance at $4,000 a quarter (or business travel allowance at $5,000), for people travelling. It is not built for someone already living in Sydney who wants to empty a savings account.

What about remittance apps?

Some apps let you pay in naira and receive foreign currency, but check that the feature exists for Australian customers. LemFi's help centre, for example, says its "add money from Nigeria" option works only for accounts opened in the UK, US or Canada, not for sign-ups in Australia. Read the provider's own help page for your country before you start.

Documents both sides will ask for

  • In Nigeria: your BVN and NIN linked to the account. A CBN circular reported by BusinessDay requires both for Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts.
  • Purpose and source: statements showing how the naira got there (salary, a sale, an earlier inward transfer).
  • For an NRNIA: evidence of the original foreign inflow and the investment it funded.
  • In Australia: be ready to explain a large incoming transfer. Australian banks run their own source-of-funds checks; ask yours what it wants before the money is sent, so it is not held on arrival.

How the rate is shown, and how to check it

Ask for the quote as a full amount: how many Australian dollars arrive for a given number of naira, after every fee. Then check the pieces against reference rates: the CBN's NFEM rate for naira per dollar, and a published US dollar to Australian dollar rate from your Australian bank or a reference source. The gap between the reference cross rate and your quote is the real price.

Worked example (illustrative rates only): you convert ₦5,000,000 at an example rate of ₦1,400 per US dollar, which gives $3,571.43. Your Australian bank converts that at an example rate of A$1.50 per US dollar, giving A$5,357.14 before fees. If the Nigerian bank charges a $25 transfer fee and the Australian bank deducts A$15 on receipt, you receive (3,571.43 - 25) x 1.50 - 15 = A$5,304.65. Change any one rate by a percent and the result moves by roughly A$53.

The Australian tax side

The ATO says Australian tax residents must declare income earned in Australia and overseas, including interest from bank deposits. Converting savings is not income in itself, but interest your naira earned while you were resident may be, and the ATO requires foreign amounts to be converted to Australian dollars, using rates at specific times or an average rate. Temporary residents should read the ATO's page on the foreign income exemption. This is information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account, opened from Australia, holds naira, US dollars, pounds and euros in one place. If you hold naira with Pryme and decide to move some into dollars, Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and the money stays in naira until you choose. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See the multicurrency account and our guide to holding AUD and naira.

Questions people ask

Can I convert naira directly to Australian dollars?

Rarely. The CBN's official rate is quoted against the US dollar, so most routes go naira to USD, then USD to AUD. Some providers quote one cross rate, but it still combines two.

Can I move my naira savings to Australia without restrictions?

Not always. Foreign currency you hold can generally be sent out, but naira saved locally has no general export allowance. Naira in a Non-Resident Nigerian Investment Account can be repatriated with evidence of the earlier foreign inflow.

Will my Australian bank ask where the money came from?

Expect it to for a large transfer. Have statements showing the source of the naira and the conversion ready before you send.

Do I pay Australian tax when I convert naira savings?

Converting is not income in itself, but interest the savings earned while you were an Australian tax resident may need to be declared. Check the ATO's foreign income pages; temporary residents have different rules.
